  • ‘On the Land’ visits the apiary of Jess Cobb in Bridgetown, County Wexford.
    Mr Cobb has been keeping bees for years and winning prizes for his honey. This film shows Jess at work harvesting honey from his hives. Smoke is used to protect him from being stung while at work. The honey is extracted from the hive frames through spinning.
    This episode of ‘On the Land’ was broadcast on 13 August 1962.
    ‘On the Land’ was a weekly programme for farmers broadcast from 1962 to 1971. Jack White, Head of Public Affairs, Telifís Éireann, wrote
    Good cover of farming is a basic duty for a television network that serves an agricultural country. Telifís Éireann is anxious to do its bit to make for a better life on the land.

    My grandad had bees in Co. Wexford when I was growing up. A young lad came on a bicycle to bring a swarm home to his house. He held it on a branch in one hand and cycled home with the other hand. I still love a honey section to this day. 🐝🐝🐝

    The old guy we had on my family farm was that way . I wish I wasn't thanking of 4×4 trucks and girls back then . I would be a better beekeepers .

      @⚜️ Trinity Une ⚜️ the sound is blatantly dubbed over, i'm wondering what cultural difference 60 years has had on our perception and standards of such things, and whether people noticed the dub at all, and if they did, whether it crossed their mind as poorly done or whether they weren't bothered that it was.

      @@aduantas i think the modern editing standards are much higher though, it's done in a way that is unnoticable to us, that's what raised the question in the first place, did THEY notice or do they just not care? maybe i'm not explaining well enough but i have no idea how else to phrase it.
