The Fortunate Fall's one of my favorite cyberpunk books, and I'm so glad it's getting a rerelease and others are getting a chance to experience it. It's also one of the few books I already own that I just bought again, just so I can have the new edition and support the author (who apparently has begun writing again after a long absence and the snippets they've posted already got me interested in whatever they do next).

The Coldfire trilogy is definitely under-rated. It is a fantastic trilogy. A prequel to the trilogy was recently released but I have yet to read it.

I'm quite taken with the beginning of Wil McCarthy's The Collapsium, which starts with a man walking on his own miniature planet, but it's all backed by science.

I fundamentally agree with Kim Stanley Robinson. There are so many amazing ideas there but sometimes he can be really, really ponderous, and there always seems to be a sequence where a character is taking a long journey, walking across an alien landscape, and his characters always love bloody Beethoven. There is always a boring bit you have to slog through to get to the good stuff. Having said that, when he's good, he's really good. Ministry for the Future blew my mind

    • @TheShadesofOrange
      @TheShadesofOrange  Месяц назад

Yeah I've had amazing experiences with Robinson so I keep going back, even when the story doesn't quite work

While turning my book hoarding mess into a proper shelved collection I found Black Sun Rising and one sequel in a box, where I had another sequel on a shelf. I only read the first book in the 90's and want to give it a go again as I only recall the beginning and end. FYI: The dude on the cover is not the protagonist.
I see over your shoulder Perdido Street Station which I read this year and loved it. If you are aware of the Merphy Napier "undulate" thing, I found 14 in that book.

I would highly recommend “In Ascension” by Martin MacInnes. It’s a first contact story that’s beautifully written and reminds me a lot of Carl Sagan’s Contact or the movie Arrival.

Have you seen "Alien: Romulus" yet? It's fantastic and draws upon the entire franchise except the Alien vs Predator films. The last 40 minutes are breathless white-knucklers and do something no Alien movie has done before! Cailee Spaeny is magnificent and the new android, Andy, played by David Jonsson is incredible! New lore about the xenomorph's physiology and Weyland-Yutani is added! A surprise legacy character returns! It's great sci-fi, horror and action as well as the shot in the arm the franchise needed! Fede Alvarez did it again! I can't stop thinking about it and highly recommend it to sci-fi enthusiasts and devotees of the series!

@@TheShadesofOrange Hey, Rachel! The ASSEMBLY CUT of "Alien 3" is the best version of the film and is closest to director David Fincher's original vision before studio interference. The ASSEMBLY CUT (aka SPECIAL EDITION) enhances the film in much the same way the Special Edition version of "Aliens" did for that movie which is the preferred cut of both Sigourney Weaver and director James Cameron. "Alien 3" is divisive but ESSENTIAL viewing in my opinion providing the single image that became emblematic of the entire series! "Alien: Romulus" draws the most overt plot elements from "Alien" and "Prometheus" but there are callbacks to everything in the franchise except the AvP stuff including:
      2093 Prometheus
      2104 Alien: Covenant
      2122 Alien
      2137 Alien: Isolation
      2179 Aliens: Special Edition
      2179 Alien 3: Assembly Cut
      2379 Alien Resurrection: Director's Cut
"Romulus" is set in 2142 between "Alien" and "Aliens".
"Alien: Isolation" is a terrifying video game about Ripley's daughter, Amanda, aboard a decommissioned space station. The installation's visual aesthetic and ticking clock in the game heavily influenced the installation in the current movie but the plot of the game has no bearing on the film so you needn't be concerned if you're unfamiliar with it.
