    An old review but a goodie, Wombat.. as usual 👍 A Cub 12R has been on my hitlist for a long time after many trials of various solid state amps. Finally sprung for one a week ago after playing my P90 LP through my mate's Cub. Five minutes of playing was enough.. no pedals, just the guitar and the amp and so impressed with the tone of this little beastie.
    Hard to beat that awesome valve tone. My favourite amp now.. for sure. 👌

    I've had one o these for a couple years and anyone who wants that tube rock sound definitely recommend as well. can get some awesome authentic sounding tones out of this. my reasoning was that with the full 12" spkr you're going to get the full frequency range. for years I used solid state amps with overdrive effects and I liked the ability to have different volume sounds set up for live situations. but I seriously wondered why I didnt' go full tube a LOT sooner. the tone is SO much better through a real valve amp. I guess I never had much money to spend on an amp for a couple grand but these are so cheap but really great sounding and had no issues with it

      I got a bonus a few years ago - got one for £300. Lovely. RUclips doesn't so these things justice. I like that I can add pedals in FX loop too. Pinch harmonics with high gain and bridge pickup really chime out.

    Damn fine amp, and a great pedal platform. Who needs 2 channels?
    This thing will give you those old Floyd/Gilmour tones - I mean, srsly authentic. And yep, he is right, it does your AC/DC, Led Zep The Who etc etc etc.
    It's a freakin great little amp.

    Hello, how do you compare it with the blues junior (back face) ?
    Is it even comparable?
    Thanks

    • @WombatPage
      @WombatPage  6 лет назад +3

      They are quite different. Both aimed at a similar market and both run EL84 tubes but that's about it for similarity. The Fender is a great pedal platform and you will need to have pedals to get the most out of it at reasonable volume levels as it doesn't have any attenuation control, but you do easily get that classic Fender blues tone that makes the junior a big seller. The Cub has a gain control which allows you to get the overdriven tone without a pedal at reasonable volume. This makes it more plug and play for home use.

    Hi! Wold you recommend this Laney Cub12 or a Vox AV60? Thanks!

    • @WombatPage
      @WombatPage  4 года назад +2

      Very difficult to answer for a couple of reasons. The first is because I have never played the Vox. Secondly is that these are two amps that are built very differently and for different purposes. The Vox is a 60watt tube hybrid amp with 2 channels and a host of onboard effects. If you want a plugin tube style amp that is like your solid-state amp then this may be for you. The Laney is a 15watt all-tube amp that is vintage-inspired with one channel and the only effect you get is reverb. This amp needs you to sit and fiddle with the controls and/or know what you are doing with an amp to get the most out of. If you just want something like your current solid-state amp then this is not for you. If you don't know how to use your controls on your guitar then this amp is not for you. These amps really don't compare to each other as they have different purposes in mind and are for completely different types of players.

    Here are my two cents:
    I have tried A LOT speakers in this amp, modern and originals.
    For clean jazz tone the legend L 1218 is the best I have tried so far in it.
    A 16 ohmed G12T75 modern takes out the low mids so makes it sound very sparkly and fendery- good if you want to.
    A vintage V30 that had a dense steely tone- good for slide guitar.
    Greenbacks sound very woody, but are not my top choice.
    G1265- similar to the stock HH 1265 in many ways, very nice.
    The best was an EVM12L, original, in a thiele cab.
    And the best overall was an Eminence 16 ohm Lady Luck- unbelievable speaker.
    So good it make me email Eminence to ask for similar contemporary speakers of them (lady lauck is an OEM Emily speaker) and they informed me that their currently produced equivalents are the CV 75/ 65, Reignmaker, Governor and Legend L1275recommended- and they are correct, you may go with any of these!!!
    From Celestions for this amp I recommend:
    Alnico blue, gold, cream, ruby.
    G12H anniversary- not the Heritage.
    Any Creamback, especially the H75.
    V type first, A type second.
    G1265/ T75.
    70-80/ G12P80.
    From Eminence those I mentioned first plus the GA SC64 plus many others.
    From Jensen C12N, K2, P12.
    This amp packs a lot of punchiness, boominess and low mids due to circuit design and small enclosure so you may need to compensate for that with the speaker choices.
    It is a GREAT amp, totally recommended.

    Is there any tone difference between 15W and 1W? Or is it just a loudness thing?

    • @WombatPage
      @WombatPage  5 лет назад +2

      An amp in 15watt mode roaring along will always sound better than 1watt mode. There was no noticeable difference in tone that I could pick up in the short time I had my hands on this amp. It sounded great in both modes and managed to continue to sound like it's self, which some amps with this feature fail at. In fact the sound clips in this video are both in 1watt mode.

      Well they are both small tube amps made in England, but that is about it as far as similarities go. The Vox AC amps are a totally different tonal beast. They have thier own tonal characteristic that nobody else really does. On top of that the Laney is 15watts compared to the Vox AC10's 10watts. My advice is to take your guitar (always use your own guitar) and try both amps and see which one you prefer the sound of.

      In my opinion no. It can be a handy thing to have if you don't want to run delay or reverb pedals or effects like that through the front of your amp. It's also handy for running a volume pedal in the effects loop to control volume while running the tubes hot. But deal breaker? No. I, personally, have rarely if ever used an effects loop.
