"OKAFFE" opened in 2016. The main character is master and barista AKIHIRO OKADA. His family owned a kimono business, and he himself worked at a kimono store for 10 years. Aiming to become a barista, he also trained in Italy. He won 3rd place in the Latte Art World Competition and won the Barista Japan Champion. OKADA, which has a spectacular career, opened its own business not as a cafe that was ahead of the times, but as a coffee shop for the common people.
OKADA hopes to be a place where masters and customers can connect, and strangers can connect with each other through a cup of coffee. In his ideal café space, an old-fashioned counter where the master and customers face each other was indispensable.
On the other hand, OKADA is one step ahead of traditional coffee shops. He pays attention to each and every gesture of brewing coffee, and emphasizes attractiveness. In 2019, he opened a roastery in Arashiyama and pursued the taste and aroma with the latest roaster. We will approach the work and thoughts of OKADA, which runs an old and new Kyoto coffee shop. The program also touches on the history of coffee in Kyoto, introducing the oldest existing coffee shop and a coffee shop that served as a base for student movements in the 1960s and 1970s.
