This is what i needed for my goals. Been playing presets most of my life, which is not a bad thing. But what triggered my knee to get into sound designed and to be able to create my own sounds was an event that happened in my life. We have all had them. A good well established World, travel, musician friend of mine invited me to a writing session at Lauryn Hill‘s house in New Jersey. When I got there, they were four corners of keyboard set up with a drum set in the middle of the floor. Bottom line they were all synthesizer. It wasn’t your typical Bread and butter, meat and potatoes, keyboard, piano roads, Oregon, etc. And out of all four musicians in these corners, only my good friend was able to quickly design fat sounds. The rest of us were pulling up basic presets. Yet you can tell who the man was in the room when it came to knowledge diligence, and just flat out doing your homework. I made a commitmentthat day that I’m going to spend the next, however, long learning how to initialize and quickly be able to this side. This is just another fond video that has been another really good walk-through on how this thing goes. Thank you.
I bought a refurbished Peak from Novation and the thing looks like it's never been used - I was pleasantly surprised with the deal and the sound is amazing too
Just want to say, I discovered your channel via this video which has helped me enormously get started with my first anologue synth (Subsequent 37) - it's a fantastic video, thank you hugely taking the time to produce it. Just wanted to give some positive feedback given the sh*t that you've had to put up with since the weekend.
Please make more videos like this going more in depth each time. I’ve needed this for a long time. I have a book but it uses software synth which I know are basically the same as far as function and only barely scratches the surface but take much much longer ( bc reading puts me to sleep) to get what I need.
Using one's ""embouchure"", I used to ose that as a pick-up line type of saying/encounter type remark..... lmao, it was a HiT/Miss thing to say but I was ready to do it should it go that direction. Enough of that, thanks for the lesson here Professor. I'm always learning stuff. peace & Merry New Year
@@galibert42 Actually it can. AWM starts with samples but everything else follows the same paths (envelopes, filters etc per element). You can even get plain elements, like sinewaves, saws etc. It does not have the immediacy of a synth full of knobs but all the basic components are there.
Sure it can. It has basic waveform sounds in it, in fact I've already made a video showing just how it's done: ruclips.net/video/_cC03YYtoC8/видео.html
@@ScottsSynthStuff True that. That older video is a very nice complement too. I guess, at last if you don't need sync osc/fm mod/ring mod, you can use that to get even more polyphony even on the montage m.
Merry Christmas Scott. Your video is really a nice intro. Maybe you could do a followup with a specific example of sound (e.g. a Pad or a pluck sound) on a specific, preferably low cost synth. GAIA2 or mini/microfreak for example.
First ever synth top tip = learn how to save sounds before you learn anything else! We’ve all done it, new synth arrives and we instantly get inspired and make a great new sound. And then we lose that sound by mistakenly pressing the wrong button or whatever 😔
Same here. It's a doozy, isn't it? I try to tackle another feature every couple of months. The motion sequencer is what I'm learning now. It's really a big deal.

Great video Scott! Great for beginners or for someone who needs to brush up on the basics. This is my favorite synth channel on RUclips.
Thanks so much for the kind words!
I've been contemplating about getting a synthewave, so this video was helpful.
Didn't "gift" myself a synthesizer this year but I did pre-order the Behringer Lm Drum Machine!!! And that to me is worth waiting for!! :)
Thank you very much for doing this demo using the Novation Summit :) Happy Holidays!
Merry Christmas! Great video.
Awesome explanations!

we need a synth 102 now ;)
Great tutorial! Thank you and a happy new (musical) year to you 🙂

Finally someone explains the basics! thank you happy 2025,
MODX8 my first and only synth, so thank you for the great info. I will now have some idea of what to do besides playing the sounds that came with it.
Sadly the modx8 cannot do the kind of substractive synthesis Scott is demonstrating. You need the AN-X engine. In the future modxm maybe 🙂

This is a really great video!!!!
Brought myself a montage m8x for my first synthesizer 🙂 Love it too

You clearly got my message, thanks 😅😅
Really good video.
Most synths work the same…until the FM synths bust into the clubhouse and start flipping tables.
Still love that 106 chorus. It’s amazing how the sh -101 sound so wicked with one Oscillator. Roland was a

Awsome!!
Great video, understood most of it, just a question of getting more hands-on familiarity.
- Cool.
Montage 7m. My first synth. It's so overwhelming😢
Hang in there. It's an amazing machine. Learning curve is deep.

Take your time learning it. The good news is that, once learned, the Montage will fill your synth needs for years to come.
