How is the Internet to blame? The decay has been going on for decades. In my opinion it started when the big supermarkets started opening in the industrial areas - Tesco, Sainsbury's etc. It meant you no longer needed to go into the town centre to do any shopping, including for fresh fruit and veg because the supermarkets had it all. Then of course other shops started opening around these, and now all the shopping centres are basically out of town. The other thing that happened was Harlow started turning into a commuter haven - people moving there because it was cheaper but still connected to London by a half-hour rail trip. So the residental construction just exploded - everything got turned into housing and Harlow lost its sports centre, ski slope, swimming pool, half of the College, the Square. And there is little to nothing left there for people to do who actually live there. By the way, I got out, and won't be coming back. It was nothing special before, but now it's not a place I would want to live.
