Bakir might be intended to be a Hun (if Brencis is in fact Roman in origin it might be especially appropriate if Bakir is a Hun). But in the middle ages, invasions by different groups of horse nomads from the east happened for centuries so it could be any of them. I will be very interested to know how it came to pass Coen's family ended up in Brencis' dungeon (and whether Lunka is still entirely human).

A very solid breakdown, and a good catch on some of these details. I can’t believe I missed the gladius! I wonder if Brencis is/was actually Roman, or just part of the Empire?
Was quite impressed with the trailer. Liked the flavors of vampire, different but not too different from each to make them feel too apart. Liked the brutality of the action. Liked the actions of the lead vampire. Clearly has some sort of morals, not wholly benevolent, and a little alien. Overall felt good.
I think the action will take place in an unspecified part of Carpathia (Carpathian Mountains), which blends well into many sources of inspiration and links to foreign cultures such as remnants of the Golden Horde, Greek/Macedonian as well as remnants of the Roman culture and how the Roman link can also be tied to Christian/Orthodox religious symbolism.
It reminds me of this netflix series called "Kingdom" which they shape their own way to portrait zombie/somone who is infected by a mysterious flower! Very nice datils on this vid an yes its very exciting to see a different game specifically from someone who worked on w3 👏🏻
Keep in mind that Eastern Europe EAST of Carpathian mountain range was likely hit by the plague directly from overland contact with the Horde and its local subjects from Pontic-Caspian steppe, one of the earliest recorded events is Jani Beg using infected bodies in his siege of modern day Feodosia in Crimea in year 1345, exactly 2 years prior to Genoese ship fleet arriving filled with dead men and initiating outbreak in Italy. We just don't have enough elaborate data on Eastern European principalities and kingdoms on account of afflictions and such events as these lands were endlessly disputed mess at the time. The northern, foresty part of the region was infected later in 1350s via economic connections with Germany over Baltic sea, that we know for sure, but Horde's post system was very progressive even by today's standards, so plague getting spread by messengers or refugees from Crimea (infected years earlier) and steppes early to some backwater valley in disputed region that is pain to control because of mountain range is totally plausible and devs could be using that historic obscurity for their setting, too.
@@spellandshield Thank you! I went to dig in a little futher into bubonic plague mentions in modern day Ukraine and Russia in 14 century from our historians for an hour. Here's what I found: Western scholars were rather ignorant to plights of Slavs and especially Asians, while the latter had plague outbreaks like this for millenia prior to arrival of Black Death in Europe. Wouldn't you know, even to this day with enlightenment and islamisation with strict codes of meat consumption aimed exactly to limit exposure to known unclean animals some people deep in the steppe or farther east just can't help themselves and stop eating random wild animals for spiritual purposes, thus getting new bubonic plague cases once in a while, huh. I didn't find any mention of Christian city or principality getting torched by plague until outbreaks in 1352 in Velikiy Novgorod and Pskov (as opposed to 18th century outbreak that ravaged across the land with a lot of data left to analyze), which arrived, again, via Baltic maritime trade routes from Western and Northern Europe. At the same time, it was known to Russian scribes and monks (according to Karamzin's history of Russian state, for example) that people living around Caspian Sea and in the steppe and to the south of it fell to it early, the plague was spread among them as late as 1346 (the same year aforementioned warlord in Crimea besieged Genovese trade outpost in modern day Feodosia FOR THE SECOND TIME (he failed a year or two prior and retreated) and used his dead soldiers to plague Italians out of spite (what a guy). The paragraph that mentioned plague ravaging Persians and Tatars and others was mentioned after one expansive piece on 144x-1452 Polish-Lithuanian-Hungarian partition of declined Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia, to which Transcarpathia and surrounding lands belonged for some time. That, apparently, was some epic feudal all-in, even Mongols later joined in 1352 (no mentions of them being plagued, by the way). One can make an uneducated guess that homelands of these warring lords (and their fair ladies) was not ravaged by plague enough to halt their armies, and Mongols moved into modern day Romania for another couple of years, probably because it was mostly unafflicted by pandemic, or just to plunder. We lack information and accounts on pandemic in major towns and cities probably due to how local Slavic population (again, I am talking modern day Ukraine and Russia historical documents, if I was proffecient in Polish or Romanian I could probably find some more) dwindled after the fall of Kievan Rus' to Batu's conquest and due to shifting climate in the century prior to Black Death. Trade route "from the Varangians to the Greeks" was also in decline for some time due to multiple factors, so it makes sense that lack of major trade exchange and ban on Christians from travelling to khanate unless they were to pay tribute and give fealty (and some princes died at that time, probably to plague) proofed Slavic towns and cities from getting infected from the South. Which doesn't exclude some odd local freak accidents, when just one settlement died out (and no-one noticed and wrote about it) because of local merchant falling ill, failing to reach the next one because of how disperced the population was. That steppe is fast to traverse on horse, but if incubation period is only days to week to dozen days and people got severely ill from bacteria, odds would be against plague spreading like wildfire like in Western Europe with dense population and shorter travel time. But I ain't a scholar on the regional history, just an enthusiast, so I might be interpreting data wrong or missing some less known sources and archeological discoveries (like said vanished villages). Wonder how deep they'll go into origins of plague in their game and how they'll tie it in with supernatural occurances resurfacing.
@ I mentioned Karamzin, Russian historian, I also tried googling story of bubonic plague in Russian and Ukrainian lands, I am not sure if I did it right in Ukrainian language, I only have reading comprehension decent enough, not full correct lexicon to search for good publications, and also double checked chonological events of that decade and century to provide context. Ban on Christians traveling into khanate came from some French/English source on geography of pandemics, that map is also shown in many sources with clear cut of area affected in 1346-1347 and later in 1352-1353 coinciding with borders of Eurasian steppe. Feodosia to Uzhgorod are about two weeks travel on horse, but I failed to check seasons biological warfare enjoyer harassed Italian colonies in Crimea, because steppe is traversable only in summer and winter and demiseasons it’s sticky bog of mud
Thanks for the lengthy analysis video on the trailer! I totally missed some things in the trailer. I really liked the presentation, art that they showed, music and they all evoked Witcher 3 vibes which is nothing but a good thing. I will give them the benefit of the doubt regarding the mechanics and time sensitive things that they are planning to do, but I'm willing to concede on it if I can somehow circumvent it or if they don't make it too rough. Everything else, however, speaks to me. From the gritty setting to the vampire & fantasy elements and the presentation all around was impressive. I have faith in their writers that they will make a great RPG. I just hope that their limited 30day/night "narrative sandbox" is not going to affect my explorative side that I want to do all the side content first without affecting the timer mechanic. That's what I fear the most..that I won't be able to see all the content in one playthrough (or most of it). I hate to replay games multiple times to do so..I do not have the time nor patience for that.
I was wondering whether Coen was still fully human at the time of the events in the trailer. Of course he is desperate, but why would one bring their dying baby sister into a vampire nest and ask for help? And not be fazed at all when a group of humans gets brutally slaughtered? The morally grey situation of it all makes it very interesting too. The soldiers just try to stop the plague from spreading to the best of their knowledge. That they take their time seems to indicate to me that they are not actually fond of the idea of killing children, but they have to do something to keep Coen from taking her somewhere and putting others into danger (from their perspective). And the vampires protect their herd whilst also feeding on them.
"I was wondering whether Coen was still fully human at the time of the events in the trailer. Of course he is desperate, but why would one bring their dying baby sister into a vampire nest and ask for help?" I think we were watching different trailer. He didn't know that there will be vampires. You think that a church without a roof is a good vampire nest when these vampires can't walk in during the day? He was just running from the soldiers and maybe He thought that He lost them in those woods, so He went to this old ruins. Where he did ask for help? He is just begin Brencis to let him go. The soldiers burnt all village because of the plague and You say that they didnt wanted to kill the child and they were doing best what they can to not spread the plague? :) And You will not be fazed watching someone killed even if the killers are not from this world for four reasons: 1. All You think about is your dying sister. 2. You live in 14 century, so You watched more horrible stuff than normal human being from 2000s. 4. In this universe there can be monsters that people know about. 3. You see they are not interested in killing You. Pozdrowionka
So a minor observation: Vale Sangora sounds like a mashup of Romanian and Latin(ish)... - "vale" means "valley" in Romanian. From what I know, no other country in which the Carpathians pass through has this word - correct me if wrong, tho - "sangora" sounds like it's referring to "blood", from an etimological POV - the Latin word is "sanguis" So the place would probably roughly translate to something like Blood Valley. And might also be a clue as to the location the game is set in.
Im actually quite surprised at the community reaction to the day/night cycle. Seems somewhat reminisent of the Persona or Disco Elysium in how time passes. Cohh reaction video left be a bit dumbstruck in which he seems like it will be more of a rogue-like system. I myself am not getting that sort of repedative grindy nature from what has been shown. Just because there is a set amount of days doesnt mean your going to be on the clock and for a "run". Anyways, im excited to hear more on your thoughts of the mechanics revealed thus far, and am very impressed with the amount in-depth analysis youve provided in this vid. Great feckin job
I just want to add something . They stated out that they will feature some castle from Romania and Ukraine. In 1347-1353 before and after 200 years Transilvania belonged to Hungary. I heard that some of the elders gang are from Hungary ( BTW Ambrus is a family name my friend have this family name)and Mongolia. Mybe its accurate however as long as they not doing some historycal accurate bull comment like Ubisoft i am fine with bending some accuracy.
Bakir is strange as mongol. They believed in tengrism and spilling blood on the soil was not permitted. They often used drowning as punishment or beating to death prisoners in sack to avoid such thing.
Just a question, I'm only 6 minutes in so far, did they say that the story is set in medieval europe? I got the feeling it was set in a new world but with medieval europe inspiration. Just wanted to clarify.
At the beginning of the trailer there is information that the action takes place in the Carpathians. It is a mountain chain in central Europe, stretching through 8 countries. The game's creators deliberately did not say which part of the Carpathians the valley is located in, as they draw inspiration from the history, culture, and mythology of several different countries, including Poland, Ukraine, Romania, and the Balkan countries.
A roman sword doesn't necessarily mean Brensas himself was a roman soldier, he could have easily just have gotten it from a soldier he killed. A trophy perhaps.
Have bee reading Empire of the Vampire which is an amazing fantasy series. The blood mage bloodline is able to turn part of themselves in a blood mouth they can see through.
Thank you for making what was otherwise a bit of a flaccid first showing a little more palatable; I'm kinda with Slandered in that I was REALLY hoping for a more substantial in-engine presentation of core gameplay loop and "feel" of the engine in-motion, though sadly the extremely brief in-engine stuff was the worst part of it. The intro vid was great however. 🍻
thanks a lot for the interesting video! I can suggest another possible origin for the name Brancis. To my ear, it sounds like a Slavic name that has been "adapted" for easier use by non-Slavic speakers. This process is similar to how the Slavic name Yaroslav became Yartisleiv in Scandinavian sagas or how Vladimir transformed into Valdemar. Following this pattern, Brancis could originally derive from Бранцислав (Brancislav), a name likely originating from Serbia, Croatia, or elsewhere in the Balkans.
Dawnwalker's trailer is more exciting than anything I've seen at the Game Awards. Witcher 4, step aside. Your masters have a new child. Speaking of masters and children, what if Coen is descended from Brencis? Brencis seems to show a certain affection towards him and his sister. If you compare their looks (37:24) they look like they could be blood-related.
Great video. My only pet peeve about Dawnwalker at this point is that there is no character creator or at least option to choose gender of protagonist.
There wasn't in The Witcher games either and TW3 is the greatest RPG ever made. Character creation is not a requirement, and sometimes takes away from the story trying to be told. When the specific character isn't critical to the story, character creation is fine.
All excellent except 30 day night game time limit. We will see if devs will tackle time management in game right - so we will be able to have limited narrative choices but still be able to level up and get all items we want.
far from be an expert in roman swords, it is the first time i see a pommel like that on a gladius, the gladius i see everywhere is round like a ball, the one on the vampire belt has a flat pommel like a sword from the time of the gameplay.
Never really been into vampire games. The only one that I thought was awesome was The Witcher 3 expansion Blood and Wine. But I think that is because most vampire games are terrible. And these guys had a major part in crafting Blood and Wine... and this looks awesome. So I'm ready.
I really hope they will embrace more religious concepts apart from the desacralization of Christian Eucharist. I hope the sacred element will be made even more integral through questing and choices
In English it is pronounced that way just like Italy is called Italy and not Italia or Rome is called Rome and not Roma. If I were speaking or pronouncing in Classical Latin I would have done it the way you suggested but since it a video in English using English I used the English way to pronounce Caesar.
Well we now know what Witcher 4 WONT be and why. And I’m here for it. I prefer this. I’m glad the devs broke away. They are everything we loved about the Witcher and it makes me more skeptical of the next installment. And I am ok with that. Let it die. From the ashes rises DawnWalker and without these devs leaving we wouldn’t have it in our somewhat near future.
To me vampyr is the best vampire game, I'm throw off by what the developers said about "not wanting the main character to be overpowered " yet they are going to make you fight as human in day time and force you to do stealth missions which to me shows their lack of creativity inspiration and modern days mentality of everything need to be realistic and grounded, I want to play as a badas extremely powerful vampire lord

Uriaș is a giant in Romanian folklore (check the Wikipedia page for a quick explanation, the one in Romanian has a couple more points)). Awesome video, friend, and an excellent starting point for a real discussion! P.S. I am a bit wary of the time mechanic.
So the more they age the more they wither ??? Wouldn't this mean they will die in the end and that they are not immortal vampires... just vampires who have a long life ?????
They may be taking the antediluvian route... The older they get the less human they look, and the more capricious they get. In Vampire: The Masquerade, the oldest of vampires often seem monstrous or shriveled like mummies, but they get immensely powerful. I'm curious if this game is going to go down that path, and whether it'll incorporate some kind of diablerie. This is such a unique take on the Vampyr mythology that it's difficult to guess. Can't wait to find out more! 😀
Eucharist is a Catholic tradition only and was one of the division points in the church that led to Protestant Movement. I find it interesting the wordplay used and deception at play with the words the vampire speaks. Though Scripture explains why evil things happen to people and even believers, he points to the one as lacking and offers the same thing. The difference is one was of the spirit, he offers what is of the flesh. An immortal sinner was the goal of Satan in the garden, so vampires would be the fulfillment of that and humanity would need to be destroyed if so. Fantasy setting and God likely doesn't exist in that world (I think), so a powerplay on that scale wouldn't happen and complicate things for devs navigating it.
He wouldn't be older than Christianity as people tend to make a mistake in their distinction. Not sure if deliberate or not. Judeo-Christianity stemmed from Judaism. The only difference was the fact one said Christ was the Messiah and the other denied him, but afterward Judaism took on pagan and occult teachings and sects formed within in. It was happening in Christ's time even. So if they are the same in essence, it would date as far back as the first civilizations and depending on belief, before then.

This and Exodus are easily my most anticipated games in years! Thanks for the epic breakdown! My your spell guide your shield.
Same though I have to admit Dawnwalker took #1 for me!
@ yeah me too! This is what gaming needs. Passion and freedom for devs
I am SO fuckin down for this game!! I'm so excited!!!
I played Vampyr and Vampire Masquerades. I quite like what I’m seeing with this so far.
It’ll be interesting to see how it plays alongside Witcher 4.
Appreciate the comment!
@@spellandshield Thank you!
I went to dig in a little futher into bubonic plague mentions in modern day Ukraine and Russia in 14 century from our historians for an hour. Here's what I found:
Western scholars were rather ignorant to plights of Slavs and especially Asians, while the latter had plague outbreaks like this for millenia prior to arrival of Black Death in Europe.
Where do I read about this kind of history?
@ I mean, yeah the plague devastated Asia too...we just don't talk about it much in the West.
The creators said that side quests will have no impact on the 30-hour plot.
@@ArthurDiegoMcDermottUK Well that's good to know.
As an old lady with old lady reflexes, I really hope they have a "narrative" difficulty.
And You will not be fazed watching someone killed even if the killers are not from this world for four reasons: 1. All You think about is your dying sister. 2. You live in 14 century, so You watched more horrible stuff than normal human being from 2000s. 4. In this universe there can be monsters that people know about. 3. You see they are not interested in killing You.

So a minor observation: Vale Sangora sounds like a mashup of Romanian and Latin(ish)...
- "vale" means "valley" in Romanian. From what I know, no other country in which the Carpathians pass through has this word - correct me if wrong, tho
- "sangora" sounds like it's referring to "blood", from an etimological POV - the Latin word is "sanguis"
So the place would probably roughly translate to something like Blood Valley. And might also be a clue as to the location the game is set in.
I am aware.
@spellandshield Ok. 👀
Amazing video
You're analysis is great! I'm cautiously optimistic of this game. I hope it plays similar to Witcher 3. Looks amazing so far.
Im actually quite surprised at the community reaction to the day/night cycle. Seems somewhat reminisent of the Persona
or Disco Elysium in how time passes.
Now I understand why it took so long 😂. Great video by the way
I just want to add something .
In the absence of Legacy of Kain, I’m ready for this!! Most anticipated game!!
Bakir is strange as mongol. They believed in tengrism and spilling blood on the soil was not permitted. They often used drowning as punishment or beating to death prisoners in sack to avoid such thing.
That was for the blood of nobles. The mongols of all people, I assure you, didn't have problems 'spilling Blood'.
That would track though, since these vamps hate wasting/spilling blood without need.
Great video! Thank you👍
I was waiting for you specifically to talk about this 😂 no other channel
Opening: there are known knowns, unknown knowns and unknown unknowns.
Where did you get all the game info like names etc?
Check the games official youtube channel
Dawnwalkergame on Twitch.
so darn awesome
Just a question, I'm only 6 minutes in so far, did they say that the story is set in medieval europe? I got the feeling it was set in a new world but with medieval europe inspiration. Just wanted to clarify.
It is set in Medieval Europe. I talk about it extensively.
This is not a video. This is a university level cultural history lecture.
Thanks but it is just a video lol.
A roman sword doesn't necessarily mean Brensas himself was a roman soldier, he could have easily just have gotten it from a soldier he killed. A trophy perhaps.
Great video!!
Have bee reading Empire of the Vampire which is an amazing fantasy series. The blood mage bloodline is able to turn part of themselves in a blood mouth they can see through.
Good deep dive 🙂
Thank you for making what was otherwise a bit of a flaccid first showing a little more palatable; I'm kinda with Slandered in that I was REALLY hoping for a more substantial in-engine presentation of core gameplay loop and "feel" of the engine in-motion, though sadly the extremely brief in-engine stuff was the worst part of it. The intro vid was great however. 🍻
Eastern Europe games are rare, especially AAA. I'm happy and excited for this. 🎉
thanks a lot for the interesting video!
It has been officialy confirmed that he Roman by the devs at this stage.
Thanks. I think it is ok sometimes to have a fixed protagonist, it adds a certain character and personality to the game and protagonist.
I plan on talking about the time management thing in a separate video.
I need another good vampire game, and I fear VMT:B2 will fall short of its predecessor by a mile.
far from be an expert in roman swords, it is the first time i see a pommel like that on a gladius, the gladius i see everywhere is round like a ball, the one on the vampire belt has a flat pommel like a sword from the time of the gameplay.
Well, regardless, he is confirmed to have been Roman so...
Knez is used in Serbia,we even have water name Knjaz Milos ^^
Yes, it is a common Slavic word.
Never really been into vampire games. The only one that I thought was awesome was The Witcher 3 expansion Blood and Wine.
But I think that is because most vampire games are terrible. And these guys had a major part in crafting Blood and Wine... and this looks awesome.
So I'm ready.
Witcher but with vampires, alright I'm in.
Very different from Witcher actually.
@spellandshield we'll see, I bet it feels like a reskin lol
Surprised this took so long xD
Holy Deep Dive Batman!
This is the fellow people tried to label a grifter btws xD
I feel like the gameplay is gonna be similar to shadow of war an that’s one of my favorite game
The Blood of Don Walker
Great latin pronounciation by the way, you sounded like a native italian.
I really hope they will embrace more religious concepts apart from the desacralization of Christian Eucharist. I hope the sacred element will be made even more integral through questing and choices
Agreed. I'm Catholic and I feel that allegory is very necessary in art.
finally!
Really well done analysis but "Caesar" is pronounced Kai-ay-zahr" not "See-za".
In English it is pronounced that way just like Italy is called Italy and not Italia or Rome is called Rome and not Roma. If I were speaking or pronouncing in Classical Latin I would have done it the way you suggested but since it a video in English using English I used the English way to pronounce Caesar.
The vampires of this universe would be alot of weaker than the witcher vampires
Sure, these are more traditional ones.
If ya get blood mage powers from siding with “Sante” if that’s how you spell it 🤦🏼♂️
Well we now know what Witcher 4 WONT be and why.
They lost me at coen
To me vampyr is the best vampire game, I'm throw off by what the developers said about "not wanting the main character to be overpowered " yet they are going to make you fight as human in day time and force you to do stealth missions which to me shows their lack of creativity inspiration and modern days mentality of everything need to be realistic and grounded, I want to play as a badas extremely powerful vampire lord
@@alsimmonshellspawn6021 There's no logic to your argument. To you, doing something you don't like equates to a lack of creativity. Maybe you should start making your own games then.
@MyNindo2000 you just mad I have my own opinion on what a good vampire game should be
I almost thought I was on the wrong channel 😅😂
Random thought but it would’ve been cool if Dragon Age had vampires back when it was good
I'm tired of the chaotic good monster trope.
There rumors that The Witcher 4 got cancelled. Dawnwalker will be the best Game ever
The Witcher 4 must be your favorite game since you can't stop talking about it. You're just as bad as anyone assuming the Witcher 4 is guaranteed to be good.
@MyNindo2000 No one thinks The Witcher 4 will be good.
@@exysa2798That doesn't change what I said. Stop whining about it and grow up. Maturing is realizing that you shouldn't focus on things that don't serve you and focus on what makes you happy. If you have to make your own happiness by letting an unreleased game live rent-free in your head, then you need a reality check. Get help.
That latin accent sounds unconvincing.
nothing special tbh
I feel like this is gonna flop.
I'm pretty sure that's just the stink wafting off of the word vampire dye to another upcoming vampire "RPG"
You sure you don't want it to, because other than that, there's legitimately no valid reason to assume it will as of NOW.
@@grayearly3116 yes. I have been solemn since legacy of kain faded into obscurity. There’s a remake I think so I’ll be ok lol
@@MyNindo2000 I’m an apostate to believing in the gaming industry at this point. This channel does give me hope tho, so i hope im wrong
Withering need not lead to destruction, as noctoi said, could just be more inhuman appearance.
Well look at that! Didn’t have to wait very long, now that’s some good service right here 😂
Thanks for the upload! 🤌
