This optic shows the advantage of m43 in terms of compacity. I got other Leica zooms from Leica and the quality of build is really great. I do think that due to ibis stab , compacity and price it s a good combination with a g9 or om-d E1 mk ii or iii to begin wildlife at a contained budget.
Thank you for your extensive review, Mathieu! You get your money's worth with this lens, instead of getting the 100-300mm version. A retirement bird photography wish list, this would be. Just need to have good lighting (or bump the iso) due to its slow speed. Buying the 100-300 version at around USD500.00 and with thoughts of "if I could have just saved a bit more" would come around your head at times when shots made does not fit your expectations. EM-1 user here with 45-200mm panasonic vario g at this time (got it so cheap and almost new).
Nice! Thanks! I'll put on my wish list. As you know, you get what you pay for. But, there's also 80/20. I'd like a 400 mm lens, but for $500, I'm happy with the Lumix 100-300 at 1/3rd the price.... for now. This lens is the next class up!
Thank you so much, Mathieu. This is EXACTLY the review I've been hoping for. I really appreciate that you put this lens on the EM-1 and tested the optical stabilization. It sounds like the lens stabilization does just fine on that body. For someone who's not a wildlife fanatic, this lens could be a nice compromise. Not as sharp as the Oly 300 prime, but I probably won't notice the difference while I'm saving nearly a 1,000 bucks. Again - thanks. I love the work you guys do!
+Dustinrhoades the OIS does fine and will give similar results on any M4/3 camera and that's a good thing in my opinion. The lens is an excellent compromise:)

Always enjoy your reviews Mathieu. Comprehensive, short, and efficient!
Thank you for the great review! I have noticed on several images that the rendering of the subjects are ´´leica like´´. Somehow they look creamy sharp, especially the feather of the birds etc... looks like a great micro contrast. At time the leica bookeh is also visible. Did you notice it similarly? Does that stand apart from the Olympus 300mm for you?
+Antal Racz I noticed some Leica look too. The bokeh is not perfect but at times you do get a nice rendering. Not entirely sure how well it compares to the 300mm but I would say they are similar.
Many photos from animals you find on my Facebook Page Dieter Lochschmidt . Many great photos with animal, it is joy to use it...facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1088730081204581&set=pcb.1088732544537668&type=3&theater
With the MC-14 teleconverter, the Olympus 300mm f4 lens becomes a 420mm f5.6 lens, which means it can reach even farther AND at a faster aperture. Of course, it is more expensive. I'd be thrilled to own either one, if I could afford it.
Hi Mathieu, Great reviews. I was just wondering if you could clarify for me whether or not you recommend this lens for use on the EM-1? I understand you got pretty good results from it, but how well does it match to the EM-1? Thanks again, Pete
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) thank you for your quick reply. one more question if you'd be so kind... just your general impression of the lens? how sharp is it out at 400? How sharp is the lens compared to the Olympus 75-300 (or even the Olympus 300 f/4) as a point of reference. thanks again for your excellent videos.
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) maybe an easier way to ask is what is it like to use on Olympus compared to on a Panasonic body? because all the reviews are done on Panasonic bodies.
the lens is very sharp at 300mm and 400mm. The Olympus 300mm f/4 Pro might have a slight advantage concerning sharpness but the difference is not huge (based on my experience with the two lenses but I didn't have them side by side). It's more the extra stop of aperture that can help. There isn't a relevant difference when used on a Olympus body. Actually I prefer to use the E-M1 in C-AF because of phase detection, I find the camera more reliable for birds in flight for example.
Hi Mathieu, One question I have regarding this lens and other weathersealed MFT lenses. Is the weathersealing capabilities also shared between different brands? For example, if I use a Lumix weathersealed lens on an Olympus weathersealed body and vixe-versa, will the combo maintain its weathersealed capability? I don't have problems mixing and matching different brands of MFT bodies and lenses. But when it comes to weathersealing, I'm always a bit reluctant to use a combo with different brands.
Hi Fabio, to my knowledge weather sealing is shared between Olympus and Panasonic products. It all comes down to the specific build design of each products, so if one Pana lens is weather sealed, it will remain so on an Olympus weather sealed camera and vice versa.
Mathieu Gasquet Thanks Mathieu. That really makes me feel more confortable with the idea of buying some Lumix weathersealed lenses for my E-M5. Cheers!
Hello Mathieu, Following your video about zoom comparison of 100-400, I finally decided to buy Panasonic one ( new type II compatible with TC). I have Olympus camera OMD EM1 mark2. I have 2 questions: 1/ I don’t have access to Procap L, only Procap H is available: Is it Normal? 2/Is it working well Olympus MC14 (instead of Panasonic TC one, too expensive )with my configuration ? Thanks for your support and reply Daniel
Yes, Pro Capture only works in H mode with non Olympus lenses on the E-M1 II. I am not sure if the MC14 works well on the Pana lens, or if you need to buy the Panasonic TC, I never had the chance to test that specific configuration.
Thank you for you channel. It's great. I have been searching and googleing to try to get more infor about the switch ... Full/5 meters. I got help from you in this video about it. Just so I am clear. If I am shooting something more then 5 meters away I should put the switch on FULL?
8:42 Panasonic GX8 "severe" shutter shock - I have this camera and didn't really notice, can you recommend any thorough testing in real-life scenarios - I mean, if it serious and part of my photos were ruined by this effect - I'll sell GX8 immediately.
We had lots of shutter shock when shooting between 1/60s and 1/320s on the GX8, often when using long focal lengths. This is one of the reason why Panasonic implemented a new shutter mechanism in the most recent models like the GX85, G85 and GH5. However we also know of users who didn't encounter such a problem on their GX8. If your images are perfectly sharp with those shutter speeds, maybe your copy is not affected. Using the electronic shutter can also be a partial solution as long as you are not shooting action or under artificial lights.
Hi Mathieu, I am currently using the Panasonic /Leica100-400mm with the EM1 MK II body for birding and wildlife photography and video. Have the focus on the lens set to full with Stabilisation turned on, also using the camera in body 5 axis stabilisation of the EM1 MK II.... the stabilisation of this combination at 400mm - (800mm FF equivalent) is insane!! Been using for a week getting used to the settings etc. I was dubious of using the two together, so far I have been blown away by the combined performance.. even in low light it gets that focus in a blink and rock steady... Loving it! traded in my Nikon D750+Sigma 150 - 600mm Granted the quality of the pic are not as good with more noise that the D750 above 1600 but I rarely shoot above 1200 ISO.. for what my needs are and convenience of size and portability I am more than happy.
Hi Antonio, the two stabilisations (sensor + lens) don't work together in this case. The camera is probably prioritising the sensor stabilisation (there is a setting in the Menu to give the lens priority).
Hi. I have just suscribed and would like to ask a question regarding the ibis on this lens. I have just ordered the 100-400 to use with my G80. Are you saying i should switch off the ibis on the lens when on the g80 and or leave it switched on! Thanks.
In my search in April 2021 in Western Australia for Sports or Wildlife photography for the Panasonic GX9 with the Leica 100-400mm lens, yours was the first and almost the last video that came up. I found your video most useful and still valid even though 5 years have elapsed since you made it. I have a G9 and the Leica 100-400mm for both Sports (my 2 sons mainly) and Wildlife (mainly birds and birds in flight) but for Sports when the action gets closer the 100-400 cannot be used. So the solution to enable me to use my Panasonic 14-140mm lens had to be another camera but not another expensive G9. I first tried a second hand G95 about half the price of a G9) but that soon went so my second choice was a second hand GX9. It is still in transit and imagine it would give similar results as your GX8 if I fitted the 100-400mm lens to it but as I said it will have the 14-140mm lens for outdoor Sports most of the time. BTW it would have been good to mention the GX8 in the title of the video.
I've used the 100-400mm with many cameras, G9, G85, E-M1 II etc. The GX8 was the one available at the time. Another lens you could think about is the 35-100mm 2.8 (unless you need a shorter focal length). There might be some good deals second hand (search for the mk II version if possible).
+Greg Thurtle the 100-300mm is softer, especially at 200mm and 300. Slower AF motor and OIS less effective by 1 stop approximately. A video comparison will be available shortly. You can also check out our article here: www.mirrorlessons.com/2016/03/10/panasonic-100-400mm-vs-100-300mm/
The bokeh looks good, because of the Leica label, I was expecting better sharpness then some of the lens testing sites got from it. The Olympus seems to outperform it easily, but neither lens is matching the best pro grade telephotos from Canikon. For hiking, this 100-400 could be useful. Thanks.
how does this compare vs olympus 40-150mm f2.8 pro + mc-2 converter on an em1m2 body? of course there is a difference in reach. how about autofocus speed, accuracy and image quality?
Hello, I am Olympus omd em1.2 owner. I have lumix 100-300mm mk1 but I am not satisfy with AFS or AFC. I can not take moving subjects or birds in flight. Is the leica 100-400mm solve this problem? What about bokeh background results? Thank you
Top job Mathieu. I should have my 100-400mm next week so I am pleased that you highlighted the fact that the lens IS is slightly better than IBIS on the EM1 at 400mm. I assume that it can't be used in sync with the IBIS. I also have the Olympus 300mm f4 PRO on order but I have just been apprised that it may not be available until June/July - though I had been told that it would be earlier. I use two EM1 bodies and felt that one of each lens would cover all wildlife bases. I recently changed from Canon and used a 100 - 400 mark 11 and 300mm f2.8 on a 7D mark 11 and 70D so, from my point of view, it makes sense to have one of each. Thank you for your excellent assessment of both lenses.
+pete draper Unfortunately you can't use both ibis and OIS together on the E-M1 with the Pana 100-400. Only the 300mm pro works that way (on the E-M1 and E-M5 II).
Here's something to add about the shutter shock issue on the GX8 that I found on another site: "Firmware v2.0 added an 'Auto' option for Electronic Shutter, which switches from the mechanical to electronic shutter when 'shock' is most likely. The behavior appears to depend on the lens used. With the 14-140mm F3.5-5.6 and the 12-35mm F2.8, the camera would switch to fully electronic shutter mode for shutter speeds between 1/60th and 1/250th of a second (except in Manual exposure mode, where mechanical shutter is maintained)…. Where available, this workaround takes care of the problem in most situations. It even appears to be smart enough to detect subject movement, which should avoid the effects of rolling shutter."
Mathieu Gasquet GH5, GH4 and GX80. I Would like to have the Em1 or the G9 but I dont, because Im mainly a Kameramann... working with Video. But birding and Wildlife fotografy are My Hobbys. Thanks for your Answer. You do a Great Job!
I own alredy the Oly 75-300... that has no OIS, is not weather sealed, is not sharp... :).... but I Love! It is super small, light, and works well with my GX80. But now its Time for more. That's why I wrote asking for your opinion.
I would choose a Panasonic/Leica lens for a Panasonic body, that ensures better AF performance for birds in flight, and you also get Dual IS. I like the 100-400mm for its versatility and extra reach, I've used it many times. It's a sharp lens and reasonably compact. The slow aperture can be annoying if you don't have optimal light conditions however. The 200mm is a superb lens and comes with the TC 1.4X teleconverter, but it is more expensive.
Hi Mathieu! I have a fuji XT-1 and a panasonic GX8 and am contemplating between both brand's 100-400mm telephoto lens. You have reviewed both of them. Which one would you choose given the choice? Thanks!
The best results I got right now are with the X-Pro2 and XF 100-400mm. I'll test the lens again with the X-T2 after Photokina and I bet I will get the same results if not even better. When it comes to optical quality, I find both lenses to be on the same level really. It's more the combination with the camera and right now Fuji is doing better with the AF for birds in flight etc. That could change with the Olympus E-M1 successor. The Pana lens is smaller and that is a good advantage. The Fuji lens isn't smaller than a DSLR lens. Reply ·
Thanks Mathieu! If i had an xpro 2 or an xt2 then no doubt I would get the fuji 100-400. However with an xt1 and a gx8, I'm leaning more towards the panasonic 100-400 just because of the size difference specially since you said both are optically on the same level. :)
Hi Dear Mathieu, me again. for the Alaska, need a long focus solution for bears and wheals. I am considering canon 100-400 II mounted to A7R2 via MB4, or panosonic GX8 with 100-400. I have tried GX85 + 45-175 lens, but not satisfied with the image quality especially the color sensitive(dynamic? ) when shot people their eyes seems only has black colore. not sure if this is still the case with GX8+100-400 lens? while canon + A7r2 solution I am a little worry about the weather sealing is not there. especially I use an adopter... your suggestions? :)
The optical quality of the 100-400mm is definitely better than the 45-175 but if you don't like the IQ of the GX85, you won't like the one of the GX8 (sensors are very similar). Unfortunately I don't think there are any weather sealed mount adaptor.
Hi Mathieu, I have the Olympus OMD em5 mkII and I'm thinking of buying this lens to get some surfing footage, Did you notice any problems using this lens with the Olympus body? Thank you! Great review!
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons if i'm holding my camera perfectly level... and I turn it 45 degrees trying to take a vertical shot, I would only be halfway there... 45 deg is useless at that point.
I own an Olympus OMD EM-1 MkII. I want to purchase a long lens for birding, concert photography and other general use. Are there any comments about the stiff focus on the Panasonic 100 - 400 mm. I can't decide between the Panasonic 100 -400 and Olympus 300 mm f4. The zoom adds great versatility but many people report the zoom is too stiff and a significant problem. Comments are greatly appreciated.
I've used different copies of the 100-400mm: some had a really stiff zoom ring (especially the first samples), others were better but none had a 100% smooth ring.
At first you said the stiff turning barrel was just a per-production issue. But, that issue has carried over to the final production models. That is still one on the biggest user complaints and a very big downside when shooting video.
I've used different samples of that lens since I made this video and although the zoom ring was better on the latest production samples, it still isn't as smooth as we would like it to be.
For one looking to choose a photo-system (Fuji or m43), would you say that this lens is sharper or softer than the Fuji 100-400 you also reviewed? Thanks.
+The Late Night Gamer I'm testing the Fuji 100-400mm right now. I would say that the optical performance is very close between the two. With the X-Pro2 especially you get better AF (especially if compared to the GX8) and sligthly better IQ thanks to the larger sensor and higher resolution. But the Fuji lens is much heavier than the Pana lens.
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) Thank you very much for answering. Much appreciated. Weight is a factor and price of course. X-Pro2 is almost twice to cost of the GX8 here - but no shutter shock of course :/ Though choice but a bit easier to go with mu43 if the lenses are optically close.
good review, I've also read your review on Fuji 100-400 and just wanted to buy one of them, which one is better in view of image quality and video taking?
I've XT2 and like fuji 100-400 but it is a little bit big and heavy, then I saw your review on Panasonic 100-400 which is small and attractive, just worries the difference between their image quality as I sold gx7 to upgrade to Fuji for Panasonic's foggy image quality and fair low night performance, I am also considering to buy Sony rx10 iii for taking video for daughter's sport competition, any advice please?
Hi can you put into words, as to what I would gain using full format camera such as a Canon 5D Mk3, I am very critical about the sharpness of my photographs. regards, colin.
If you use your camera at low ISO mainly for landscapes, the advantage can be less noticeable concerning sharpness. The E-M1 files are sharp already and if you use a good m4/3 lens, you can get excellent results. The benefit of a full frame sensor can be an higher resolution which means fine details and sharper results when printing large. You would also have an advantage of a vaster dynamic range but one solution with the E-M1 is to use AE or HDR bracketing to get better results. The answer is yes, a full frame sensor will give you better results but it depends if you are just worrying about sharpness, often a good lens is the solution.
compare this to an apsc sensor body with a 150-600mm tamron or sigma. That would be revealing. The gx8+100-400mm lens is close to $3000 US. You can get a canon 70D or nikon d7100 with the 150-600mm (equiv 250-940mm) for less then $2000. Apart from the huge price +$1000 premium for the m43 kit - I want to know if the m43 kit is "as good" or better then the cheaper canon/nikon alternative. And yes I know the m43 is smaller (but not hugely)...it's the issue of image quality which needs to be addressed. Which is better for photos.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Thank you so much Mathieu for such a wonderful review. Now I am very confident to get this lens for my Pen-f for now and in the long run, I might consider getting E-M1 mark II or E-M5 mark III. What would you perceive the advantage of using E-M1 mark II and E-M5 mark III comparing to that of Pen-f? Thanks again Mathieu.
+carmas54 yes, perhaps you could get slightly better AF performance. I find the GX85 (and G85) a little bit faster with moving subjects but they still struggle with difficult subjects such as BIF.
hi I'm using canon 7d mark ii and lens canon 100-400 mark 2 I would like to buy something light or panasonic GX8 lens and 100-400 is a good selection with a bird photography?
not sure you can get much better than that setup for birding bro.... why do you need lighter weight? just another curious photographer, and as Mathieu said, you wont get better AF performance, and honestly if you've already spent the money on that setup, bring it with you wherever you go, that is about as good as it gets, I personally want the best results I can get, I'll take the weight penalty any day, btw are you getting good results with the canon gear?
the GX8 vs E-M1 grip difference is not just E-M1 better grip, but as well a centered EVF as it supported correctly on eye, it will keep camera rotation axis around the lens Z axis instead on camera body left top corner like the corner EVF causes. And I can get better grip for E-M1 than for GX8 by placing right hand little finger below the grip so it supports the shutter release button press more too. And then using correct shutter release style, using finger first joint instead tip, you get very steady releases. And same time you get to keep finger around the front dial to make adjustments, and rear dial under thumb to be dialed as well. So grip is very tight and balanced and all settings are possible to do without taking finger off from shutter or from rear dial\support. It is sad that GX8 used range finder style doesn't support this at all so well. And with E-M1 you can press (not by mistake) Menu/Info/Playback buttons without loosing a grip. And of course AFL/AEL and 2x2 leveler is just next to thumb. Somehow that is so well designed that it makes big difference in fast situation, especially because at front the two Fn buttons are as well just below middle and ring fingers. I am so often amazed that Panasonic still doesn't offer the same level design. G7 comes closer but something odd on that as well. I like the 100-400mm design that buttons stay on left when rotating the body to vertical!
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) I personally would go further and say it has better than any Canon or Nikon DSLR. I know it sounds a stretch for many, and it is more personal question does someone like huge grip that is like holding a phone book, but I found myself in that position after custom to those two brands grips since first Canon "rubber soapbox" and Nikon D2x. For me E-M1 grip causes fear as likely Olympus ruins it when they release E-M1 II if they change it. But they actually might be able improve it too, while very difficult. But then again I don't find much problems with GM1 "grip" as I can accept it's small camera and requires a very "gentle" handling, like you should handle a lady ;-)
+paristo I hope that Olympus won't change the E-M1 grip/design too much. They might improve things even more like they did for the other cameras (E-M5 vs E-M5 II, E-M10 vs E-M10 II). I also love the two Fn buttons on the front near the grip, very useful to bring back the AF point at the centre for example.
+miren arrieta if it's outdoor yes it can be an excellent lens to use. But if you can get close to the athletes, there is also the 40-150mm 2.8 from Olympus. Which camera would you use?
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) Just got the lens and took a few shots, so far I’m very impressed. I compared it to my 40-150 f/2.8 at 100, 150 and 210 (with 1.4x tc) and it’s very similar in sharpness at like apertures, of course the 40-150 is around a stop faster depending on which focal length you’re at. But you give up some sharpness for the f/2.8. And the kicker is the bokeh. It’s always been the Achilles heel of the 40-150. I don’t consider myself to be super critical when it comes to bokeh but it’s truly awful. I shoot a lot of wildlife with busy backgrounds and they’re super distracting, lots of double lines. The 100-400 crushes it from a bokeh standpoint. Sure there is still some busyness but it’s way better than the 40-150. I’d say I can probably sell my 1.4x tc because I can’t imagine accepting the bokeh difference for 2/3 of a stop (f/4 vs f/5.1 at 210mm). I’ll keep the 40-150 for now because that 40-100 range is super useful but I wonder how often it’ll get used. Thanks again for the great review, it tipped the scales in favor of me ordering this amazing lens and I’m very happy that I did.
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) It's decent. It gets a bit stiffer towards the long end. It's definitely not buttery smooth like the 40-150 f/2.8 but that's an internal zoom. It's not bad by any stretch. I'd say improved over your sample for sure.
Yes I did. It's a good combo for wildlife photography, the only limitation is birds in flight, especially when the bird is against a busy background: there, the DfD contrast AF system of the camera can struggle a lot. I haven't tested the very late firmware update to see if there are some improvements however.
Zoom ring problem is solved? Because I have a sample which is really unconfortable and hard to turn with also a noisy clicky iris. So I think the real situation of the entire model production.
I used this lens for two years and optically it is a great piece of glass. But I did have problems with the zoom ring being way too stiff. I wonder if you or your other subscribers, have had a chance to use the newest Olympus 100-400 zoom and how the zoom ring resistance is different, better or whatever compared to the Leica designed Panasonic lens.
Have it with me since tuesday (2 days) and have shot very little with it. Why is the zooming so stiff is beyond me. The ring on for the tripod mount (collar) is silky smooth. And yes, I used the lens unlocked....Does it get loser over time otherwise I may return it.But first will use it over the weekend. It seems just a tiny bit lessstiff than my 100-300 for those of you who cannot compare and wonder how it does...Other than that the difference between the two is huge. 100-400 just breahts quality, much much much better C-AF ( I could tell that). And on a GH4 it seems a very good fit.
I get 5% keepers with em1ii. At close distance up to 10m it is tack sharp. At 20 meters you can tell there might be a bird there. The lens/camera combo became useless for me.

thanks for that review! one impressive lens! m43 is so compact - really no comparison to that heavy dslr setups... not sure if I will go with this lens soon - just invested in a 12-35 2.8 which looks amazing. check my channel for some drones and tech stuff (now shot with the GX8/12-35@2.8 ;-)
This presentation was very nice to me, very clear, with a lot of details. I enjoyed a lot!!!
Great review Mathieu, nice to see a review with the GX8.
Thanks! That feels like a very long time ago now, but I remember the GX8 very well.
Nice!
It's a great lens for concert photography too. I'm very satisfied with mine.

With the MC-14 teleconverter, the Olympus 300mm f4 lens becomes a 420mm f5.6 lens, which means it can reach even farther AND at a faster aperture. Of course, it is more expensive. I'd be thrilled to own either one, if I could afford it.
Hi Mathieu,
Great reviews.
I was just wondering if you could clarify for me whether or not you recommend this lens for use on the EM-1?
I understand you got pretty good results from it, but how well does it match to the EM-1?
Thanks again,

It works very well on the E-M1. AF is fast and the grip of the camera is excellent with a lens that sized.
Excellent. You've been more than helpful. I'm looking forward to getting this lens now...Now to save up.
Hi I read something about the tight focus ring, something like you have to turn it clock wise first to unlock it....
It's not the smoothest focus ring around but I don't need to turn it one way or the other to unlock it.
Hi Mathieu,
One question I have regarding this lens and other weathersealed MFT lenses.
Cheers!
Hello Mathieu,
Following your video about zoom comparison of 100-400, I finally decided to buy Panasonic one ( new type II compatible with TC).
I have Olympus camera OMD EM1 mark2.
I have 2 questions:
1/ I don’t have access to Procap L, only Procap H is available: Is it Normal?
2/Is it working well Olympus MC14 (instead of Panasonic TC one, too expensive )with my configuration ?
Thanks for your support and reply
Daniel
Yes, Pro Capture only works in H mode with non Olympus lenses on the E-M1 II.
I am not sure if the MC14 works well on the Pana lens, or if you need to buy the Panasonic TC, I never had the chance to test that specific configuration.
Thank you for you channel. It's great. I have been searching and googleing to try to get more infor about the switch ... Full/5 meters. I got help from you in this video about it. Just so I am clear. If I am shooting something more then 5 meters away I should put the switch on FULL?
If you shoot something CLOSER than 5 meters, you should put the switch to full.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Thank You and Thank you.
Mathieu Gasquet thank you for comment. was SS noticeable on some specific lenses (14-140 specifically) or the effect wasn't that lens-dependant?
it wasn't lens dependant.
Thanks.
They are connected. If you switch it off on the lens, it will switch off on the camera as well.
How did you get on with the GX9 and this lens?
Thanks for a great review. However you have made it very hard to decide between this and the Oly f4 lens.
greg review Mathieu.
How you like it compared to the older 100-300mm?
+Greg Thurtle the 100-300mm is softer, especially at 200mm and 300. Slower AF motor and OIS less effective by 1 stop approximately. A video comparison will be available shortly. You can also check out our article here:
www.mirrorlessons.com/2016/03/10/panasonic-100-400mm-vs-100-300mm/
Thank you
Would you recommend this lens for a Lumix gx85 for birding?
Yes it's a great lens and I have used it on different micro four thirds body.
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) As I thought, thanks for the confirmation and prompt reply.
Thanks for the review, looks to be a great lens.
does 400mm on a 4/3 camera fill the frame with the same subject more than 400mm on an APS-c sensor?
Very good review. Simple and to the point. Thx ! Very helpful.
+John Packard I tried the Auto option as well but in my findings the camera would often choose the mechanical shutter.
Hmm... Can't remember the reviewer I pulled that quote from, but they did say they thought it worked well.
Great video! If you had to choose between one, which would you choose: Leica 200, Oly 300 or Leica 100-400? Why?
On which camera body?
Matieu, this is maybe best review I have ever seen. I didnt see much :D. But realy helpfull with a lot of specific detail. Thanks.
thanks!

Thank you a lot for your review. My question is: is possible to use this lens without a tripod or other support (I have a Olympus OM-D EM-5 MKII)
I've used it hand held many times. If it is mainly for stills, than yes it is possible.

Hi Mathieu, I have the Olympus OMD em5 mkII and I'm thinking of buying this lens to get some surfing footage, Did you notice any problems using this lens with the Olympus body? Thank you! Great review!
I used it on the E-M1 and it worked really well.
I am renting this for a trip to Yellowstone NP in a few weeks. Super excited!
the colar rotates 45 degrees? i'm assuming you meant 90, right?
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons if i'm holding my camera perfectly level... and I turn it 45 degrees trying to take a vertical shot, I would only be halfway there... 45 deg is useless at that point.
Sorry, I got mixed up, it's 90˚ of course, you're right!
Thanks you for your reply. Do you have a strong preference between the Olympus 300 mm f4 and Panasonic 100 - 400 mm? Both have pros & cons.
At first you said the stiff turning barrel was just a per-production issue. But, that issue has carried over to the final production models. That is still one on the biggest user complaints and a very big downside when shooting video.
I've used different samples of that lens since I made this video and although the zoom ring was better on the latest production samples, it still isn't as smooth as we would like it to be.
yes the stiff zoom remains as well as the unusuable tripod mounting unit!
So sorry.. But is this compatible withe the G85? In the Florida keys and need a longer lens for wildlife..
Yes it is.
A great review as always Mathieu
+Paul Taylor thanks Paul.
does lense's OIS works together with built in stabilization in Olympus om-d cameras?
no, only with Panasonic cameras.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons looking for a zoom lens for Olympus em1 mark2 to replace my Sigma 150-600 c, but afraid to have any quality downgrade...
Which camera(s) do you use?
I've XT2 and like fuji 100-400 but it is a little bit big and heavy, then I saw your review on Panasonic 100-400 which is small and attractive, just worries the difference between their image quality as I sold gx7 to upgrade to Fuji for Panasonic's foggy image quality and fair low night performance, I am also considering to buy Sony rx10 iii for taking video for daughter's sport competition, any advice please?
the optical quality of the two lenses is really good but the X-T2/100-400mm combo will give you better AF performance.
Mathieu Gasquet, Thank a lot!
Hi can you put into words, as to what I would gain using full format camera such as a Canon 5D Mk3, I am very critical about the sharpness of my photographs. regards, colin.
Would it be for wildlife photography mainly?
Hi yes both landscape and seascape mainly. Colin.
Which camera do you own right now?
Hi Mathieu, I use a OMD-EM1
Thanks for your review, I could be tempted to by this lens, but what camera do I purchase ???????
for wildlife I would suggest the OM-D E-M1 II.
Mathieu, thanks for your reply, but I have chosen the Lumix G8, price realy
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Thank you so much Mathieu for such a wonderful review. Phase detection AF, much better to follow subjectcs such as birds.
I have the Panasonic GX8 and suffer no shutter shock shooting handheld at 1/8th of a second whilst doing waterfalls..
the problem occurs more between 1/50s and 1/320s.
do you think the GX85 body would preform as good as the Gx8 with this lens?
+carmas54 yes, perhaps you could get slightly better AF performance. I find the GX85 (and G85) a little bit faster with moving subjects but they still struggle with difficult subjects such as BIF.
hi I'm using canon 7d mark ii and lens canon 100-400 mark 2 I would like to buy something light or panasonic GX8 lens and 100-400 is a good selection with a bird photography?
It's good but won't be as good as your Canon gear concerning the AF performance.
not sure you can get much better than that setup for birding bro.... why do you need lighter weight? just another curious photographer, and as Mathieu said, you wont get better AF performance, and honestly if you've already spent the money on that setup, bring it with you wherever you go, that is about as good as it gets, I personally want the best results I can get, I'll take the weight penalty any day, btw are you getting good results with the canon gear?
the GX8 vs E-M1 grip difference is not just E-M1 better grip, but as well a centered EVF as it supported correctly on eye, it will keep camera rotation axis around the lens Z axis instead on camera body left top corner like the corner EVF causes.
+paristo I agree. Despite all the recent cameras I've tried, I still consider the E-M1 to have the best design/ergonomics of all mirrorless cameras.
Actually 200-800mm view. ??
yes
do u recommend the 100-400 lense for athletic events?
+miren arrieta if it's outdoor yes it can be an excellent lens to use. But if you can get close to the athletes, there is also the 40-150mm 2.8 from Olympus. Which camera would you use?
would you use iss or lens stabilisation with olympus omd em1ii?
At 100mm the Olympus IBIS works well. At longer than that, the optical stabilisation should be more effective.
Mathieu Gasquet thanks!
Fantastic review. I've watched it like 4 times while waiting for my copy of this lens to show up. Hopefully only a few more days:)
+Seth GaleWyrick thanks! Let me know your impressions when it arrives!
+Seth GaleWyrick thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you are liking the lens. How the zoom ring feels?
+Mathieu Gasquet (MirrorLessons) It's decent. It gets a bit stiffer towards the long end. It's definitely not buttery smooth like the 40-150 f/2.8 but that's an internal zoom. It's not bad by any stretch. I'd say improved over your sample for sure.
Nice review. Can't wait to get my copy !!
Have you tried this lens on Panasonic G9! If so what is your experience of this combo as a wildlife photography kit? Thanks for the review!
Yes I did. It's a good combo for wildlife photography, the only limitation is birds in flight, especially when the bird is against a busy background: there, the DfD contrast AF system of the camera can struggle a lot. I haven't tested the very late firmware update to see if there are some improvements however.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Thanks for the reply.
Zoom ring problem is solved? Because I have a sample which is really unconfortable and hard to turn with also a noisy clicky iris. So I think the real situation of the entire model production.
I have used different samples of the lens while testing other cameras in the past couple of years, and non of them had a perfectly smooth ring.
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons so it's not a sample defect 😅
I used this lens for two years and optically it is a great piece of glass. But I did have problems with the zoom ring being way too stiff. I wonder if you or your other subscribers, have had a chance to use the newest Olympus 100-400 zoom and how the zoom ring resistance is different, better or whatever compared to the Leica designed Panasonic lens.
Thanks a lot for your very complete review.
It might lose overtime but I can't tell for sure.
