DIY Throw Bag Air Canon Launcher

- Here's my DIY Climbing Line Throw Bag Launcher Air Canon. It can be charged with a compressor or hand pump. I can launch a 10-12 oz. throw bag well over 100 ft in the air if it's fully charged at close to 150 psi of pressure. If greater height is required, I'm sure that using an 8 oz throw bag would launche another 20 - 30 ft higher.
Trying to keep my cannon as safe as possible, I chose to use pvc and galvanized piping. Sense the barrel doesn't pressurize, I just used 40 guage pvc piping.
Here's what you'll need to build your own air cannon throw bag launcher.
Barrel: 1-1/2" x 2ft pvc pipe
Barrel reducer: 1-1/2" pvc coupler
Barrel Reducer: 1-1/2" smooth pvc reducer to 1" female threaded
1" male to male threaded nipple (Quantity = 2)
1" brass ball valve
1" galvanized reducers to 1-1/2" (1" female thread to 1-1/2" male thread)
1-1/2" female thread to 2" female thread
2" x 12" threaded galvanized pipe
2" galvanized end pipe
threaded schrader tire valve
Just made one using Eric’s design. Parts cost right at $100 in Hawaii. Used it to get a rope over a mango branch 60’ up so we could shake them down. It worked great, 90psi got my throw bag there. We could only hand throw about 45’ so this was a necessity that really worked! I have a car battery pack with a built in tire pump (an Amazon special) which only takes around 30 seconds to charge the cylinder. Thank you Eric!!!!!

Nice design. While watching, I was thinking what's wrong with all PVC, it holds over 300psi. Then I heard your concern about dropping it and causing a potentially dangerous situation for all of those around you. Most of us pay extra for brand name climbing hardware to protect ourselves. Your well made point is a little bit more money to protect everyone. Well done! Another point: I'm new to climbing and just doing work on my own trees. I'm sure I'll eventually learn how to throw a line up in the tree, but for now, I suck at it. I don't have the time to get better and it's really frustrating. Your air cannon might just make my life easier. Thanks for the video and parts list.

It takes hundreds and hundreds of throws. I’ve been at it a year and still get frustrated. It’s just not worth my time (10-45 minutes).
I built mine with 4 inch pvc rated for 280 psig for the reservoir. It shoots a 12 oz bag 80 feet at 60 psig. I have shot it at 125 psi and it launched well over 125 foot.
i love your demeanor man. Ernest. You're not simple, but you made this simple for us. I don't know why I'm so intimidated by crafting, machining, industrial hands-on stuff, but this was very inviting indeed. I climb, I'm taking an hour or more (and multiple tries) to get the line in the tree. I feel exposed as well, (we climb trees in parks and such) and it would be nice to make 2 minutes of public ' what the f is that ' but generally get the job done swiftly!

Yeah, most commonly today, people are throwing a throw line up in the tree by hand, or a popular device called the BIG LAUNCH. This cannon has been super handy though.
Thank you!! I really didn’t want to spend $190. This is worth the effort to do myself. I’ll rig the valve on the side so it doesn’t get damaged being at the end.
Place under the handle when you store it leave the valve open and it will save it .. I learned the hard way 💯
You may find it helpful to spray some silicone lube spray down the barrel, shove a rolled up sock down to push the material to the bottom of the tube, then shoot the sock back out. It may save the day when all you might have is a hand pump to air up the cylinder. Less of wear and tear on the throw bag might occur as well.

Milwaukee has a m12 air inflator that would work perfectly for charging the chamber. digital readout so you can bump pressure up or down to get precise throws. all you need is a tri pod to steady the barrel and you're in biz.

I have found that the weaver bags are the only ones that fit 1 1/2" other brands at same weight smaller diameter, don't fly air runs right around them .

you didn't really need to use gas teflon tape but there was no harm in using it and there's no way you lost 30psi from checking with the gauge. you lost 2-3psi maybe
Ok throwing just takes practise, in time everything will work.

A butterfly valve opens much quicker than a ball valve. 2 paths of air and less resistance to turning. 👍
To stabilize and aim better, clamp the air chamber alongside a broomstick or similar, get down on one knee or sit down with the rear end of the pole against the ground.

NO. Manufacturers have all the equipment in the world to make butterfly valves to sell at HW store but they don't: 90-99% valves they make for home use are ball valves and plug valves. One of the many reasons is safety (Ball valve and plug valves are much safer than butterfly valves. Engineers don't recommend butterfly valves for pressurized air.
@@SSintoxplug valves are garbage. As a professional pipe fitter / service tech I do not recommend installing plug valves anywhere.

This is a race car wheel valve from Napa. I just drilled a hole in the cap and screwed the nut onto the schrader from the inside of the cap. Then, I screwed the cap onto the pipe. I hope that helps.
I watched some other guys with these. They say to put the string side with the ring, on the throw ball, into the barrel first. That way when the ball comes out the sting in trailing behind. With the string coming out first maybe it can pull the ball to one side or another. Have you tried both ways? Which one do you think is better? Nice build!
I've shot the lines both ways, but honestly, with the force that the canon shoots the bag/line, I've not noticed a difference. My biggest challenge is not over shooting, and keeping my hand stable when firing as the force tends to shake the canon. When shooting small crotches 100 ft high, it can be a challenge to keep the barrel aimed precisely.

You use 2 reducers. Ist 2" to 1-1/2" and then 2nd 1-1/2" to 1".
What different it will be if I use one reducer 2" to 1". Please advise.
Using a 2" to 1" reducer is fine. For our local options though, no one had a 2" to 1" in stock.

After using this for a while I found that I couldn’t control it as well as I would like to. If I had added a handle to it it would have worked fine. I recently purchased one of the air cannons from treestuff.com, and I use it quite a bit now. Another big upgrade was the fact that I bought a Makita 18 V compressor to fill the canon with instead of a hand pump.
That guy thinks he's so cool, the way he releases the air chuck, and catches it in his hand. I do the same thing. 😆

Where did you get your air nozzle at? I can’t find where to buy one with the appropriate threads to tap into the metal..
What did you use to seal the metal on metal threads? You had to use more then just plumbers tape, right?

I guess that question would really depend on where you live. However, as far as I know, there’s no legal issues with using this air cannon in the United States, at least. I use it all the time. Nobody’s ever said anything to me.

I made a PVC pipe rocket with the same philosophy,, and use a battery portable tire inflator.. guess what? The inflator has a maximum shutoff at 300 psi.... and the ROCKET always left the stand at around 250 psi.. and flew to about 130 feet.. if you look on the side of the PVC pipe,, it's maximum testing pressure is 700 to 800 psi.. hey, put a gauge into the galvanized side for immediate air pressure checking

Sorry to hear that. Honestly though, I really need to do an update to this video. I only used this thing for like, a month. Now I have given it away. It was way less handy for me, than I thought it would be. I’ve just gone back to using a big shot.
