With 16 tracks and the fact each of them can be any of 4 machines, it's kind of a bummer to me that the Digitone can't use any of those tracks as dedicated FX tracks. Having so many tracks all share the same reverb, delay, and chorus feels limiting. It felt more reasonable on the Digitone1 with just 4 tracks, but on Digitone2 it feels unbalanced. I would love the option to give up some audio tracks to use as route-able FX tracks in order to stack delays or use independent reverb settings on different sounds or something.
That’s a huge point also! And that would be a great option to be able to take a track as a dedicated fx track 🤩 Maybe they’ll add it at some point. Thanks for watching! 🙌
I have the Digitone 2 and the Digitakt 2. Aside from Overbridge that's STILL missing from Digitone 2 (should be a release day feature....) there's one thing, that i really don't like about the Digitone: I'm just completely unable to create good kicks on the Digitone 2. I'm talking about non-distorted, but still very, very hard, punchy kicks that cut through anything. Think Techno, Dubstep, hard bass music. It's probably a skill issue on my end.... But i can not, ever, get the kicks i want to have. They always sound weak and hit like a wet poolnoodle. For sound desing, basses especially, (metallic) Percs, etc it's perfect. Especially with the "randomize page" feature, that EZBot has shown in a video. That's what i use the Digitakt 2 for. And while that's a very good device too, i have to say that i don't really like using it that much. Reason is that Sample Management is absolute trash. It's incredibly annoying on PC too, in my opinion... But when you have to menu dive all the time to achieve things you do o PC with 3 klicks in 5 seconds, it becoems almost unbearable, lol. But luckily i'm a hybrid type of workflow person anyways. So once overbridge finally comes out, it'll be great creating in ableton but still having the hardware to sound design. :)
Thanks for your thoughts! I didn’t have a Digitakt 2 only the original one. But regarding the Kicks from the Digitone 2, i figured that the Kicks created by a comb filter are actually pretty sick! I did a video on that also 🙌 Thanks for watching again!
I’m obsessed with creating the perfect kick. No drum machine was ever enough until I finally got into modular for that purpose. The SSF ultra kick was my first module and it’s changed everything for me.
@ yeah the fun part is actually the learning one. FM synthesis is hard ok and the Elektron’s take on it complicates things even further but let me tell you… 💣
Getting good kicks out of digitone 2 is certainly doable, especially with layering. The thing with it is that it is so flexible that finding the sweet spots is difficult. I agree that right off the bat something like syntakt makes better kicks. The master distortion on DN2 helps a bit set to a very low setting. But DN2 just has a very neutral sound, kicks on DN1 were already a bit less cutting than syntakt and I feel like DN2 has an more subdued sound character which makes it even harder to get mix cutting kicks. One thing you can do is route one track of DN2 out via USB to process in an iPad or some hardware effect and then route back into the DN2.
Yeah finding the sweet spot is actually a thing, you’re right. But i find that with the comb filter and/or playing with a filters resonance you are absolutely able to create some punchy kicks. Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙌
Here's something I don't see much talk about: The original Digitone, Digitakt, and Syntakt were designed to work with and complement each other. Do you feel that this is still the case with all of the new additions on the Digitone II?
That's a really good point! With all the features the devices you mentioned have, it's easy to forget that they're not just meant to be standalone grooveboxes, but feel most comfortable when they can play along with their siblings. Thanks for the reminder! 🤩 And thanks for watching 🙌
track 12 is very good for non hat percs and filter pings. ping the filter and get heavy on the plocks and then run it thru the fx track while you lfo the delay. being able to lfo delay and verb parameters is the big stand out for me on syntakt. i wish fx parameters could be lfo'ed on digitakt 2 or dn2. i am running dt2 and st. syntakt sounds heavily 80s imo and digitone sounds 90s-2000s
Oh wow, i will definitely check that out! Haven’t really thought about a „misuse“ of track 12. Will try it out tomorrow that’s for sure! 🤩 Thanks for watching! 🙌
they can be modulated via midi, so you do have the option to get creative with midi loopback or each box sending midi lfos to each other. Not perfect, but you can get awesome results.
Great video, I feel the same way about most of these points but I think your comment about the analog cymbal track is a bit misleading. You still get a choice of 12 machines on the analog cymbal track including impulse and a noise generator and this track can also be a midi track, it's not fixed only to be an analog cymbal. Despite that, I agree with you that track 12 is still lacking and would be a lot better if we could assign more tonal machines to it
I know there are a lot of different cymbal machines on track 12.. but unfortunately only cymbals. And midi for sure. But overall i don’t like the cymbal sound of the Syntakt. BUT i promise, i will take some time to investigate and find a cymbal sound i do like. It must be possible! 😬 Thanks for watching! 🙌
The only thing the syntakt has over the digitone 2 is the FX block track, other than that the digitone 2 blows away the syntakt in terms of sequencer, filters, polyphony, sound design, and arpeggiation. Personally I'm sticking with the syntakt.
well, Syntakt has analogue machines, it is analogue/digital synth in which you can do a lot of what can be done on Digitone where DN will never be an analogue machine so in that sense, Syntakt is superior for those people whom want analogue sound and grit and be able to run digital side through analog chain.. Digitone is purely digital and will always be, but yes you could run Digitone through external analogue FX (such as analogue heat) to make it less harsh. However, you will not be able to produce analogue sounds.. so it always will be a matter of a debate. To me, it is stupid not to have a Syntakt and DN2 combined into one machine.
If you have a Rytm already, Syntakt might really have no job in your setup. Keep your Rytm and add a Digitone 2. You will be happy for a very long time 🤩
Really? Hmm.. maybe i will invest a little bit more time and try to come up with a decent hihat 🙌 But i hope they’ll give us the possibility to change it tho with a future update 🤩 Thanks for watching!
@@HightechLowlife-r8x Of course I know that you can't change or update analog components. But on the other analog tracks you can change the machines, I can't imagine that the analog part on track 12 is so different from the others. But that's just my opinion, I didn't build the device.
Nice comparison, thanks! 👍
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching! 🙌

@NOGASAYAN 🙂
Nice overview comparison of the two devices! If you were forced to keep only one of them, which would you keep and why?
That’s easy. I surely would keep the Digitone 2 because of its versatility and sound design capabilities 🤩 Thanks for watching! 🙌
Great breakdown
Thanks a lot! 🙌

I make all my kicks and rumbles on the DN2. It is actually a great machine for that

Yeah the fx block and the dedicated fx track is a huge point for me also. I think both devices combined together are a awesome combo 🤩🙌
I haven’t wrapped my head around the FX block yet.
Guess I need to watch some tutorials about it, and give it a go.

I prefer the drums on the ST. It’s a bit more limited but quicker and more jam/improv friendly too.
Great video. I'm thinking of selling my Syntakt and getting a Digitone 2. Love my Syntakt but I have a Rytm and think the digitone will offer more

I would choose op-z. And amount of money that i save i will spend on drugs…
I had an op-z before. wasn’t bent but a nightmare to program 😬
Do you expect the Syntax 2 in 2025?
It’s only been out for a couple of years
I can’t say.. I don’t think they will bring a new device so shortly after the original Syntakt. But really, i don’t know. Maybe they do, maybe not.
