I wish she had been MY OB! When I was pregnant, I vomited so much that I lost 20 lbs in my first trimester. I went to a practice that they rotate doctors, and kept getting the same super old guy. When I told him how even water made me vomit and I was afraid that the lack of calories was hurting my baby. He completely brushed me off, saying "it's fine...healthy babies were born in Concentration Camps during the Holocaust!" What the hell. This went on until midway through my 2nd trimester- I continued to lose weight and feel awful. I finally got their new, female doctor and she was horrified. She prescribed me nausea meds (none worked, but it felt so nice to be LISTENED to!) I was diagnosed with gravidarum hyperemesis, and the decision was eventually made to hospitalize me to feed me through an IV. I got an amazing daughter out of it though!
That was 9 years ago, and it makes me mad to this day, being treated as a whiny kid when I was legitimately so sick. Had this happened today, I would've gone elsewhere. But at 24, with my first pregnancy, it never occurred to me that I should.

I'm sure the pregnant persons partner feels even more powerless in that situation.
I'm sorry the doc treated you that way. It sounds like the whole office staff failed you. As an MA myself my Dr (the one I work for) would have gotten an ear full of my thoughts on the situation especially if I saw in the chart that amount of weightloss during pregnancy not to mention i can't imagine you looked healthy by any stretch if you couldn't even keep water down. True story, pregnancy is apparently an ER doctors first thought when they hear nausea. When I was 19 I was in a pretty bad car wreck (as a passenger), the car spun around three times before landing in a ditch and ramming backwards into a cliff wall (we were very fortunate, we came within centimeters of falling off the cliff on the other side of the road. It was a mountain road, to clear). The car was totaled and we were all shaken up pretty badly, I hit my head on the window and on the back of the seat pretty hard when the car finally impacted the cliff wall. I told all of this to me doctor in the ER after I had gone home and started experience symptoms of a concussion. I was too afraid to sleep so….I went to the ER. The doctor spent all of two seconds talking to me, didn’t actually examine me and concluded that I was pregnant. I old him that wasn’t possible and I was certain I had a concussion. I was there with my mom who could vouch for my story as she had seen the totaled car so I thought it was pretty clear that I wasn’t a drug seeker or totally ignorant. But this doctor kept insisting that I was pregnant and then disappeared for an hour. He eventually came back and did a brief physical exam to see if maybe it actually was a concussion after all! He didn’t give me a pregnancy test of any kind, he didn’t even ask if I’d take one. But I kept telling him it was literally not possible, I wasn’t sexually active. He finally said “yeeersh, it looks like you might have a concussion, but it’s not serious, you’re safe to go home and sleep.” I asked him what about the nausea, puking and spinning? He gave me some medication for it and said “don’t worry, these are perfectly safe for the baby”. I have few instances where I wanted to punch someone in the face more than in that moment.

When I was a freshman in highschool (15yrs old), I began to experience nausea and vomiting early in the morning every day, but would be fine later on until the next morning. The doc was thankfully intuitive and asked about the date of my last period and about my sexual activity. Basically, the only way I could have been pregnant was if I was the next Virgin Mary. They couldn't find the cause for my problems and sent me home with some advice on how to deal with it. For the next year, I ended up doing my own research and concluded that I had a hiatal hernia. I saw another doctor and told him why I believed it to be the case. After again confirming I wasn't pregnant, the doc humored me and filled out an order to get an endoscopy at the nearest hospital. To their surprise (and not mine), I was right. With a much better understanding of what their patient was dealing with, they were able to give very effective advice on how to mitigate my symptoms (surgery wasn't necessary since it wasn't life-threatening and only an inconvenience).

Those guys were as superb at OB/GYN emergency care. I would usually get a call with a great history, pertinent labs, their preliminary diagnosis all wrapped up with a bow - kudos and thanks to them.

Thank you! I'm not at the hospital you mentioned but definitely trolled the comments for how ridiculous this is for a representation of EM. I'm an EM doc and we get it... consultants hate to be called at stupid hours (or any hours sometimes) with questions that seem trivial. We don't want to call consultants and sound like we don't know anything... but sometimes we don't know that random factoid that is so specific to your specialty... that's why we are calling!
You need ACLS run like a pro or are on the literal verge of death needing fast and smooth intervention? That's our specialty = resuscitology.
I know this video is jest, but it really puts EM down and making it seem like we are "idiots of medicine" who can't do anything without someone else telling us what to do. The comments from people not in medicine very obviously show how little they know about the job in the ER... yes I am going to get a pregnancy test on any female of childbearing age regardless of orientation, gender identification or complaint. If there is a uterus, I need to make sure there is not a baby in it for SO many reasons. (Yes many docs can present this better... but point stands).
Anyway, longwinded statement to say thank you for standing up for EM docs.

Girl went into the hospital while I was there to give birth (my hubby just happened to know her boyfriend). She was there for what the doctor said was a massive abdominal intestinal hernia. They were ready to do emergency surgery, she was waiting in the labor and delivery area with us because they work better with female patients, and are always staffed. She was in pain every few minutes. They told us the symptoms, and I mentioned how it sounded like she was just pregnant, and having contractions. They both got a little nervous, but doctor knows best right?
They took me away to give birth, and I found out the next morning that she gave birth to a 8+ pound baby. The doctors never did a pregnancy test, they never did an ultrasound, they just assumed it was a massive hernia with no testing done.
Because I gave them a heads up and had the idea of a baby in their head, they weren't as surprised as the doctors. He thanked me by bringing McDonald's to my room for dinner. Which was great because the hospital forgot to bring me breakfast, lunch, and dinner. LoL

It's more likely them covering their butts & liability. They don't want to be accused of causing an abortion (unless it's legal there & that was intended) or birth defects. I was really nauseous and went to an er. Turns out i had to have surgery to remove my appendix. First there was a male nurse asking me stuff and a bit later he left and a female nurse came in and asked me when my last period was. Idk if it was bc the male nurse was embarrassed to ask or not 😂

"Not always good news" is so true. Even if there was no trauma that led to the pregnancy, some of us are (in medical terms) "habitual aborters" who really counted on birth control to prevent more miscarriages. You may have "done everything right" and get to suffer another miscarriage anyway.

I remember getting the call “how do I order a pregnancy test?” Granted it’s had been extremely rare to have a woman of child bearing age where I worked at the time, but I was one of only 2 people working in the whole place that did GYN (not even true OB) care. I would have to bring down supplies for exams from my office too until I created a cart and did lots of education 🤦🏻‍♀️

If I were in that situation and my doctor told me I was pregnant I would be overjoyed. I want kids. But my body had other ideas. I ended up in the ER for abdominal pain and vomiting several times before finally getting an accurate diagnosis, and I was tested for pregnancy every time because that was always the first possible solution to my problem.

My gall bladder was rotting inside my body for 3 years because "its just pregnancy pain"
But then when my OBGYN cleared me to have the surgery, the actual surgeon didn't want to because she was afraid of harming my 1 week old fetus (as determined by the actual pregnancy test)
Eventually I was permitted to do the surgery, and after i was told "If you didn't get this done, you probably would have died in like 3 days"
Yeah, I WAS pregnant for 3 years 😂 separate pregnancies, obviously 💁🏼‍♀️

This right here sounds about right which is scary by itself but what’s worse is when the nurses are the ones giving the “doctor” the information.
