A good paint job. When you do things yourself you know every little mistake/blemish you make but everyone else just sees the final result. Try not to point out your little mistakes to everyone and enjoy the perfect bits. You both made the job look easy. Looking forward to see how you adorn the the boat with striping etc. Well done.
I wanted to show you guys the imperfections because it’s helpful if painting your own boat. But I won’t show them to every passerby. Lol.
Once you do the top coat, you can also sand it with a 3200 grit sand paper followed by buffing it out for a mirror finish to blind your foes... I mean, fellow boaters with.
The sagging is because of putting it on too thick. If you thin the paint, you can put on more, thinner coats that dry faster. A little more effort but you get a much better finish. With the right prep work, the right techniques and enough patience, you can get airbrush level results with a roller or a sponge.
Your doing a great job. I've never repainted a boat, but I have restored several antique cars. Your never gonna get a super smooth finish unless you spray it. But in your case. You'll get a much thinker coat by rolling it. It looks great.
I live in the states and I fascinated by your canals. So by watching all kinds of videos somewhere I remember that if you change a boats name, you need to take it out of the water or it's bad luck.
Thanks. I watched a few car restoration videos before I started. It looks so fulfilling and addictive.
Cup of tea always makes things better.
Brilliant job, I have to say it's not as easy as it looks to get a good finish, there will always be a few spots that you notice but no one else will even spot them. I have just completed painting a stripe on my boat that the previous owner had done himself and left most the brush in it, it took days of hard work to sand, undercoat and top coat but we'll worth it, so hats off to you both for tackling a boat that size x
Hi there you two, excellent job by both of you great delegation of duties and Alice 🐈 would say purrrrrrrrfect. If you have never painted a boat before it looks very professional, can’t wait till part two and the new name! Kindest regards Martin 🍷🍷
Thank you
You should both be proud of the job you did. Most women would't even attempt such a thing. I make custom furniture so I complete understand how achieving an flawless finish is damn near impossible. Great job.
Thanks
Ladies, what a lot of work...I had to take a nap after just watching you. Well done!
lol, thanks for watching... even if we did make you fall asleep.
* Hello Ladies, fine job you're doing. Tip for windows, use Poly Butyl Tape ( it's like old fashioned window glazing, but flexible, used on vintage caravans for their windows and doors as well as on exterior corners. Super nice product, you won't be disappointed ! PS. all the pros do the 'sanding dance' it's a must ;)
Thanks. Yes that’s what Kath used.
You're doing great! Give yourselves credit! 😊
Did a good job for newbies! End product is pretty!
HI Girls , I once hand painted a car .On advice from and old mechanic was to put the tin of paint into a pan of hot water. The paint flows a lot better. I did this and was really pleased with the result. BOat looks great by the way , alot of work already put in, more than most .
VIXENS. What a stupendous job so far. Kath bottom shaking and Anna forgetting the other half of the gunnels, in favour of a cuppa tea, its all part of saving an ENORMOUS, HUMUNGOUS, amount of dosh. Bravery, gung-ho, and out and out, WE DID IT spirit, could not be more proud of my canal princesses..... 👏❤️
Yay. Thanks. Saving money and don’t forget more importantly- protecting the boat. X
Total respect to you both for tackling such a huge job, well done girls xx
Thanks
Girls you have done a wonderful job, it is not the most easiest task painting out doors, as good old mother nature always throws a speck or two, but well done both of you :) look forward to seeing the finished result
Thank you, kind of you to say
We've painted our own boat and its wearing well so far. Worst moment? We were moored up for the afternoon and decided to make the most of the warmth and undercoat the roof. It was all going so well when, suddenly, we were hit by a swarm of flying ants who proceeded to embed themselves in the fresh paint! Horrors! The beasties dried into the paint! More ants kept arriving so we disappeared inside to sob into a beer. Next morning we found that the second lot of ants had cannibalised the first lot so all we had left was a roof covered in ant legs like a hairy carpet! Did that take some sanding lol.
No! Just no! Oh my... I can't unread that.
It is looking impressive already! Can’t be easy working on the canal path and not in a boatyard. Good work both. Glad to see Kath appearing again. I was worried last week when there were a few singular references.
Kath was in charge of sanding and worked very very hard.
What a great job, you both have a great deal of energy. Ninety nine percent of us would never notice any wrong at all. We are all to hard on ourselves. Really enjoyed your video.
Ladies of many talents.....most impressive.
Regards Steve
Thanks
As a Do It Yourselfer myself I so appreciate the big job you undertook to paint your boat. Of course, only looking at it on camera, but it looks like you ladiies did an fabulous job. Kudos to you! And, remember you know every inch of that paint job....few others will know, or see any blemishes you might be aware of. Congratulations on how beautiful your boat looks now.
Ladies. It’s all about the fact that you have achieved this paint job yourselves. Anyone can pay someone else to do it. Well done and keep up the good work. Right, think I’ve finished this message. Must go and have a cup of tea now. 😉😂🤗
Thank you
yes 0 cup of tea - I feel the same - its a bit exhausting watching such endeavour isn't it?!
Hats off to you guys (gals)
I’m fairly DIY orientated but doing that would scare the bloody life out of me.
Can’t wait to see the finished results, you might even inspire me to tackle some of my paint touch up job
Mark & Debbie x
I’m really enjoying it.
Looks great.
Oh boy! Anna and Kath you have certainly done a magic job, far better than I would/could have done!
Morning NB's What a fabulous job you have both done. Your skills are absolutely spot on. Not surprised really, with two smashing supervisor.. 🐱🐱. The satisfaction of doing the job yourselves is going to be magical. 👍🏻💙💙🐶🐾
All down to those supervisors of course.
I like to think I am a practical type of guy and can turn my hand to most things. You ladies are just brilliant in your ability to apply your talents in such a positive way it would put most DIY'ers to shame. Sadly, the one thing that gives me a great deal of satisfaction is glossing doors and the finish must be perfect as I am my own worst critic, it would seem that you ladies are very much the same. Thinning paint will dull the high gloss, but the finish will be much kinder on the eyes with less shine. The boat is looking really good and take pride in what you have achieved. Well done to you both and keep up the good work.
I'm afraid you are right and I do love a spotless finish. However, on this my first attempt I did learn a lot. I hope to get better for the stern area which is still incomplete.
Well done ladies - great job and fab that you are doing it yourselves. Much more rewarding than giving it to someone else to do!
Yes, it is.
Thanks for this video- I’ve been wanting to repaint my boat since I got it but it seemed too big of a job and I’ve put it off. Seeing you guys do it and how transformative it is to the boat has motivated me! You did a really great job.
I hope it came across that it took several days per side and some planning. But really after you break it into chunks of tasks it is doable.
If I knew I was around the corner I would have offered help! Great meeting you both & David oh so briefly 😂
I’m in awww of you both, totally amazing. You should be very proud of yourselves. You commented how shiny our boat was when we saw you last, well look at yours 👍😁 xx
Thank you, that is so kind. We are happy that she is protected.
Looking good. I've just done mine although I was in a dry dock, doing it yourself is fun and puts your own mark on the Boat.
Congrats
What a big job and you took it on in a measured way. Very well done. Soon you will get over the "oh for that little spot"....and all you will see is what we see, a good job.
Thank you. The key was to be methodical- not my preferred mode of work but pretty much worked in this case.
"I am not a professional painter." said Anna, the talented water colorist. I am fortunate to have commissioned a portrait of my pooch, Evie. Brilliant. Posted by Kath, it arrived in Alaska as promised and in perfect condition. I recommend anyone with a dog or cat get in touch and do yourself a favor . . . perfect for Christmas! Just sayin . . . I highly recommend it. Ju,st shoot her an email with a photo of your beast . . . you won't regret it. Support fine art . . . and from her, it is fine art!
A good job, got a nice shine. Laying off with a new brush can be frustrating when a bristle comes out, & sticks.
Yes, only happened once though
A big thank you for pulling us in yesterday near the tunnel. By the way the blue looks great.
Beautiful job, ladies👍🏻💕Loving that blue!
It never rusts where it runs. Nice colour, great job, well done.
Great point. Love it.
Love the blue! Can't wait to see the finished project.
Looks fantastic! You ladies are amazing!
Thank you
Considering you did not have a shed to do this in, you did good. Even experienced painters can get a sag now and then. without using caustic strippers or sandblasting back to bare metal, no one could get a perfect finish over someone else's work.
Use masking tape to frame your coachlines and peal it off while the line is slightly tacky, by pulling at a 45 degree angle away from the line.
Thanks for the tip
Good job. I painted my old 1968 Morris Minor Trafalgar Blue. What a nightmare it was...Cheers from George and Jane
This was very interesting. Can’t wait to see the final result
Thanks x
All that sanding! You're doing an amazing job!
Great job girls, for a first try you did really well.
Thanks
Use the 4 ft rule...if it looks good from 4 ft then it’s good enough....the others we’ll see a new painted boat ( as someone else has already said) the first scratch will make you cry or growl at the one who did it.....it’s always the way.... good work all the same Amacf
Great rule, though someone already said there was a 10ft rule- so I'm going with that one. lol
Excellent painting technique ,I love the colour the boat looks extremely smart now, well done both of you
Beautiful, wonderful, an obvious labor of love.
What a gorgeous blue. The Alice pawprint only enhanced it. :) ... this is how you get a great paint job done, not skipping the details and prep work. :) ...,and having power tools!
Thank you. I see the value in the prep work.
That looks like a great job girls, it looks like a very professional paint job and you'll have saved yourselves a small fortune. The supervisor won't have charged much either, all the best Stevie
Wow proud to say well done to the both of you do u realize how much dosh you have saved by repainting your selves......again 👍👍👍
Great job Ladies.. Looking good look forward to part 2..🤗
Lovely shade of blue. Lovely shiny boat 👍 Will look forward to seeing the finished result and new name in a future vlog 😀
The blue is gorgeous! I think you’re both amazing to tackle such a big job and she’s looking fantastic. You’re both an inspiration x
It was a big job but we just went through really methodically
Obviously one can't complete a detail task like that without Supurrrrvision! Are you going to have an official naming ceremony? dont forget to give the boat a decent share of the pricey bottle of bubbly you toast with!! love the new colour! looking forward to part 2!
Wonderful job, Ladies! (and the blue-footed supervisor :) I am impressed with your sanding and painting skills!!
Oh yes the blue footed supervisor- I wish I'd thought of that.
Well done!
Looking good now and can’t wait to see what name you come up with!
Amazing job . Love what you're doing 😀
Great job Ladies
A great job, I wish I were as practical as you two
Nice to things are back to normal with Kath slaving away!
Wow! You are both such a inspiration to so many. We loved this vlog and look forward to watching part 2.
So kind of you to say bears. X
Can’t wait too see the finished project
You’re both amazing! Such hard work and it looks gorgeous. Can’t wait to see the next part! xx
It was hard work, but actually quite nice work.
As a fairly recent subscriber to TNE I had often wondered what happened to Ewart. TBH, it never occurred to me to consider a repaint job - doh !! Great job ladies - if I ever get to buy my own boat, I'll give you a call ..... !!
Welcome aboard. Yes we painted her. However then we sold her and now we have Lazy Days.
@@TheNarrowboatExperience Sorry my mistake - still catching up with your back catalogue !! 😎
If you try, you cannot fail. It’s looks like a new boat. Job well done.
Wonderful work and well done!
Well done. It's a big undertaking.
It's starting to look lovely, its a lovely colour.
Thank you
Brilliant job,love it xx
Great job! Looks really beautiful! 💖
Thank you
Maybe a little late but I would use blue automotive masking tape for any lines in your finish less clean up than the paper tape :)
I used the budget stuff from B and Q, it is blue, I'm not sure if it's the same thing.
Looking great!
I think you're making a fantastic job of the repainting, really looking forward to seeing her finished...not as much as you I bet, what a lot of work, but take pride in it, looks awesome in the new colours already 😃
I am looking forward to it finishing. But I have really enjoyed it.
Looks good. Its a rich color. Can't wait for the new name christening 😁
Thank you. We are really happy with the colour.
Great job keep up the good work both 🤗👍🏻
Cracking job so far 👍 keep up the good work 😊
Thanks
Looks like a good job 👍
Looking good ladies, it's impressive. Take my hat off to you both. Interested what the end result will look like, although I'm sure it will be fabulous.
I love the blue!
i used to hand paint my cars last coat i always warmed the paint and finished with horizontal strokes and found any brush lines just blended nicely in fact one guy said about one car who sprayed it for you lol, just might be an idea to try it out , vertical 1st then horizontal ,but i never used roller
great job ladies keep up the good work
Thanks
Nice colour with the window frames!
Lovely, when you lay off use a wet brush maybe a bigger one. I normally lay off upwards also when rolling on be quicker rolling sideways as well as up and down. When sanding make sure to keep changing paper. Apart from that girls your doing a good job. Also put a bit of white spirit in the last coat, also never paint from the tin use a paint kettle.
So many tips- thank you.
Great job girls, looking good.
That looks really good ladies. Going to be hard waiting for part 2 and see what the finished boat looks like. Did I miss what you are going to rename her? Name it after the cats "The Alice and Munchy." =) You ladies are so multi-talented it is amazing to watch your videos. I wish I could do some of the things you two do. Good luck to you both with the painting and everything else you do. Definitely deserves and gets a thumbs up. 👍🏻
Thank you for your kind comment. We do like to give things a go and would have liked a sleeker finish but are really happy to have protected her for many many years to come.
You have done a brilliant job and you have not done it in a dry dock and for a first time well done I had a boat done it cost me £5000 and I had to live in a hotel for a month
Thanks so much. I was happy to keep the boat protected and for that I think it was a good job.
I look forward to seeing the next step. We are always are own worst critics , against ones personal work. Your doing great! That's a large area to cover!
Look forward to the new name.
Very essential Anna, very essential.
it looks great :)
While of course a lot of the flaws are something only you will see - I know from experience that you will ALWAYS see just that so don't feel bad about redoing those bits. You've both done a brilliant job.
Thanks. She looks best in low light, so I just go out and look at her at dusk. lol
looking good
WELL DONE GIRLS !! You are doing alright
What a fantastic video, all the info I need. Thank you. Subb’d and enjoying the back catalogue of videos
Impressive!!
Looks great, you may have done this but if you need to do another 'paint join', ensure to do a Feathered Edge as this will stop it from showing up as much.
What does a feathered edge mean?
It just means that you use the last bit of paint to fade out the paint (just keep going until your brush is empty). Then go back over this area when you come back with fresh paint so that join is not visible. It's best to do another feathered edge going back over the last bit of paint to ensure that any slight difference is not noticeable. Good luck
Dan
Looking good as always girls.
good job ladies perfection is not in this world but still keep trying here in quebec canada temp is rising up about time to
Thank you 10/10
That should work fine most of the boat builders use it for line when painting the water line on their crafts you might have to use a string line too as a guide helps you keep to the line. 😀
