    Cleared out a decorative outhouse the other day... Massive africanized colony... my sister was going to just document it since it was her property, but ended up jumping in to help... had a full suit for her, of course. it was her first time dealing with bees. Luckily her suit was good... mine was a new ventilated suit... took 19 stings through it...luckily I've built up an immunity at this point so, aside from the pain from getting stung, I barely have a reaction. There were easily 70.000 to 100,000 bees in this thing...

      Thanks. How is the flow in TN? Down here it is horrible. The three week freeze in the early spring killed all of the nectar bearing plants.

      It has been ok. Going from what the older beekeepers around the club say. On the family farm we have had asters, privet, wild roses, cowitch, blackberry, right now clovers. I plant an acre of buckwheat for when the dearth hits here.

      @@BugFarmerBees I'm in western Virginia and the flow is fairly strong as some boxes are getting plugged with nectar. Some hives have at least one super of honey, some have 2-3 supers on top of a double deep. I just built nine more supers and the plastic frames are drawn out in about a week. Its getting dry here but the bees are making that liquid gold with an outstanding flavor.

    I love hearing a pipping queen. I'd like to think she is saying in the most warrior tone "Fight me and I will end you!" 😁
    Love your videos and I look forward to your season progression.

    Bug, I bought some number tags made of plastic and engraved for a few dollars from AMz and secured them with a #6 screw. These round tags are affordable and look nice. I had a lot of queen failures this spring, sometimes she is just gone from the box after several weeks.

    • @BugFarmerBees

      Just wait until next week. These queens are quite possibly the worst queens I have ever bought.

    A sure way to tell if you have a truly ITALIAN QUEEN, is get real close and smell her breath……if you get a strong aroma of Oregano, Thyme AND Garlic,….. Yep she’s a PURE ITALIAN!!! AND OH, IF SHE ALSO HAS A FIRERY TEMPER AT TIMES!

    Glad to see the new apiary getting up and running. I'm interested to see how you scale up your harvest, and whether you go into wax/propolis/pollen/venom sales too

      There will be no harvest from this bee yard this season. These girls are using every bit of nectar they bring in to build out their hives. Hopefully next year we will have a great harvest.

    Wonderful venture. Very nice that Bee Castle has Sponsored the equipment. Just wondering, since I haven't seen evidence of electric fencing, do you not have concerns with bears in your neck of the woods? Could prove devastating if one were to come around. 😞

    Wasn't that a queen cells on the bottom of the second frame of the second hive you went in

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  Год назад

      Those frsmes all came from the other apiary and contained a lot of chewed out cells and katywampus comb off the bottoms. All viable queen cells were destroyed prior to inserting a new queen. That said, it's been 3 weeks since I filmed that video and in most cases I wish I would have kept the queen cells and dispatched the queens. All will become clear next week.

    I thought I saw a couple of queen cells/cups starting from 5:10 in the second hive you gave a queen.
    And did you destroy those three queen cells of just cut them out to use elsewhere?

    I recommend that when installing new Queens you Mark them first. Breeders usually Mark them for you sometimes they charge for it but if the Queen is marked then you know that is the queen in your hive problem with you I suspect a Virgin Queen killed your bought Queen because this happens so many times It Looked to me like Queen cells along some of the frames you didn't spot you look again I think you will see that in some you missed. The Queen's you killed would have just been about to start laying a few days and you would have seen eggs. I only sell numbered Queens so that I can't get accused of selling Virgin Queens.

    I have a crazy question? What shirt are you wearing in this video? And do the bees sting you through that shirt?

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  Год назад

      Why it's a Bug Farmer shirt :-). It is a long sleeve Tee from GILDAN. Yes they can sting through it but it rarely happens. Bees ten to go for the eyes, hands, or any exposed skin.
