Thank for sharing the picture of my XL frame. The brood pattern on these frames are amazing. I only have two hives and a 5-frame nuc box, but I'm building 20 more frames for the future.
That was a solid attempt at pronouncing my name and you pretty much nailed it on the first attempt! Also, I only record to RUclips to keep a log of how my hive is doing, so feel free to use whatever you like. Sorry you are having issues with those pests. We don’t have quite as many of those where I live for now. I don’t think I could keep up with as many hives as you have. Thanks again for the great content! Mark

I’m so glad you liked it! You’re one of my favorite channels! Nothing like putting my feet up with a cold glass of Vernors Gingerale and watching your bee hive adventures! How often do you have issues with the moths? 🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸
Thinking you’ve done well, glad you caught it before you completely lost this hive. Thanks Mr Bug Farmer 👩🌾 we like your adventures and information, it’s very helpful. People don’t always share what goes wrong, it it is good to then know what to do in a particular situation. Hope it all turns out well for your bees 🐝. 🇦🇺👍🐝🍯
Thanks Trevor. I like to show the good and the bad. No one is perfect and knows everything, especially not me. Thanks again for stopping in. I appreciate you.
@@BugFarmerBees all good really enjoy your channel. I just put up my latest video on my RUclips channel, also with small hive beetle larvae it’s not nice. Hopefully I got them all out. Thanks again 👍🐝🍯
Thankfully you caught it when you did! Had it been a week later, it probably wouldn’t have been recoverable. I think more bees along with a little food will go a long way!
Don, do you prefer bees over capped brood? I was thinking he should have left the hive in place till evening to recover foragers, move them after dark, and before going to work , check the pop density. I would have put them in a nuc with two frames of capped brood sandwich between two frames of resources, one frame of empty comb and a week later a super on top. This way, there is no room invasion and the hive doesn't have to spend resources moving back on deep frames before winter.
Hive Beetle Larvae is the issue here much more so than wax moths.... boost up your numbers and get oil traps on there.... numbers are way too low for the room they have....
Thanks for sharing the experience. I too, had a NUC get slimed this week by SHB larvae…put the frames in a tub of Dawn dish soap and water to clean them up and then put in the freezer in an attempt to re-use. Love seeing the results on your bee barns. Wishing you a continued success.
@@BugFarmerBees Tinny larvae is SHB. The moth pupae is 2.5x larger and you'll see tunnels going through your comb, holes in your frame, and sometimes in the boxes.
@@ZelmaBees Hi Ms. Zelma. The guy from Barnyard Bees also suggested leaving the frames outside in the open for the winter. Made sense considering SHB and moths don't like light or the elements. Saving those frames will make life so easier for new colonies and net at least 60lbs of honey that would otherwise be spent building comb.
Hey, about the peppermints, as I saw someone mention in a comment: I've been running them as a test due to a beekeeper's (me!) mistake in not whacking down (in a timely manner) weeds and grass that were getting far too overgrown and allowing the SHB to climb into hives. I can say that some of the comb (but not all the frames, and not in every hive, and not even in the same hive in all cases ) smelled slightly of peppermint. The honey, though, didn't smell or taste like anything but honey, both capped and uncapped. In at least one colony, the bees ate the candies in just a couple of days and needed to be reloaded. I pulled a couple of frames that had that slight minty smell, and after being out just for a hour or so made that very subtle smell go away. Based on my - of course, small, anecdotal, YMMV - observation on the use of those mints, SHB counts are well down, with no real effect on combs or honey. I'm also using beetle blaster traps as well, with just canola oil and apple cider vinegar. Might be worth an experiment there in your yard. I have 30 hives and tested with mints on 10 colonies; I used a good mix of really strong, average, and smaller colonies, just to have a good sample. I'm now rolling the mints out to all the hives, although I have to say working with those in the 100+F days we're having has been...interesting. And sticky. Very, very sticky. LOL Good save on your small colony. Others have already suggested to add some brood frames, and I agree, although I would also shake some extra bees in as well, preferably from a couple of different hives, to confuse the pheromones and try to keep most of them there in the smaller hive, but also to lessen the chances of those new bees balling up the queen in that small colony. Good luck with them no matter what route you go. Be(e) well!
That is good to hear about the peppermint. I have been sitting back waiting for the results from the early adopters to see how it all panned out. I will be adding more bees to the teal hive as soon as this heat breaks and I can get into the hives. Probably tomorrow. Thanks for stopping in and thanks for the information on the mints. I have a different solution I will be proposing in an upcoming video as an alternative. Thanks as always for stopping in. Take care.
@@BugFarmerBees I'm willing to try anything short of dancing around naked with the bees to get rid of pests. One of my strongest hives had the highest beetle count when I stripped the honey off. I feel your pain. I too have lost a hive or 2 to hive beetles. I think your doing the right thing changing the board board and taking the deep brood box away. As i watched your video there were more hive beetles in the top box that you couldn't see but the camera picked up. I like the idea that TK Bees - Laura Sanders had about adding a brood frame or 2 to help them control the pest in hive.
I’m not sure if you want to try it, but I heard that peppermint candy (the little red and white round candy) can help keep SHB out of a hive. There are some beekeeping vids about it. Might be something to try. Anyway I hope the teal hive makes it. 🙂
I have heard that from many people and several other beekeepers on RUclips do it but my concern is that the peppermint is a sweet candy that the bees will eat and it will eventually end up in the honey. The last thing I want is peppermint honey. I think the teal hive will make it but it will take a little work to get her over the finish line. Hey I mentioned your heating system to another beekeeper and they swear that the honeybees will consume more stores and honey can you put up a video again showing what you found at the end of winter with the hives that we’re heated thanks
I have run hive heaters for 5 seasons and I can guarantee the bees use only a third of the resources that an unheated hive uses during winter. The bees have no need to consume their resources to generate heat for the hive. Bees will not sit around and munch when they are bored like humans, their only thought is to conserve resources for the colony. I have several videos where I do heater checks and the bees can bee seen through the observation windows seemingly wash-boarding inside the hive and waiting for spring. Thanks for sharing my channel with your friends, I really appreciate it. Take care.
Jim at Vino put it best in one of his videos. He said the bees use honey like fire wood. They use the calories they get from honey to heat the hive. If they don’t need to heat the hive, they don’t need to consume honey.
