    The Kia Niro EV is vanilla. There are no flashy details on the outside, and just plain old practicality living on the inside. Still, with 239 miles of driving range, this electric car is likely to draw attention from EV enthusiasts. But how well does 239 miles translate to real-world driving convenience?
    The answer, unfortunately, turns out to be “not too well.” During his week with the Niro EV, Cliff Atiyeh ran within a few percentage points shy of running out of juice. Certainly, New England’s frigid weather didn’t help, and Cliff was also disappointed with the local infrastructure’s ability to recharge his test car. On the bright side, the Niro EV’s 201 horsepower and 291 pound-feet or torque did make for an enjoyable drive, but the car’s skinny tires and over-eager traction control meant that Cliff wasn’t able to put any of that power to its full use.
    Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard on the Niro EV, and Kia’s UVO Connected Services offers a few nifty tricks, like the ability to send maintenance alerts to your smartphone. There’s 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, which expands to 53 cubes when you fold down the rear seat. In terms of safety, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have reviewed the Niro EV. However, the Niro Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid both received a Top Safety Pick+ designation by the IIHS.
    Pricing on the Niro EV hasn’t been announced, but the mechanically identical Hyundai Kona EV costs $36,450. Federal tax credits can lower the price you’ll ultimately pay for a Niro EV, assuming you live in one of the twelve states where the car will be sold: California, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.

    Why bother doing a EV video if you're going to tell people to burn gas, don't care that there is a cost difference I'm aware of that, I want to compare it to other EVs not to a gas burner.

    I just test drove this car. I love Sport mode! I would pick this before Tesla. Tesla insurance rates is crazy high + this car has much more space.

    I have a 2018 Kia Niro hybrid and it's fantastic. Yes the design is not the best and yes it looks outdated already, but I'm getting 51+MPG all the time. That makes up for all the short comings. Plus there is no range anxiety with going across the country.

    Your statement that the Niro Hybrid is a better buy is untrue in cases where one can take full advantage of the available incentives: In CA, here is what you get: 7.5K federal tax credit, 2.5K state rebate, plus local incentives (clean air districts, utility provider), all totaling from 10-11.5K off the price. Throw in the cost saving versus a hybrid over a 5-10 year lifetime and you have another 3-5K. This is all before the value of utilizing clean energy over fossil fuels which you don't even mention at all! If you believe in science, we have 12 years to turn things around, or we're all f*cked.

    When considering an EV I focus on range and reliability, not whoo-whoo styling. Anyway, the latter is always in the eye of the beholder.

      You're right... Range, recharge speed and time are primarily important for electric vehicle buyers. Car guru should add that to their reviews of electric cars.

    I has a gas 2013 Soul and loved it. When there is a Tesla Standard range for $39,900 with Autopilot with 0-60 in 5.3 Seconds I think this maybe over priced by about $10k. But I do love that they have it out there now. If you need the crossover room now that does give it more value.

      This got 6.1s 0-60 at a drag track near me, ex model, which is faster than a racing modified Ferrari Dino, Lamborghini 350GT, Lamborghini Countach, and basically any Ferrari 308.
      6 seconds is still really amazing when you realize you're driving an SUV.
      Like the gas equivalent Ford Escape 2019 gets like a 9.5s

    it's a start, but prices need to drop to $30K with this kind of range BEFORE federal tax credits on new EVs to be really affordable for a middle class family to make that switch.

      It took only 5 years, but in the used market the Niro's and 2022 Chevy Bolts are now in the 15K to 20K range, great time to be a buyer for an EV (finally)

    Kia states a charge rate up to 100kW but it actually tops out at 77kW and you only get that for a few minutes. And only then if you start a charge at less than 10% state of charge, with a hit battery pack in summer. In winter 38-43kW is about the most you’ll get.

    Inevitably there will be complaints about the initial limited allocation of the Korean EV's. But the demand for EV's in the US is still a tiny fraction of that for gasoline powered vehicles and it varies significantly by region. The problem of meeting demand is amplified by the ongoing tight supply of extended range batteries. Given those conditions KIA (and Hyundai) would obviously prefer to provide more adequate supply of vehicles in states where demand is highest rather than run the risk of unsold vehicles in states where demand is less. When battery availability improves, KIA will almost certainly expand the distribution of its extended range vehicles.

      Its not just demand persey, but dealer infrastructure to support and service KIA EV's. Dealers need to make upwards of $200K-$500K in an EV "clean room" and special EV electronic diagnostics in their service department, as well as train a half-dozen staff on servicing the vehicles safely, so you don't end up with a battery melt fire in your service garage.

    I like that it looks semi normal inside and out, and plenty of second row room. This will be a hit and Kia needs more of these, not Stingers or K900s. Basic electric at its best.

      Different strokes for different folks, Paul. KIA and Hyundai are demonstrating a greater commitment to pure EV models than virtually any other major manufacturer (Tesla, of course, excepted.) And vehicles like the Stinger and K900 play an important role in elevating KIA's overall brand image, even among customers who opt for less expensive models.

    Those tires are useless even on dry pavement but to get that advertised total range number that's why you have those LRR tires.

    Seems Kia Niro EV will come to my state , but I would have preferred to get Hyundai Kona Electric with its 19 more EPA miles (258 vs 239).. so maybe I wont have a choice (unless I drive out-of-state to get it)... so likely I'll get this Niro EV.

      A number of reviewers have already noted that in real world numbers the Niro has actually edged out the Kona in some tests. I much prefer the looks of this over all of the plastic on the Kona.

      You will save 4000.00 us dollars because you do not buy gas antifreeze or oil. Maintenance cost 75 percent less because you run on electric power only. The battery runs on 274 miles per charge. If you're in a mild temperature area your range could be as good as 300!!

    Why are you pushing a car that can not be bought in the USA? And why trash the best EV on the market for the price. Did you hear what I said;? You can't buy this car in the USA because we live in Oil country. The powers that be have convinced Kia car dealerships to shot themselves in the foot by suppressing their own EV sales. What a damn shame.
