Any tips for coming up with your own designs?

But some of my tips are to be flexible with the chunk of wood you have. Sometimes you have to attempt to position the figure in the wood beforehand and sketch the 2D image on the block itself so you have an idea for proportions. Also, I will use references via pictures or other figures to see how certain proportions are suppose to look.
