- Greece's victory in Euro 2004 is widely considered the greatest underdog story in the history of the Euros. This unlikely side played hosts Portugal twice, eventually defeating them in a dramatic final. What few remembers is the scorer and that game, and Greece's leading scorer for the tournament was then Werder Bremen and former Aris striker Angelos Charisteas. We sat down with Greece's unlikely hero to learn about his career, and the incredible weeks of Euro 2004.

After years of British media’s jealousy marginalizing what Greece did, English speaking outlets are finally covering Greece’s Euro 2004 run with the praise and accolades it deserves. Thank you Copa 90
Fuck the media man, the people loved the underdog story 🏴🇬🇷
@Fabian Deasy there’s no narrative, ask any Greek person, we lived it, we didn’t see that “love” from England for years mate
And now, it's coming Rome. 😂
One of the most beautiful moment in football, anything can happen in this game
That's we all love this beautiful game!
Denmark 92 as well ❤️
As a portuguese of course i was appalled by that defeat in our own homeground. But i must admit that Greece deserved that glorious triumph. They knew they were not the best team in the tournament and they played with heart and lots of discipline. Our manager, Scolari, buried us, he lost twice to Greece and Otto Rehagel was way superior in his tactics. Congratulations to Greece for such an achievement: being crowned kings of Europe in 2004.

The most traumatic loss football ever gave me was the Euro 2004 final. As an 8 year old Greece made me cry my eyes out, like the world was ending. But in hindsight Greece deserved the victory because they were strong and tactically superior and after 2016 (when Portugal won the Euro) catharsis came and I got over the loss, finally

Well done Greece, congratulations from Portugal.
I was on the final and I can tell you, all Greeks being in Lisboa these days have reserved a big place on our hearts for the Portuguese people. We enjoyed and loved your hospitality, we respected and still respect your big footballers (I went with 4 Greeks from Germany and 2 of them wore always a tricot from Luis Figo!). Love, gratitude and blessings from Greece - Portugal ole - PORTUGAL OLE!!
Greece winning the Euro. Leicester winning the Premier League and FA Cup. Portugal winning the Euro. Lille winning Ligue 1. These are the stories that people love in football. The stories of teams facing much stronger opponents and coming on top, to become legends. We don't want shit like the European Superleague or whatever American thought system they want to introduce to "increase the big matches". Fuck that, we want the underdog stories.

2004 was the same year that FC Porto won the UCL in a final against AS Monaco.
And Werder Bremen won the German double after failing to qualify for the UEFA-Cup against FC Pasching, losing 0:4 at the UI-Cup semi-finals.
Oh, and Arsenal winning the Prem without losing a single match!

I spent my early childhood (6 years old - 16 years old) by watching the Greek national team in empty stadiums and having a dream to play one day with Greece in a Euros and World Cups and make a huge upset and win it as underdogs... I may never played in our national team but the dream became reality in 2004 when I was 18... Then the empty stadiums were filled by Greeks that they lived the dream I had as a child... God bless everyone in this team and the feelings the gave us. Greatest underdogs in history or football...
From Mexico, Angelos Charisteas is my top Idol in football ever!!!!

I remember in my school (Portugal) a Greek exchange student doing a presentation on her country. When she gets to the "National Heroes" she puts Charisteas, and (genuinely innocently) asks if we know him. Queue a classroom of stone-faced people just stare her down.
The dude looks like a genuinely nice person, and I thought his assessment of Portugal as a nervous team during that Euro to be interesting.
It's still too soon for us to be able to feel sympathy for their achievement, though :P
I am Portuguese and since 2016 that I love the fact that Greece won that Euro's edition.
My friend, Portuguese football brings out everynow and then great players and teams. You will have so many opportunities to win trophys in the future as you already have in National level and in Clubs level . Porto , Benfica, Sporting will take again Champions league , Europa league etc. But for a country like Greece that was once in a lifetime opportunity. So , if that explain it better for you i think it is time to feel sympathy for our achievement . It was a great football fairy tale but it was true and Portugal was a part of it . The friendly, good hearted , warm and very hospitable Portugal that despite the bitterness of the loss was a really kind place for the Greeks that we were in the tournament of 2004 . Greetings from Athens .

I knew a guy from Portugal back in the day. I met him outside Da Luz and we exchange our scarfs and phone numbers. Before the final. After the match, 1-2 weeks he called me and told me that he will come to Athens for the Olympics. We met one day and he told me that the whole country was in a huge shock for many days and no one could believe how their golden generation lost the cup loosing two times from Greece. I told him that winning this cup will forever be a huge milestone for Greece. Only in 1987's Eurobasket's win, the country felt so extremely proud of an achievement. Maybe the Portuguese people hate us now -i told him- but for all Greek people till this day, Portugal will forever be the good antagonist in our fairytale. Last thing. I will forever remember what i felt listening 45000 Portuguese chanting their national anthem. It was a blast! Till today when i hear Portugal's anthem i get a little emotional. And yes, i was with Portugal in 2016 final and i was very happy that you won the same way we did! Love from Greece!!

I remember that fairytale story like it was yesterday. Stunning once in a lifetime victory. Some bitter people still can't get over it but deal with it - Greece won fair and square against all odds.
@Darwinek
Who's bitter about it?
Can't be Portugal surely, they lost to Greece in the group stage never looked like winning.
That's the only reason Greece qualified from the group and then Portugal were beaten again by Greece in the final and again Portugal the hosts never looked like winning.
I do believe England and possibly others such as Italy would've knocked out Greece had they faced them in that tournament but that doesn't change the fact that Greece were worthy winners. I just feel Portugal can't be bitter about that tournament as they should feel the most responsible for making Greece Euro's champions other than Greece themselves.
@@cddb5408 Greece beat apart Portugal, the defending champions France and the best team in Europe that time, Czech Republic. And we had a tie with Spain. What makes you think that England, or italy, or the Netherlands could come with something better? Greece was the beast TEAM in that competion. Not the one with the most famous players, not the most fun to watch, not the team with players in the big leagues.. Greece was the most commited TEAM with all players and coaches focused to their purpose. Its unfair if anyone says that Greece was not a worthy champion. Especially hearing that from English newspapers and ''football experts'', that never won nothing except the WC they've hosted back in '68.. and it was a controversial one to be fair..
@@Stargazer1974 You obviously can't read.
I clearly said Greece were worthy winners.
And it was 1966 England won world cup not 68.
England also won Tournoi de France 1997 vs France Italy & Brazil.
England were very good in the 1990's.
Also had very good Euro's last year. Did as well as any finalist in a major has ever done similar to Euro96 which they only lost in the virtual final vs Germany.
@@Stargazer1974 on pens, both tournaments.
And many tournaments in general only lost on pens with a lot of adversity and bad decisions against them or playing ages with numerical disadvantage, disallowed goals, opposition escaping clear reds etc...

as a diehard fan of the rival team he played, I love him for his goals in 2004. thank you for this documentary, we (Greeks) are crying watching it :)
He was a good player in the Bundesliga and.
Greece was an underdog and they don't have to apologize how they won the cup. They won fair and with a tactic that fits them best.
By they way - German Media called the trainer (Otto Rehhagel) after the triumph Rehhakles. A legendary trainer with a lot of philosophical quotes.
Interesting insight from the man and Country that Haunted Portugal for 12 long Years. I as a Portuguese have to say that i didnt think we wore going to win beside reaching the final and winning against From France cuz the the odds and i do think yes Portugal was lucky and i forgot the Fernando Santos was the Coach for Greece before Joining Portugal
You know Greeks love Portugal. We totally support your country (and not because we beat you, we genuinely like Portuguese people)...
I believe historically you had unbelievable players. I consider you equals to the 5 major teams of Europe.
That Portuguese team was the best I ve seen in my lifetime. I am 27. And I include the on e that won the Euros in that list.
You have nothing to be ashamed of. The greatness of that squad made us even more proud.
That goes for the Czechs too. Thank God Nedved got injured.
Main fact about charisteas is that he had this career without a proper ball control because nobody taught him that in his early days before signing for aris.Another fact was that when he moved to Germany he was a skinny kid and there within 2 years he gain a lot of muscles. As for that rivalry within the national team the player who left after that match with Finland was georgatos vieri's favorite teammate in inter back then.He s great as person and we thank him for his contribution in our society.
Even if this is a video about Angelos, he mentions his teamates at every chance he gets. That spirit made that team win that trophy.
Thank you Angelos!! The happiest moment of my life was the goal in the final!!!

This was a far bigger shock than Denmark winning euro 92
Yes, Denmark was actually a very good side and didn't make the tournament originally just because only the group winners did. Greece in the other hand never had even scored a goal in a major tournament.
@@HockeyJokerit We scored a goal VS Chech and Slovakian Republic(1-2 for the other side) and we finished the tournament of EURO 1980 with 1 point(0-0 VS Netherlands). But I will remember the tournament of EURO until the end of my life.
@trancemadmaz
Yeah for 3 reasons.
(1)
16 team format was harder than the format Denmark won with only 8 teams.
(2)
They played vs Portugal in Portugal
(3)
They had already beaten Portugal in the group stage and people thought maybe that was a 1 off and Portugal are the better team so they'll get it right next time. But they didn't, Greece won again and again it wasn't a lucky win Portugal just couldn't play and were never in front in either game. A fully deserved title but I can't help think if a better team were in the final than Portugal then Greece wouldn't have ever been allowed to win this format which is the hardest Euro's format there ever was. They needed the group stage win vs Portugal just to reach the knockout stage. They only scraped 1 point in the next 2 group games because they were 1of the weakest teams on paper in the competition.
@@cddb5408 Also the players. Denmark had world class talent from the likes of Peter Schmeichel and Brian Laudrup where as Greece had the likes of Theo Zakarakis and Angelos Charisteas who were good players but not in the same league as those guys. The Danish team of 92 would probably beat the Greek side of 04 by a score of 2 or 3-0. In fact I'd say the Danish team of 92 was as strong as the Portugal team of 2016
@@HockeyJokerit Also only 1 pt separated Denmark and Yugoslavia in the qualifying group. Yugoslavia player for player were arguably the best international team in World football at the time when you take into account the success of Red Star Belgrade winning the European Cup in 91 and the several number of players that went on to become huge stars in Serie A. The Danes beat Yugoslavia 2-1 in Belgrade and Yugoslavia beat Denmark 2-0 in Copenhagen. It was very close
I know am not the only one but on July 4th 2004 I received the best birthday present ever.

great video but, please come back with the derby days 🥺, and can you maybe do a derby days on brazil when the public come back? there is a lot of superclassicos here, like gre-nal or the paulista derby.
Gigantas!
A story of a skilled but second class striker playing at a non top club, who becomes the hero of a tournament leading his national team all the way to the trophy:
1982 Paolo Rossi (AS Perugia) winning WC with Italy in Spain.
2004 Angelos Charisteas (Werder Bremen) winning EC with Greece in Portugal.
Two very similar stories: Both players faded our afterwards and didn't ever since reach even near performance to that of their "perfect" tournament. Also both were considered second choice (no starters) in their national teams, even few months before their respective finals.
Nowadays uefa, fifa do everything to eliminate the underdogs and stories like this. It doesn't sell if a yeam with no stars wins.

It's interesting that Brazil haven't won a World Cup since 2002 plus before last week, Argentina had not won a Copa America since 1993. I say interesting, because for me, at international football, it's the teams who are solid defensively that tend to be difficult to beat and in turn, end up winning these competitions. You look how solid Italy were defensively in 2006, hardly scored any but still won it. Yet on the flip side to this, Brazil's all out expansive attacking approach with two defenders saw them lose 7-1 to Germany in 2014. And what better example to use than Greece in 2004. They knew they didn't have the quality to go toe to toe with sides, so they just made sure the defence was as solid as it could be and played to keep clean sheets, which saw them win the tournament. Very different approach to sides like Brazil, Argentina, France, Netherlands etc etc.
But my question, from an entertainment perspective, is has football since 2004 been more or less entertaining than the period of the 80's, 90's and early 00's?
I have an impression that Brazil is gonna win the 2022 WC in Qatar.Mucha suerte!
