- Do Nerds watch sports? Of course they do! Every discipline is stuffed with science and technology, and interesting facts you had never noticed. So, yes, nerds have more fun, even when watching the olympic games.
To get you started I have made a couple of videos to explain the science, technology and general nerdiness at work in archery, fencing, the pole vault, the decathlon and the marathon.
Enjoy!

I'm wondering how they determined those variables ( a, b and c ) idea for a follow up video?
a ( b - x ) comes from -ax + b where a is the slope and b is the value of the graph where it hits the y -axis.
Like lieven described, they choose an x value for 0 and an x value for 1000 (bad and good result) then they connect a straight line and make a graph. Then they can easily calculate a and b from the graph.
Now for c. The c gradient is just a number to make the scores more balanced.
In running, the time between the first and third or fourth is relatively small, which means the c gradient should be very high, as each milisecond faster should be rewarded greatly.
In disciplines like high jump or javelin throw. Its much easier to distinguish you from other athletes, you can throw very very far or jump very very high.
So the c gradient should do less work in balancing which is why their gradient is lower.
How the exact number of c came to be i dont know either, but it just wants to be as balanced as possible.
Lieven, kan ik ergens je filmpje over de 'imaginary decathlon' nog ergens online terugvinden?
where is your Dutch langue
Those guys from Zaffelare probably stole it!
