I have said many times that the John deere 4240 was one of the best tractors ever built. They were modern enough to have the creature comforts of a soundguard cab with air conditioning and an fm stereo. It also has power steering and a hydraulic seat. But they are old enough to come from an era when things were still built mostly out of metal, and when things just seemed to be more solid and put together better. We have 2 sister 4240's we bought them both in 1982, one brand new, and the other had just a few hours on it. They both have been very durable and reliable. With the only mechanical issues being batteries and the occasional alternator and air conditioning components. And those issues were several years apart. One of those tractors I put a starter on last year when the tractor was 42 years old. The other one still has the original starter on it. Thanks for letting me share that with you !

The John Deere 4440, size bigger than the 4240 was more popular than the 4240. 4440's are bringing big money with thousands of hours on them today

At one point we had an 81 model 4440, an 86 model 4450, and an 89 model 4455.
The 4440 had the Quad Range and the other two had 15 speed powershifts.
All of them were bullet proof.

My brother has two Ford 4 cylinder tractors and I have one, 860, 871, and my 631. I started with a 720D in the 70’s and soon got a 730D as well. Now working on an Allis D-17D for entertainment value. Have fun

JD 40 series were reliable for the most part but had some oddities, the cab had that bizarre big arse hinge in the wind screen and the cab was hard to get into . The inside cab filter was a very poor design, IHC had a self cleaning filter over the back window! Also the engine should have been moved forward and a fuel tank put between engine and cab this also reduces noise levels.

The 40 through the 55 series are great tractors. Have to include the 60 series large frame tractors.

Australia here, I've operated them all over the years though I'm an International man myself. A couple of farmers round here still use them. Ones a 4440 and the other is a very nice 4640, both with quad-box transmissions. I did many hours on a 4840 with a straight 8 power shift. They seem to get electrolysis corrosion in the cylinder liners, and fail at around 8000 hours.

I grew up plowing a 5 bottom with a JD4440 powershift. It would climb the front end up when plows got too deep. Boy would it pull and sound awesome. Always started and always pulled well. 😊

My dad had a good friend that owned a bunch of borrow pits and he had a big ol Fiat Allis 41 it was actually the proto type demo dozer of that series made to go show it off to contractors, it had a bullet proof glass floor so you could see the transmission working as you worked the dozer. As a kid it was the coolest thing I’d ever seen as I was and still am a huge bull dozer junkie💪

The other day I saw an HD41 getting cut up for scrap. Must not have been all that good. As was stated earlier the 4440 was THE tractor of the 40 series. My cousin's husband has Golden Jubilee but it's says in his garage along with his collector cars.
