Lord Jamar Blasts Idea That '90s Hip Hop Lacked a Kanye

  • With a debut album on Def Jam and while making headlines for his outlandish commentary, Lord Jamar seemed to miss out on the buzz surrounding freshman rapper Vince Staples. The Brand Nubian rapper tells DJ Vlad that he isn't aware of the budding Long Beach native or his statement that the 90s are overrated because they didn't have a Kanye. After getting a good laugh, Lord Jamar blamed people for making sales more important than quality or impact of culture within the genre. "Trying to put a critique and a standard on Hip-Hop that is more Euro-based than it is Afro-based." He explained, "All these idiots are the first ones to always talk about how much they sold, and all of this dumb s***, as if all of that matters when it comes to the quality of Hip-Hop."
    Watch above as Lord Jamar and DJ Vlad go through the "Kanyes" of the Golden Era above.

      The best selling rappers are Eminem, Kanye, biggie, jay z, Andre 3000...think there's a direct correlation between sales and quality

    • @riqvader318
      @riqvader318 8 лет назад +10

      +reali reddoot There's a direct correlation between sales and good marketing get it straight. If any of the rappers you just named had stayed indie they'd still be making quality music, just without the sales. There's countless quality artists without the big corporation push, that consistently put out amazing work. Real heads will know this

    • @realone2445
      @realone2445 8 лет назад

      +Randy Marx the artist who creates the work has a direct hand in its marketing. So whoever does that well, it's a success upon them conveying their art in how it's intended to be delivered. Makes them better artist to me. Any "indie person" that fails to do so, there's a reason their indie. If you think artist don't have an executive hand in the marketing of their music, than you greatly underestimate them. That would at why you have that silly view

Im not gonna lie I used to be one who thought 90s hip hop was overrated as a teen (I'm 23 btw) but as I got older I learned to appreciate hip hop for what it was and started to discover all the different styles and sounds that were coming out at that time left to right. Especially when you compare it to what it is now. Dead. Smh a couple of years ago i probably wouldve agreed with vince on this because of my ignorance, but seeing how much worse hip hop has gotten just since this interview makes me appreciate THEE golden era even more now.

    FOR THE YOUNGINS THAT STILL DON'T GET IT.
    Rappers focused more on being unique back then. That's why the music sounded better as a whole. Busta Rhyme, Nas, Das Efx, etc.. are all from the same city but they sound nothing alike. Back then it was blasphemous to sound like someone else unless you were in the same group. Groups like Outkast, Bone, and Wutang had members that used the same rhyme style but no other rapper outside those groups used that style without getting called out. In today's music, everyone uses the same flow and cadence leaving us with a saturation of the same emotionless bars over a good beat and catchy chorus.

Vince Staples just has low standards for music which is why his "music" is underperformed and overlooked. That boy was born in 1993. That says it all. I usually don’t waste my time with non-positive state of mind people like you and with bad faith. When I say 90’s Hip Hop Legends I’m talkin’ about artists that marked the 90’s (since it’s the subject of that video). I’m not talkin’ about when the artists began to rap. Many of them marked the 80’s and the 90’s as well. Eric B. & Rakim had 2 albums in the 90’s and were touring during that period. Beastie Boys : 3 studio albums in the 90’s (more than in the 80’s),… If I wanted to mention only the artists that began their career in the 90’s like Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Mobb Deep, Nas,… there still would be some people like you who would tell me “They began to rap in the 80’s but were still not known…” or “Where are Public Enemy, EPMD, LL Cool J,… ?”. They all marked the 90’s ! We used to see them on Yo! MTV Raps during that era… I could make a list of only 90’s artists (who did nothing in the 80’s) without Wikipedia ! I’m an old school head. Everybody understood what I meant about 90’s Legends except YOU. Even Lord Jamar mentions these 80’s-90’s artists… That will be my last comment. Peace, Unity, Love & Havin’ Fun !

    I mean, the funny part is I'm still forgetting people, and everyone I listed isn't just some rapper of the time, they all have classics and produced some of the greatest albums and songs ever. Ever. E-V-E-R.
    And you think Kanye came along and did anything special? Lyrically he can never hold a mic with these guys and as a producer he's just a product of the computer era. Dudes have been sampling shit forever. What, Kanye samples are more "artistic" or something? Get the fuck outta here.
    I'll take a premier beat over Kanye any day of the week.

    First of all anytime a newer artist tries to dis the 90's they are clearly just salty bc they know it's true. The 90's had literally some of best music and movies and just media and entertainment pd. Now the fact of the matter is most current artist don't even make good entire albums anymore, and idk if they can. It's acceptable to have 2 or 3 poppin' singles and that's it. Please I was in the car with Drake and other day listening to Drake's new CD and I SWEAR I did not know when the songs were changing. It all just sounded like one long ass song. That same slow melody with that slow ass generic steady drum beat, sing-rapping on every song. Wack!

    I think what Vince was really just trying to say was that 90s hip hop didn't have an impact on him because he was just a kid in the 90s. The 2000s music was bigger to him because that's what he was listening to growing up and that's the music he enjoys. Rappers like Kanye, 50, Wayne, and even bow wow (he said it, not me) are more important to him because he remembers when they blew up and their biggest songs/albums dropped. I don't think he was dissing 90s hip hop, he was just saying that music doesn't mean as much to him as the 2000s stuff

    People in the 80's and 90's, truly Loved Rap music and the Hip-Hop culture. They woke up and feel asleep with it on their minds and heart. You don't see that
    kind of love for Rap and Hip-Hop in these artist because they are only in it for the money. Not to mention the record labels are only interested in putting out and promoting certain kind of Urban music, which that in it's self is in a high level of destruction! They will rather promote the hell out of Young Thug instead of Nas or J.Cole. This generation LACKS imagination and Pure Raw Talent, therefore you are and will be stuck with Trash.

    We got all the talent and inspiration from the 90's era because 90's studied the craft from the time before and heighted it. 90's was the last era of the originators and innovators. That's why artist from the 90's era can hop on a song today and nobody questions whether or not they'll kill it, it's already been proven by their legacy. If these artists didn't hit then why are you excited still when an old head from then agrees to do a feature with you. All I see is a bunch of videos where these new kids are constantly thanking them for even rocking with them over and over again. See how long these new kids last after the fame drops, it's gonna be very few. I still rock with Pac, Biggie, Bone Thugs, Snoop and Dre till this day, two of them are dead and still miles ahead

      I personally agree with you but you have to understand that people born after the biggie and pac days they like the new generation of hip hop and consider that the best, it's just their opinion, it's not right and it's not wrong.

    • @lawnguylanda912
      @lawnguylanda912 8 лет назад

      +Vuzy Dube this generation of kids don't want to think that's the problem that's why they like these bs artists. They wanna hear a beat and not listen to the lyrics. My day it was about lyricism , I miss that. Now we have ppl dressing up in skirts and shit , it's ridiculous and a joke. There will never be a rapper that comes out of this generation that is considered a great like biggie and tupac or pun or big L. Never!

    • @kidvuzy
      @kidvuzy 8 лет назад

      But majority of these bs artist are just ones you can get turnt up too and another thing hip hop has changed a lot like hip hop has its own sub genres and is all about expressing yourself that's why you see males dressed up in skirts and talking about dicks because they're expressing themselves there's not much we can do as why that's what hip hop is about. personally I don't consider Big L as a great nor Tupac as a rapper but as an individual yes

    • @lawnguylanda912
      @lawnguylanda912 8 лет назад

      +Vuzy Dube big L was an amazing lyricist . Many rappers have spoke about him . Jay z was gonna sign him right before he died. Hip hop has died ! People now will sellout just to sell records and that's sad.

      That was a great album as well, a lot of material for that album was originally 50s though. Sings such as "how we do" & "hate it or love it" were originally 50 songs giving to The Game. Don't get me wrong even without those tracks it would've be a good album still but it wouldn't of been as successful on a commerical level with those being the two lead singles you know?

      and that's just off the top, 50 Cent isn't fucking with DOOM, he's not fucking with Black Thought, he's not fucking with Ghostface

    The 90's didn't need a Kanye. The 90's had Nas, Mobb Deep, Biggie, WU-Tang, Snoop, Fugees, Jay Z,Tupac, Dogg Pound, Jeru the Damaja, Gangstarr, Redman, Keith Murray, Eric Sermon, Epmd, Eminem, Mad Skillz, BlackStarr, AZ, Outkast, Rass Kass, Chino XL, Black Moon, Heltha Skelthah, LL Cool J, Lil Kim, Mase, Puffy, Master P,Lox, DMX, Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, CNN, Ice Cube, Common, etc. The list goes on and on. Kayne wouldn't of made it in the 90's. I'm 36 and I grew up on 90's hip hop, and I listen to hip hop in this era. This era of hip hop is no comparison to the 90's hip hop. That's a fact. If you 22, 18, or 26 years old and you're trying to compare the two eras, it's impossible, because you didn't live through it.The 90's hip hop was even better than the 80's. In the 90's, their were so many good rappers, and their were so many classic albums dropped. The best hip hop albums of all time came out in the 90's. Anyone whose followed hip hop for over 20 plus years will admit to this. Also, the 90's did have stars-Tupac was a star,Snoop, LL Cool J, Master P, Biggie, Method Mad, etc., so what is Vince Staples talking about? These rappers were stars, and were even bigger than Kanye West. I respect the younger generation, but I don't respect when a younger person criticizes a certain era or time frame of music when you weren't even around to experience it. That's like me criticizing what Martin Luther King Jr. did based on what I read in books. Well, what I read in books is different from what Jesse Jackson may have to say about him because Jesse Jackson actually knew the man personally, and he lived through that time. You can't judge or criticize something if you've never experienced it personally; you can' t assume or just go off he-say-she-say

      Either way he is still wrong. Pac and BIG may have been the biggest stars of the 90s era, but they weren't making the best music. You can't equate popularity and stardom to quality of music, which is what Jamar is saying. How much did Illmatic, Low End Theory, Reasonable Doubt, One for All etc sell? But you can't find many albums that can compete with those.

    Get out of my face with that !! I agree 100% with Lord Jamal !!!! Who is Kanye ???? That insult to all the legends from 80's 90's Hip Hop Man !!! That is one the reason why can't deal with these young little punks today man !! These kids have no type of respect at all !!! I nothing against Kanye or Eminem , but they would not have made it in that era !!! For the simple fact that there was way too much talent back then whether there it was east, west, north or south !!! Even Jay Z was a small fish in that era !! Get out my face with B.S. !!!!! That is why I don't even listen to these wack kids today !!!
