Love your steely Dan videos, please keep em going! You’re great to listen to and tell their stories very well. Can’t wait to hear what the uhqr gaucho could bring. Much love to Steely Dan and you as well!
Thanks for another video on Steely Dan. Third World man was the song that revealed all the beauty of S.D. music for me when it was out aired on radio ( Radio Popular de Vigo, Spain, back in the day as you say. From then on my quest for the album in wich the song was included began ( and i didn´t know wich was, because in that time Steely Dan music in Portugal was virtually unknown) and lead me to Pretzel Logic, spanish edition lp. Anyway the cover seemed the correct one for that song...particular the final part. Of course it wasn´t but aloud me to hear other musical pearls as Any major dude and others. After that became Countdown do Ecstasy and Aja and only after that i discovered the exact location, in Gaucho. All spanish (re)editions from the early eighties. Later i discovered that the only new song in the 1978 Greatest Hits, Here at the western world, has the same sound feeeling, to me. What i appreciate in your videos is the typical american perspectiva that you show, naturally different of a guy like me ,from Portugal with a diverse cultural environment, but equally interesting. Music is an universal bond, really. José
The version of The Second Arrangement from a production out of Nashville, International Dan Collective co ordinated by Scott Sheriff with Bill Schnee with Michael Omartian featuring is a master quality version - listen for your self
Love the Steely Dan videos. Keep em coming! Really wish AP would've stuck with the original release schedule and had Katy Lied coming out next instead, but nonetheless I'm looking forward to Gaucho. 👍
I’m not big into Steely Dan, not sure if its because i didnt have much exposure to them here in Australia, don’t think they made it to big here, or maybe just no one in my family or local radio played them. I do have a great Japanese early pressing of Aja and in my wants list Greatest Hits which I’ve heard great things. But really happy these are available on UHQR, so if i do get into them I have options.
The UHQR is the definitive version these days, but if you don't want to fork out $150 for that, I'd go for the original US "AB-1006" pressing. If you can find a Greatest Hits cut RL, you'll be in good shape. ;)
Love it. I ordered my UHQR of Goucho early December 23 and it still says “to be announced”. Only two left to get after that one is released and I’ll have the set. My set up is similar to yours except I have the Cornwall IVs and a Prima Luna Evo 400 integrated.
Thanks Tim. Gaucho is one of my favorite albums of all time. I have the Masterdisk RL promo in VG+, a Masterdisk RL in NM and also still sealed the edition for Europe export. Most importantly I was waiting for another Steely Dan related review to mention something you would like to check this weekend. As you know China Crisis has two albums produced by Walter Becker, Flaunt the Imperfection and Diary of a Hollow Horse. I saw them last year here in Toronto. Another European band from Norway was also produced by Walter Becker. The band is Fra Lippo Lippi and they released a similar masterpiece as Flaunt the Imperfection in 1987. The album is Light and Shade and has amazing guitar solos from Walter on a few tracks. Just start with the first track Angel and you will blown away. Pure Steely Dan sound. And guess what....Recorded and mixed by Roger Nichols and Mastered by Bob Ludwig as Masterdisk! Sounds amazing. Enjoy!
Very excited for the UHQR Gaucho to be released....Third World Man is my favorite cut. Nice Seals cap- Is that Ebbets Field? I have a few myself. Great caps!
I believe both Were You Blind That Day and The Bear are Aja-era rerecordings of songs first demoed in the Royal Scam sessions, and they ended up alongside the Gaucho outtakes to be used as reference for potentially remaking them there. Steely Dan recorded Here At The Western World for The Royal Scam but the released recording has additions made in 1978.
I bet the boys were mad about that cut getting lost! Donald was such a perfectionist! I have all the albums. Only the last 2 not not vinyl because of the rarity/cost. I think Royal Scam is my fav, but I would probably swap the last track with a fez on for something else.
I've been collecting records most of my life and I do have Aja along with Can't buy a thrill UHQR but I have to ask myself if I really consider Steely Dan a great band. Especially when I fire up the tube gear, I seldom reach for one their offerings to play.
The only thing with Steely Dan was they toured only after Can't Buy a thrill in the seventies. Because of the other albums being so heavily doctored up prevented them from touring their other albums which was and is a shame.
They actually toured pretty extensively after the 2nd Album but yes, stopped touring altogether in mid '74. I saw them for the first time (Mach 2) in 2000 on the 2VN tour and then several times in the 2010s at the Beacon Theatre in New York - really epic shows.

Even if someone isn’t a Dan Fan, you got to admire your level of passion and expertise with the band. Nice work Tim.
Thx Jason ☺️

Interesting! I picked up a China Crises LP recently that I haven’t spun yet…
Shout out to Col. EH Taylor.

Ebbets it is! I’ve got a bunch… 👍🏻
"Were You Blind That Day" was recorded in the same session as the Aja title track using the same musicians.
Larry Carlton is on record as remembering this was cut during the Royal Scam sessions.
@@Universityofvinyl According to Gary Katz it was recorded during the same session as "Aja."

Does sound like a sweet version

The last two are available now on Acoustic Sounds - great pressings for approx $60 each.
@@Universityofvinyl thanks Tim!
I’m sure that EH Taylor pairs well with some SD!
Reaction videos.
Gotta stay en vogue Ken!!
Maybe not a band but a rotational ensemble
Definitely accurate from ‘75 onwards
