God. What a Big Diaspora Mood™.
I'd already watched the story teaser on Genshin Impact's RUclips channel before I played the story quest, but in the context of Shenhe's backstory this hit even HARDER. Wanted to share some thoughts I had after.
Trust me when I say that I could have ranted another full hour trying to communicate the feelings that welled up in my chest as I watched Beijing opera showcased and celebrated on the global stage in such a truly magnificent way, with all the delightful multicultural influences that make Genshin Impact the game it is.
It remains to be seen whether the regions we get next will have a similar level of respectful attention to detail in terms of honoring the cultures they're inspired by, but I'm excited to see how it all unfolds!

Kinda late on this as I just saw the cutscene the other day but....playing thru the story then the opera...The way it was told and with the visuals....I had to tell my friend to stop talking and had to mute myself on Discord because I was sniffling like mad. The singing was beautiful and made me feel like I ACTUALLY got a reward for doing something even though in truth all it was was listening.

i didn’t fully understand yun jins opera voice when she was first officially revealed- i didn’t make fun of it or anything, but it was definitely jarring to hear; i’ve never seen or heard any chinese opera before this. but let me tell you. when i heard her sing and perform in game i cried a bit😭😭 her singing is so beautiful and it gives me chills every time i hear it, i have it saved in my playlist and i’m so happy they put it the game and that they kept it in for all the languages. i think it’s really wonderful that a video game is opening up to so many different cultures and introducing people to them!!! i can’t wait to see what they bring us for the other regions too :-) even if the cultures seem foreign or strange to us at first, i hope we can learn to appreciate them !

I hate to tell you this, but REAL Chinese opera sounds more like that isolated voice clip than this song. The harsh nasal tones and separated vibrato was HEAVILY toned down to create a much more western and less harsh fused style. Don’t get me wrong, I still love it, but I just don’t want people thinking this song was 100% authentic and that most Chinese opera sounds very close to this, it really doesn’t. Doesn’t mean it sounds bad, but this was definitely a bit of a halfway compromise between the two styles.

Yeah sadly, this is a spinoff genre of songs based on Beijing opera singing style (京歌), rather than the opera style itself (京剧). The actual opera is every bit as inaccessible and harder to appreciate musically/aurally as the stereotypes make it out to be, which is a shame as a dying artform. But given that it's dying, if even one young person out of a hundred who checks out the original opera style after hearing this derivation from Yunjin decides to immerse themselves more and even become a part of it, them Yunjin's character will have singlehandedly given this art hope for another generation.

Nothing to be ashamed of, its common to find foreign and unfamiliar things "odd", it might even strike us as funny without intentionally being disrespectful.
It doesn't matter if Yun Jin's singing isn't "Real Chinese Opera" as people say, if the song got an emotional response as strong as actually crying?
Then you did more than just appreciate it. Let's just say you've "acquired a taste" things like it might not be your favorite, but its no longer just a funny sound to you.

4:02 is so relatable :(( As a Chinese person who was born/grew up in Canada, it felt amazing to see something i've heard of briefly as a kid (chinese opera) be included in a game that's so popular internationally, but it was also disheartening to see so many ppl on western social media just criticizing and insulting Chinese opera when yun jin's teasers started coming out. On the bright side, there are even more ppl who have become interested in learning about Chinese opera and Chinese culture in general, which is pretty cool. As for the diaspora feeling, the mixed feelings and the painful in-betweenness are so relatable 🥺 for me, there are times when I feel like I can't relate with a lot of my friends here because they aren't interested in Chinese media, like dramas, music, celebrities, etc. At the same time, I've only experienced bits and pieces of Chinese culture from what my parents and grandparents taught me, so it can be hard to fully relate to some of my international friends from China. At the end of the day, I'm at least happy that Chinese culture is being more widely spread and appreciated through games like genshin or dramas. ☺

The adepti-like creatures appear in a 2400 year old book called "The Classic of the Mountain and the Seas" which is like the Chinese Silmarillion, a legendary history of China. I recently picked up a big illustrated edition in Chinese which is so beautiful, it actually has a character that looks identical to Cloud Retainer. As a Chinese diaspora I'm so thankful for what they've done and continue to do with this game. Little by little I hope that our friends in the West or anywhere will have an interest in Chinese civilization. Due to historical circumstances it wasn't exported for people to really understand, but things are changing, what this game did was a very good example.

    • @tinyhowie
      @tinyhowie 2 года назад +25

Well adepti is more a Taoism concept. Despite The Classic of Mountain and Sea originated around same period of time, they are nothing related. Also the Taoism back then was nothing like we know in modern time. Lao Zi did not talk about adepti, he talked about philosophy more than mythicism. It was his apprentices and later generations who actually dived into the mythical taoism as we know today.

What you said about the in-betweeness resonates with me so much and in so many ways of my life, and I believe for many other immigrants or children of immigrant parents and probably even mixed children too. While I am American and identify as American, I never feel like I am completely American as I like to keep in touch with my culture and roots, but yet no matter how much I like to keep in touch with the Chinese part of me, I will never be fully Chinese either. Sometimes it feels quite painful to know that I am a part of both, yet not a part of either, especially as tensions grow between the countries and sometimes I feel like and outcast on both sides. All this to say I have quite the identity crisis and I don't think this is going away anytime soon 😂

I related to so much you said in this video! As a Chinese Singaporean, even though I studied Chinese formally for 10 years in school, my proficiency is shockingly bad and I never learnt Classical Chinese either. And about representation and mourning, I may not be Chinese-American but I kind of get it because something similar happened to me this year, watching Encanto. I'm a Venezuelan living in Spain so I'm not Colombian and it's not MY culture, but from all the Latin American countries they're the closest to my culture since we're neighbors and we have things in common that made me resonate hard. And seeing the characters eating arepas made me so soft? It's so silly, but true. Not even my other latine internet friends get it. The houses look like traditional colonial-style houses too. This is the closest I've seen to my homeland from Hollywood (Venezuela is more used as jungle filming set), and it's also delightful to see Colombian rep that's not drug dealers and mafia tbh. The movie is really good and relatable too which just makes it better

Growing up in a American household that only speaks English with only my mother and a quite closed minded grandmother I wasn't exposed to different languages growing up other than the standard Spanish classes you get forced into as a kid. So watching this video made me appreciate hearing Chinese Opera for the first time there's a part of me that wishes I could understand it for how it truly is meant to and maybe that's why now I try to expand my palette by listening and watching different cultures.
Anyways long almost 1am brain rambling aside! I love the content you make, i wish you and your family safe and easy times and to a better 2022 Ying! ♥️

I used to not like chinese opera and id be in my room while my grandma blasts it on the radio but this cutscene and the song made me cry, i rewatched this at least 10 times already, the traditional aspects of the performance and modern instruments are amazing tgt
i grew up listening to chinese opera but didnt understand why my grandparents like it so much, but now i think i do

i went into this with no leaks or anything and wasn't expecting a cutscene, I wasn't paying that much attention to the quest except for shenhe's stuff, then this played and I fully didn't expect a cutscene of this scale to play, it was so pretty and it made me cry lmao

Thank you for talking at length about the emotional impact of this scene, what it meant to you and the future of the game.
I also ugly cried but for a different reason. I am not Chinese, but I grew up isolated and hated by my father, sacrificing myself to protect my sister, and it was frightening how similar Shenhe's story was to mine. I'm now on medication that feels like Shenhe's red ropes. I, too, saw the cutscene before actually reaching it in game and thought it was badass. After hearing the story, I cried so hard. She's lonely, but there are those who know her heart, and stand with her to fight injustices. What a lovely sentiment for someone like me to hear.

and then, i (finally) put my game voiceover BACK in Chinese, and i was going thru all of my personal S tier characters' lines (Yun Jin included), and one of her actual voicelines is sung in the same way, and I CRIED AGAIN AT LITERALLY ONE SUNG LINE?????? literally crying everyday i can't fully appreciate the depth.
(i literally never stop listening to all of Liyue's OST tbh 🧍🏻).

I am so incredibly thankful to Genshin for letting me experience such a beautiful and ancient culture, it’s opened my eyes to this part of the world.
It’s wonderful to be able to experience and see how amazing and vast this incredible this old world we live in is and to learn to see things through my own eyes and not through the media that is portrayed in my country.
I’ve switched to CN for around 8mths now and won’t be going back, there’s something different in experiencing these stories in it.
Genshin dragged me into a whole different side of the world and I adore it for it.
I loved seeing your take on this cutscene and I 100% agree with everything you said! Looking forwards to more!

Ngl, when I first heard her sing (her singing voiceline) I kinda thought it was weird, it was my first time ever hearing Chinese opera and I thought that this performance wouldn't be my cup of tea. Man, I was fucking wrong. When those curtains revealed yunjin and she started singing, my face was permanent awe. By the end I don't even realize my eyes getting watery, I guess yunjin really proved me wrong.

yunjin's performance really brought me to tears. ive always been so enamored with chinese culture ever since i was little so i did all i could into discovering about it and recently it was chinese opera through genshin impact. to see you happy here makes me happy too, ive heard from so many other friends who were overjoyed at the fact other players worldwide love to play this game and people opening up to their culture. i come from republic of moldova (a tiny country situated in eastern europe) so all my life i have never gotten close to representation in the videogame industry but knowing that genshin impact has brought light onto this culture gives me hope that one day, i will have a videogame character from my background. that alone brings me to tears. :') great video!

One thing I love about Yun Jin’s Singing Actress is miHoYo could have easily cast a young woman just because she’s young. But they chose Yang Yang for her skill. It’s clear that miHoYo definitely cares about their story, even if they fall short in other places.
Yun Jin’s singing wouldn’t work without Yang Yang’s gorgeous voice

Chinese Singaporean here. My mom used to be be part of a Chinese opera troupe as her hobby but she left it when she had me (and later my sister). She likes to sing it from time to time still in the bath but like what you said, growing up I don't really understand the dialects etc and also kind of handwaved it away from time to time, asking her to lower her volume sometimes just because we live in a HDB flat (housing development board apartments) here and neighbours might be disturbed by it.
When Yun Jin's leak came out and I saw her poise and motions and immediately gave my mom a look at it, and I think she approves of the accuracy of it. Needless to say, when the Yun Jin opera cutscene came out, I also linked her to it. Till date, I think that's the one and only Genshin Impact video I ever shared with her

For instance my language of Afrikaans had only been in 2 games mgs5 in one interrogation scene and in farcry 2 where my language is that of the mercenaries fighting the player and I've yet to meet an Afrikaner who didn't like being yelled at in our own language or who hasn't yelled back in our language🤣🤣

I remember when my friend showed me the video during lunch break at school and from how amazed I was, I definitely went emotional. It's hard to convince people that there are a lot of good things about the Chinese culture as Western media, if not always, usually portrays otherwise. The closest good thing that pops into people's brain when the Chinese culture is brought up is no other than Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee or the animated Disney movie "Mulan" which isn't bad but it's not accurate and never really did a whole justice. Seeing such grand piece of one's culture being portrayed on a platform that people of all genders, age, race, nationality and etc could see definitely is something worth shedding tears over

i agree with every single point you mentioned here. its so so nice and wonderful to me how different people all around the world could be in some ways but in some other similar, like all these things related to culture and stuff , its really really beautiful to me and i do believe yeah from an outsider point of view it may not be too much or maybe just a little but to someone who can actually understand how it is it would be something truly different in their eyes. like how when a group of people get represented to outsiders and such it may not be that much but to them it may mean so so much that words cant even describe
i find it really great that mihoyo is using all of the cultural things and putting it into a wonderful story and also introducing many people to new stuff and culture
like me for example, after that cutscene i did infact go and watch some chinese opera cause i liked it so so much , it can be pretty impactful
but yeah it was also great getting to see your reactions and also the singing at the end

This might sound a bit silly, but I've always loved the Chinese Opera singing style because a friend of my parents used to sing karaoke at parties in the style, so when people initially reacted negatively it hurt something inside myself. It almost felt personal? Like witnessing a ton of microaggressions all at once. I hope that once people saw it in game they got over that initial rejection, but it still hurt. I'm also Chinese American and what you described of the inbetween, I just understood. It's hard to put the feeling into words but I think you got the gist of it.
This opera cutscene also made me emotional. When it started I just kind of sat back in my chair and let it wash over me. It's crazy how much being represented an affect a person haha. You never notice how much you're missing out until it's right in front of you. Ahhhhhhhhhhh
