    Lesson of the day ; Yoasobi is the Imagine Dragons of Japanese composers

    • @clampy7905
      @clampy7905 20 дней назад +4

      I don't understand the hype around Ayase. He doesn't even utilize Ikuta's strength as a vocalist, he just used her like a voice bank. He might as well have used Miku. Yoasobi keeps churning out basic slop because they know people will still eat it up no matter how generic it is. Sure, they may add a new element to the song that doesn't fit, like awkward rap verses and key changes, which Ayase uses in most of his songs. The only time I want to listen to them is when I'm in the mood to hear Ikuta, but at that point, why not just listen to her own originals?.
      Yoasobi doesn't seem to love making music; they appear disinterested, and it shows. They don't care if what they produce is good or bad, generic or fresh. As long as they can make money off of it, that's all that matters to them.
      As Ravenclaw mentioned, the only compelling aspect of each and every Yoasobi song is the lyrics. The song doesn't need to be interesting or engaging, and it certainly doesn't factor into consideration how well Ikuta's vocals fit the song. Perhaps Ayase should focus on writing poetry instead of music.
      P.S.: I needed to get my Yoasobi rant off my chest.

      @@clampy7905 I like some of their songs, but I agree with you about how they (under)utilize Ikuta. I love her voice (I've been following her since before Yoasobi) but I find myself enjoying many covers more than the originals. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with catchy, generic slop (which clearly sells), but I also don't think there's anything wrong with wanting more than that.

    • @clampy7905
      @clampy7905 20 дней назад +1

      @@MicheldiedYes, there's nothing wrong with Yoasobi's music being light-hearted and enjoyable for some people, even if the others might find it a generic like me. However, I don't believe that Yoasobi deserves the label of the biggest artist from Japan when there are other more deserving artists. They're like the Taylor Swift of Japan. Additionally, the fact that some people prefer cover versions of their songs rather than the originals highlights how much care was put into ensuring Lilas Ikuta's vocals weren't properly mixed with the instruments Or give her a chance to shine. Ayase truly earns the 'one-trick pony' title in the J-pop scene at the moment, considering the consistent and repetitive quality of their music.

    • @Micheldied
      @Micheldied 20 дней назад +1

      @@clampy7905 whether something is deserved, unfortunately, is hard to say, objectively. Marvel movies (at least before the last two to three years) are some of the highest earning and highest watched movies of all time. Are they the best movies of all time? Far from it. But they've made slop that so many are happy to gobble up, and if something satiates more people than anything else, can you honestly say it totally isn't deserved? *shrugs*

    • @clampy7905
      @clampy7905 20 дней назад

      @@MicheldiedHonestly, I have to admit that I'm a bit salty. At the end of the day, music is entirely subjective, but I can't personally understand why they are as well-liked as they are. they don't have much variety in their music and keep recycling the same formula in their songs, if you've heard yoru ni kakeru then you've pretty much heard their entire catalogue.Some people appreciate that consistency, while others might find it a bit monotonous.

    What the heck this video was so fascinating! Especially the part where you laid out all the chord for the various ayase songs. That feeling I had about ayase songs finally made sense.
    That said I still love them, but it’s incredibly interesting to have the insight on the structure. Probably one of the coolest videos you’ve put out so far!
    Really looking forward to the rest of the series!

    only halfway through the video at the moment but i resonate with your sentiments towards michizure so much lol.
    i remember i was really excited for this one because i knew some ayase songs like cinema, ghost city tokyo and yokubari which i really enjoyed, and then michizure came along and i was expecting something that was at least as catchy (i kinda already got used to all of his songs sounding the same). i'll admit from the album teaser michizure didn't sound very ayase-like (it didn't include the pre-chorus which does sound like every single ayase song ever), but the song itself was so underwhelming. i still enjoyed it and replayed it a lot but compared to -almost- everything else in the album, not great, and definitely not "lead single" material at all. instrumentation lacking punch, kinda short, and weird quiet breaks, it just didn't have that oomph.
    live version was substantially more fun to listen to though.

    Long comment ahoy!
    Old man here just letting you know that fro-yo first reared its ugly head in the '80s and '90s. Everything is cyclical. Much like an Ayase song. #burn
    I want to highly compliment you for how you presented this material. I often have trouble following along with videos on music theory and how songs are structured, but all of your points and examples came through super clearly.
    I was aware of four or five Yoasobi/Ayase songs as being Ayase's work, and then between the video and some of the comments, I found out that I knew several more. I'm also not surprised that Suisei wanted to work with Ayase, given how many of his songs she's covered.
    It's funny--as the video progressed, I thought of Idol and Kaibatsu as two songs that, while not breaking this mold apart, did seem to use some of the techniques to better effect, so I was happy that you mentioned both at the end. I enjoy how Idol does "mood" changes, which I think breathes more life into parts that by themselves might not be exceptional.
    (Although while I was writing this last comment, I was trying to remember how Kaibatsu's chorus goes, and so I started humming the verse in my head . . . and slipped into Idol before I got to the chorus. Hmm.)

      I appreciate your comment and the additional fro-yo history. I should’ve known it was a throwback 😂
      I’m also glad we share the same view on Idol and Kaibutsu, where there are clear efforts to try something fresh. I’d also say Yoasobi’s latest song Undead furthe breaks out a little more too. Promising signs!

    ive had the absolute luck to have michizure be the very first ayase song i've ever heard 😂the second one was idol, which is one of the most distinct as you've pointed out
    i have no music theory knowledge at all (and slowly absorbing yours via these vods, rly looking forward to my fav true girls show!) but when i checked out other ayase songs after listening to those first two a bunch i could tell immediately how similar they were, and seeing it dissected here was mindblowing!
    now, for my Opinions(tm):
    -the brass in michizure doesnt sound 'plasticky' to me, just... distant, far in the background, so a lot of the lows get lost? i think they're very expressive but mostly sits back so suisei's vocals can sit very nicely on top of everything; also, now with having seen ayase songs be strung and laid out like this, i think suisei's vocal take for michizure really lets her personal flair shine through, so now i appreciate it even more
    -the key changes in mister actually sounds like a progression to me (my very first time listening to it here) and i just gave it a full listen... a song about a robot apparently? so the jarring key changes does serve to fit the lyrics (it drops right as it's revealed that the girl is a robot, 'my mechanical heart'), and the instruments and singing feeling like it's very precise and stilted in a way does fit the theme... then again i am a dissonant melodies enjoyer
    -re: music industry, it's definitely the reality of 'comissioning art for commercial purposes', with deadlines to meet and a 'strong identity' required to market... i went through the 'lets produce a brand -> well that limits me to this and this and i wont be able to do that -> ah f* it lets just go indie' circle of hell myself, now on to the circle (currently practicing guitar to get good enough to record)
    i'm in HSH if you'd like to chat about music analysis!

      I do wonder too, but also I imagine it makes playing an entire set of songs much easier as there’s not so much variation!

    Great video! I think it’s the one I’ve found to be the most interesting song analysis so far. Although I don’t think the making a song in the style of someone is a very repeatable formula (ironically), it’s probably the reason I was more invested and understood the information better. You also did a great job being informative and constructive, didn’t feel like you where bashing Ayase at all to me.
    To add my opinion, I personally have come to like the almost midi like brass and Ayase’s songs by themselves do sounds great to me, contrasted by chainsmokers whose songs made me very bored very quickly even the first time I heard them. It’ll be fun recognizing Ayase’s style and I’ll be careful not to overdose because I know myself and I’ll get bored by it.
    Looking forward to the next video! And to a Starpeggio analysis if that is to come someday

    For Michizure I was just digging the drum and the big band vibe. Completely unaware how any why so many YOASOBI songs sound the same. I just went to listen the beginning of Yuusha and immediately burst out laughing from hearing the rhythm 😂
    I do remember Michizure wasn't an instant hit to me and took a while before I want to go back to listen to it once or twice, unlike TEMPLATE and GHOST which immediately got me hooked.
    Thank you for the insight as always.

  • @TheCardinalBiggles42

    Great analysis as always, and very educational! I hadn't listened to enough Ayase songs to notice the sameness, and without that knowledge I'd say Michizure is a decent track but not the strongest on the album. However, when you played the clips back-to-back the "Ayase flavor" became super obvious, and halfway through your song creation process I couldn't help but hear parts of Michizure in several of the examples.

    Very condescending video honestly
    You issue with the chord progression is honestly dumb and sounds like a "pretentious first year music school student" kind of argument, using the same chord progression does not make things be the same, many genres are literally build on the same chord progression, almost the entirety of the blues is just the same chord progression over and over (twelve-bar blues) even the same melodies and rhythms but if you ever listened to blues you won't dare say all the songs are the exact same song, same for a lot of hard rock being the same exact power chords yet nobody can say they are the same. In Yoasobi's case Ayase is going for a certain sound and he uses the chord progression he wants to achieve it and I don't think it's that big of a deal especially since he generally changes a thing or two every time which changes the overall feel of the melody which you pointed out yourself with all the "weird chords" and the addition/removal of certain chords of the progression depending on the song, though you made it seem like a bad thing mocking it saying "groundbreaking stuff" basically hate him for not doing what you criticize him of doing lol while you praised western artists for doing the same earlier in the video. Making me thing the whole video seems like a hit piece on an artist you don't like rather than an honest criticism of his composition.
    I do agree with the overused rhythms he does but again that's normal, you sound as if you just discovered music today, bands play the same exact rhythms all the time even the most creative of bands won't escape that because it is normal, weather it is the vocal rhythm or actual percussion, the majority of pop songs in the charts literally use the exact same drum beat (that if they aren't overusing the same trap beat again and again), it's not a groundbreaking discovery, in Ayase's case since he is the only songwriter of the group there is clearly bias over some rhythmic patterns which you rightfully pointed out but in the same part of the video you are pretending the songs sound the same when they clearly aren't, every example you shown is an identifiable Yoasobi song with a melody that is different from the other.
    As for the key change argument, the whole thing is a nothing burger, there is no right or wrong way to use key changes lol, it amazes me to see these kind of arguments like "don't use this musical thing the way you want to, actually you have to use it the way I'm used to it and the way I learned how to use it because your music should be composed the way I want it to be and not the way you want to express yourself and if you do otherwise then it's weird and you are clearly not telling anything narratively powerful with it because I decided so, while I disregard any artistic intention behind your use of it since obviously the western way of doing it is the supreme one and your country just doesn't know how to do it (you talking about it being "overused" in Japanese music)", this whole Western arbiter calling music of another country and culture "unimaginative" because it does things differently is borderline xenophobic, without mentioning of course the added pretentiousness of calling Japanese composers "rookies" because you obviously know better than them on how they should compose their music smh, proven ofc by your long track record of compositions, not that you should have any to criticize something but idk if you get the right to call a professional composer "rookie mistake". Also you saying you did not read the lyrics yet feel worthy of judging that the key change doesn't add anything "narratively powerful" to the song is just cherry on top lmao
