Rick Froberg was a friend of mine. His brother and I were just chatting yesterday about how unknown but influential he and John were. Not just Jehu, but Hot Snakes and Rocket From the Crypt. We're all pretty crushed at the moment, but seeing you pay respect while breaking down such a killer tune makes my soul a little less sad. Thanks Eric, much appreciated.
Drive Like Jehu is in my top three favorite bands of all time. They may not have been widely known, but by those who knew them, they were hugely impactful. Hot Snakes was also incredible.
The beauty of Jehu is that the guitars are not just played, they are a conduits for expressing what flows through the minds of both players. You can tab out he guitars and someone could get close to approximating their sound, but 50% of it will always be in the soul of the finger tips of these guys. Watch any live Jehu show and see how Speedo plays like he is one with the instrument. He bends and contorts the shit out of his LP to express the kinetic energy and melodies in his brain.
That record is so influential to me. Remember the first time I put this album on and "Here Come The Rome Plows" kicks in, my jaw dropped. Was so gutted when Rick passed, he was still creating incredible art, it really felt like a gut punch. Froberg Forever.
Spent so many years listening to drive like jehu, unwound and slint, my favorite era of hardcore music, so much creative guitar playing, thank you for this tribute 🙏
Favorite band as a teenager and i still listen to them on occasion. Up there with At the Drive-In and Jawbox. Also love the triple pickup Firebird, such a killer guitar.
I walked in the record store yesterday by my house and the young kids that own it had yank crime playing on their turntable. It sounded incredible so I bought the last copy. It was always a favorite of mine from the 90’s and sounds even better on vinyl
This is great and super helpful for mere mortal guitarists like myself. Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes pushed the envelope and I am forever grateful to them. Rick will live forever via his amazing music and art. Thanks fir this!
THANK YOU. For the opening harmonic lead on do you compute especially. Reis, botch’s Dave Knudson, and paper chases john coglenton shaped the basis for just about everything I do on guitar.
Rick Froberg was a friend of mine. His Mother and I were just chatting yesterday about how unknown but influential he and John were. Not just Jehu, but Hot Snakes and Rocket From the Crypt. We're all pretty crushed at the moment, but seeing you pay respect while breaking down such a killer tuna makes my soul a little less sad. Thanks Eric, much appreciated.
Love these kinds of breakdowns. Their arn’t enough people with your know how to teach this stuff. Metz, and Spirit Of The Beehive, Madisson Cunningham, theirs so much unique playing out there.
Hello Eric, just want to let you know that I truly appreciate all you teach and the fact that you make some of your stuff free, not too many do. Makes me really glad to support you.
DLJ was a huge influence on my favorite band, Jimmy Eat World, especially the guitar work on their early records and especially Jim’s live guitar playing, and their drummer produced several of Jimmy Eat Worlds records. Jimmy eat World is the band that inspired me to pick up guitar.
Eric, thank you for your passion, your grace and your authenticity. For years you've been channeling (and teaching!) my heroes, you're the best thing on the internet and a gigantic inspiration. Please keep living.
I forget what prompted me to listen to Drive Like Jehu for the first time, but I started with Yank Crime. When Here Come the Rome Plows kicked in, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I'm still blown away every time I hear it. There's just nothing like Drive Like Jehu.
So so so good dude. Rick's passing hit everyone who's ever loved his music so hard and this was a beautiful tribute. I'm hoping that the Hot Snakes record they were finishing right before Rick passed away sees the light of day one day, his and John's musical legacy should be celebrated far more than it is.
Thank you so much Eric. This is introducing me to both of these bands and the music they have and will create. Spreading the Love of music is what it’s all about. 🙏🏻
I’m so excited to try this when I have my guitar with me. I think I saw Hot Snakes cover this one time, such power and creativity. Thank you for preparing and sharing this one. And thank you Rick, RIP.
Perfect for this song and context: "...a guitar solo is a chance for a sonic event to happen..." Great lesson, as always, Eric, and thanks for once again introducing me to a band with whose music I had been unfamiliar until now. Off I go to listen to this album!
Echoing other people's sentiments, nothing sounds like Rick And John on guitars together. Especially crazy because as far as I recall Rick never even really thought he was a "guitar player." or at least not an adept one. Deeply saddened to hear about his passing but glad there are folks like Eric around to keep the spirit alive and delve into this stuff from a more technical perspective. It's not as if every guitar teacher on RUclips digs both Jehu, Aimee Mann and Ribot so thanks for making cool stuff, dude.
I only recently discovered Drive Like Jehu a couple months back after you name-dropped them in one of your jazz lessons, they've quickly become a firm favourite of mine. Completely agree with your statement at 1:38 about becoming a different type of musician after listening to Yank Crime (on that note, I'll definitely have to give Marquee Moon a spin). Thank you Eric, and RIP Rick Froberg
So underrated. Dude I love your approach. Definitely feel like a kindred spirit. The spectrum of styles you dig is right in line with mine. That pure, unpretentious love of the instrument really comes across.
Can't believe I missed this when you posted it. Froberg and Reis were a huge influence on my playing and how I navigated splitting guitar parts (along with Moore/Ranaldo, Picciotto/MacKaye, Robbins/Barbot, and of course, Lloyd/Verlaine). I was fortunate to catch them twice with Hot Snakes and both times, the band's power brutalized me in the best way. Rick's death was a real gut-punch.
Drive by jehu is one of those cd's that hits you like a ton of bricks. Listening to it was great motivation before a surf or skate session. I found it on vinyl like a year ago and am kicking myself for not scarfing it up.
Never would have thought you'd ever make a video talking about them. I remember watching an interview with Kurt Ballou of Converge where he talks about Yank Crime. Glad I checked it out all those years ago. Its amazing.
I discovered Drive Like Jehu through some compilation on RUclips in high school like 12 or 13 years ago. They're music continues to be a mystery to me, how can someone create such insane, interesting and strange licks!?
I'm from Sandy Eggo. Drive Like Jehu and Rocket From the Crypt were faves of mine just after high school in the mid 90's. I was always bummed I never got to see them at The Casbah.
Very cool viedo, Eric. I was so sad to hear that Rick Froberg passed recently. Rick and John have some great guitar parts and tones with Hot Snakes as well
I'd love for you to do a Hot Snakes lesson as well. they became one of my favorite bands of late after a coworker showed me them. one of the members passed away recently and it might be cool to do another vid as tribute! ty Eric
Damn, what a shame Rick has left us. But what a legacy he leaves behind! Did you ever get into Q and Not U Eric? Speaking of skreetchy unpredictable guitars. I listened to both bands a lot during their heydays.
Q and Not U was the first band I ever saw live, at the Downtown in Farmingdale NY, probably around 2004? Q and Not U's guitar work is ripping and funky but it has a different kind of skronk than Drive Like Jehu, although I think Hooray For Humans is a lesson-worthy song. A lot of funk-style 'scratching' (16th notes with alternate picking). Q and Not U was criminally underrated, glad to hear them mentioned.
@@anthonyparks505 They are sonically different but emotionally similar (to me) so for some reason I always associate the bands. And they both have a certain creative unpredictability which makes for really interesting listening.
Nailed it about how this band changes your guitar playing. They’ve been a massive influence on me and rick’s passing hit me hard. Thankfully i was able to see one of their reunion shows, top 3 show. Yank Crime is in my top 5 of all time thanks for the lengthy intro, I was curious about that. So weird I just starting trying to figure this song out last week after Rick passed

Such a great band! Similar things could be said about Unwound.
best band ever
Unwound is goated!

Fuck yes, slint was a direct inspiration to dlj as well.

They opened with that song when I saw them with Superchunk in '94. Yank Crime had just come out but I hadn't heard it yet.

Interestingly, the “third” you get with harmonics is not quite a major but also not a minor, which means you have three thirds going on.
Weeeeeell, I'd say the thirds you can get in harmonics are very close to their major and minor brethren; I'd even say that they are recognizably major and minor, even if they're not exactly the same as the major and minor thirds in equal temperament.
