I wouldn't say I grew up reading The Inheritance Cycle since I read Eragon around 18-years old, and then got each of the other books in the cycle as they were published. But I was hooked by the characters and enjoyed reading each book. I am also super excited to return to Alagaësia in Murtagh and also to see if any unresolved storylines are addressed.

I read them in 5th grade then found the witch in 8th grade . And now Murtaugh came out recently.
The Inheritance Cycle was my introduction to fantasy, and the deep worldbuilding, magic system with rules, thrilling plotlines and ofc DRAGON RIDING made an impact on me

I read this as an adult and enjoyed it. You can see Paolini developing as an author in terms of character development through the series.
You're right, Jay, he began the series at 15 and at 18, when no one would publish it, his parents did. It became a huge bestseller.
(The movie IS a huge disappointment. It should have been a miniseries.) 😊
It's getting a series on Disney+, with Christopher Paolini himself being a creative lead and co-writer!

It wasn't that no one would publish it, it was that the Paolinis had zero publishing connections. So they just used print on demand.

Just started with Eragon, first 20 pages in. I have a feeling I am going to love this series.
This is one of the best presentation of Inheritance Cycle I've seen.
Shout out to Deltora Quest!! If it wasn't for those books I never would've started reading. Best books for young kids to get started on. Plus super quick reads as an adult.
I just finished reading Murtagh and it felt right in line with the first 4.
The recommendation I give to people who liked Eragon but now want something more original, is to check out Songs of Chaos by Michael R Miller.

The Inheritance Cycle was definitely my intro to the fantasy genre, and is easily the reason for the “dragon shaped hole” I feel in my heart sometimes..
Re-reading the series for Murtagh has been nice, and you can definitely see the depth of some plot lines throughout the series as well as the growth Paolini’s skill
I've known this series since I was a kid and I never brought myself to read it until now. 30 years old but I'm gonna take a leap of faith and buying the whole package to read through them all
One of my all time favorite series. Harry Potter and the Inheritance Cycle are the books that got me into reading. Reading the Cycle again in preparation for Murtagh! After I finish Murtagh I’m jumping into The Way of Kings by Sanderson!

I read the first book as a child, but never actually got the second one in my town. Now, earlier this year, I read all 4 of them and enjoyed my time very much. It's an easy read with characters that you end up really liking
Grew up reading these. Eragon became a fallback comfort read for me when I was between book series. Im currently re-reading them in preperation for Murtagh and theyre just as charming as i remember them being 15 and 20 years ago.
The Inheritance Cycle was hot at my school when I was in 6th grade (2011-2012) because the final book had just come out.
The series wasn't my gateway into high fantasy but it did introduce me to hard magic. The depth to which magic was explained and the various ways it could be used was so different from other series I had read, like LotR and Harry Potter. It took me years to realize what the difference was, but I'm glad I read it.
The Cycle also set the standard for how I see the concept of dragon riders. Though I had read a Pern book (Moreta, Dragonlady of Pern) and Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke, I was still more influenced by the Inheritance Cycle Riders. Beating out the series that defined Dragon Riders in fantasy and a book titled "Dragon Rider" is a pretty good job for a group that couldn't beat fourteen of their own guys.
I'm currently on my fifth read through in 11 years, and noticing a lot of details and setups I missed the first four times. Now that I understand writing better than I did before, the series doesn't just hold up, it looks stronger. I got back into the Cycle because I am working on a fantasy story of my own and recalled Paolini (just in time for Murtagh and a Disney+ series, I see). If I finish my series, it will definitely have nods to this and other works that I've enjoyed.
I am currently reading Murtagh and it started off grabbing me and diving back into Paolini’s world. It is very cozy to me since I was in my 30s when I read the original 4 books. I can’t wait to hear what you think about it.

I woul love to see a quick recomendation on Lightbringer series! I love that color magic system and even though is not the best, I really liked it as a starter series with a magic system a little more complex.
I'm going to have to disagree on the Star Wars part. Eragon's plot is beat for beat that of Star Wars, far beyond the Hero's Journey. Almost every character has a Star Wars counterpart. The roles mat be mixed up a bit but it's still there. The only original plot point is Roran's arc and even then you can argue he's what Biggs Darklighter could have been.
This book was my intro to fantasy books, I read it at 18 and it was the perfect introduction into fantasy reading as it wasn’t too overwhelming and complicated without compromising the story, i personally really love the series ❤
Oh my god when you said Deltora Quest I felt like I was being sucked into a wormhole, I haven’t thought about it in years but it had such a hold on me in elementary school
For a young adult fantasy novel, there were some really gruesome scenes. As a teenager I was both shocked and fascinated by the detail Paolini would use to describe the injuries Eragon and other characters experienced.
Like when Eragons legs got torn up when he rode his dragon Saphirra without a saddle for the first time.
Eldest is one of my favourite books of all time because of how it tackles the issue of chronic pain.

This series was one of my favorites growing up. I asked for murtagh for Christmas so I'll hafta go thru some spark ones or something to get caught back up. There's no way I could read thru them all again rn haha. But still excited to go back to this world after over a decade

The Inheritance Cycle is without a doubt, for me, the pinnacle of fantasy writing for all ages and my personal favourite book series. However, I won’t lie, I didn’t come here to watch the video. I came because I needed to unload my new realisations after just finishing the original tetralogy (group of four) books for the umpteenth time. Maybe the fourth time. I don’t know. Anyway:
1. This was the first time I had read the series after watching Doctor Who. It was so satisfying to understand the “Raxacori…” reference by Angela in Inheritance
2. I learnt that the two women who saved Roran’s life in Urû’baen were the women Eragon blessed on Angela’s request.
3. Umaroth mentioned a hermit who taught the dragons how to hide objects in pockets of space. Could this hermit have been Tenga himself?
Oh, I also didn’t realise that Christopher Paolini made Eragon the former’s own age in the Eragon book.
It's the book that really got me to start reading and is one of the major reasons I'm a writer today.

I enjoy this type of recommendation video- quick and informative! I would like to try these...and just noticed a nice illustrated version was released of the first book.
I'm a middle age guy trying to get into fantasy (Tolkien, Sanderson, Hobb Abercrombie in the pipeline), half way through Brisingr, and loving it, some long winded parts I must admit, but it's a familiar story even an adult like myself don't mine experiencing again. Not everything has to be dark and complex

I read it when I was in my forties, I think. Didn't hate it and will read Murtagh, too.
within the last few years, as an adult, i tried to reread. i couldn't get into it, even after forcing myself all the way into the third book. just found it boring, plot lacking, and the writing not very engrossing. man did i love as a kid though
Imagine starting with Eldest because you didn't realize it was the second book until after you checked it out from the school library and didn't feel like going back.
Imagine saying E-ragon (rhyming with dragon), Saph-eye-ra, and A-Jihad for the entire book until you get to the glossary at the end.
That was my introduction to this series.
I love the inheritance cycle! Started reading it when I was a teen but definitely still enjoying it as an adult, and now murtagh is coming out I'm currently re-reading it all so I'm fully prepared. It is very Tolkien-esque, I agree, but it's a much easier read and very enjoyable. Paolini completely sucks you into his world. Great job on the review!

Inheritance was one of the first few fantasy series I really fell in love with as a kid! Its so much fun!
I'm going to read this as my dad wanted to lend me the book. I was just curious what I was getting into without spoilers and you've sold me on it!

Watched the film as a kid and loved it. So once I found out it was based on a book i thought 'why don't I read the book', then I found out there was a series. I started reading them in the army and I was so hooked on the plot and how much I enjoyed them, given that it's targeted to teens like you say. But I really enjoyed it. Yes the film was (very) lackluster compared to the books, but watching the film, I always find it much easier reading books when there's a film as I can picture the characters and what they look like which to me it helps a lot with getting through a book, characters such as eragon himself, Roran, Horst Sloan Brom etc. These books are my favourite easily and so glad I started them and would recommend them to anyone.
This series is a great introduction for new fantasy fans. i read it in my childhood and ever since i have loved fantasy. and I love the series despite its flaws.
I finished eragon last week and unfortunately didn't like it, it was enjoyable at start but i lost interest at the end and didn't like the ending.Saphira was cool tho.
And don't forget the amazing audiobooks, Gerald Doyle is such a good narrator 🔥

I still remember the final battle and the unique way it ended. Don't know about how other feel, but it really worked for me.
The magic system is also similar to Kingkiller, although it really breaks in the final couple books. Spoilers for that below, because I suddenly feel the need to rant about it.
But other than the elves being a pretty cringy power fantasy, it's a very good YA series.
*Spoilers for the last book.*
So the magic system works a lot like Kingkiller, where you can do pretty much anything, if you have a big enough source of energy. The crucial difference being that you don't need a link, and there isn't any slippage. So the ONLY thing that limits what you can do with the magic, is how much energy you have access to.
For the first 3 books, Eragon is winning battles and having adventures with what's essentially the power of a AA battery. Which is all fine and good. But then in the 4th book he finds a magically bag that holds a dozen nuclear power plants. It's completely off the charts how much power he suddenly has access to. So of course the villain needs the same magical bag, otherwise it wouldn't be a fair fight.
Except the villain had it for the entire series. So for the entire series there had been absolutely *nothing* that prevented the main villain from Thanos snapping the hero out of existence.
The series hammers home why Galbatorix doesn't kill Eragon and Saphira, but yes, there are a thousand and one ways he could have used his magic bag to neutralize them before they found their magic bag. All that thrown away to try and look in control by letting them come to him.
But I still loved the series, and I agree, the ending was pretty unique.
may I also mention the phenonemous magic systhem?
I won't spoil how exatly it works, but it is one where anything is theoretically possible, but the characters still have thier limits and it is clear where these are. Still characters often surprise the reader with a spell that makes sense, but you just hadn't thought of before.
The Inheritance Cycle is a staple book for me. I loved this book so much! I was going to read it anyway but this was fun to watch.

The inheritance cycle is the perfect balance for me of intriguing/interesting and also not a pain in the butt to read. Wheel of Time and other adult fantasy books require so much upfront investment and have so many plot lines that it gets to be too much for me. Eragon can be a casual read but it’ll probably end up sucking you in.
Love this series so much read it soo much growing up.

I was in the exact same situation he described, except I’ve been thinking about the series since 4th grade, and never got to read the 3rd. I’m stating 9th grade and planning to restart the series.
I watched the movie before I knew it was a book series.
I enjoyed the movie because I never had a reference.
Now that I’ve read the book series several times and found a RUclips channel that read through all four of the original books I can honestly understand why they only made one movie.
I have bought the first book today (Eragon).
I tried these years ago, and was frustrated how one minute there was snow on the ground, and the next there wasn't... but there was no mention of the transition and change?
You have to admit the first two books, especially the first one, cribbed from Star Wars beyond mere inspiration or just reading "The Hero's Journey". Riders = Jedi, Eragon = Luke, Arya = Leia, Murtagh = Han, Brom = Kenobi, Saphira's egg = Death Star plans, Oromis = Yoda, etc. I'd say the ripoff charges are onto something.
However, from the very beginning, there was enough originality to give the Inheritance Cycle its own charm. The bond between Eragon and Saphira alone is a dynamic that gives the series solid footing and separates it from Star Wars/LotR. And the second half of the series definitely comes into its own, and the Star Wars parallels get murkier.
So it's fair to say the Inheritance Cycle rips off of Star Wars, but unfair to say that's all it does or that it never evolves.
I just got the Inheritance series the other day and started on Eragon yesterday. Didn't really know what to expect since my only exposure to Eragon before was the 2006 movie, and for what that was I actually liked it.
But man oh man. I'm about 3 hours in and I can already see why the movie was considered such an awful adaptation. The characters are much deeper, everything about Saphira is way more interesting (and she's surprisingly funny at times 😁), and the magic system is now one of my favorites in all of fiction.

My friends got super into this series in early high school. I tried the first book but only made it a couple chapters through. Saw the movie shortly after and… yeah, it was awful 😂 but I admire the legs this series has, and the legacy. Think I’ll try it again during the holidays!

I think there is a bit too much excuses and support statements in your video, as if the series couldn't hold up to competition on its own, which i think it absolutely does.
My favorite part was the politic haggling of the dwarven clans, in book 2 or 3 i think

The Inheritance Cycle is the most fantasy fantasy book to ever fantasy. And that's why it's great for young readers just getting into the genre. It's also just YA Wheel of Time and you can't convince me otherwise

Never read these (i was 33 🤪) but I love To Aleep in a Sea of Stars so I'm now a Paolini fan. These are on the list.

Harry Potter introduced me to fantasy, but the inheritance cycle introduced me to world building. I read the inheritance cycle before ever reading/watching the hobbit and lord of the rings or Star Wars so I never compared them to one another lol

Bummed me out that the elves, easily one of the strongest, wisest and most hyped up races in the inheritance cycle, turned out to be all conjoinedly atheist believing living things go to voids when they die and their understanding of life is just sets of rules and laws. Totally caught me of guard, world felt so mystical and that kind of killed it a little for me. I guess they have a lady that sang herself into a tree tho, so that's kinda cool
I was twelve when Eragon came out, I still felt it was not top tier even then, though I did feel his writing improve in quality for book three. I do however think his creation of Durza and Shades was interesting and under-explored.

Yes, it's how Paolini pronounces it. Though personally I use to pronounce it more like 'Mur-tah"

I had high hopes for the film years ago. I wanted it to be the next Lord of the Rings.

I read the first book in this series back in high school, but never read the rest because there were just too many similarities to Lord of the Rings. I wanted to enjoy it but it honestly felt like plagiarism to me.

I disliked the ending... The choice of eragon to start order of riders in new unknown locations leaving everyone behind feels a bit empty. At least Arya should have come with him.

I disliked the end too. I was really happy that they were more dragon eggs and what not and I was hoping that eragon would change his mind or there be a solution and he could stay with the dragons.
I wouldn’t have minded if he left but came back to visit, but he said he would never returned. That upset me and left me feeling a boys empty too.
