Jesus Lizard (and Scratch Acid) were both bands that Nirvana looked up to, and who had been making amazing stuff for a decade before Nirvana started. I always thought that this single was part of Kurt's efforts to bring his heroes up with him...and this was Jesus Lizards only charted release, so it worked. Man, 'Puss' is the meanest strong ever, I can't imagine this band on any charts other than my own (and many of yours, probably...he he)
I bought The Jesus Lizard album Goat upon release. Shoved it down the throats of all my friends and loved it. Lucky enough to see them perform at the Outhouse in Lawrence Ks.
I partied with the jesus lizard back in the 90's and by partying I mean the four members would sit around a table and play travel scrabble while guzzling budweiser...they would ignore everyone at the party and just play travel scrabble...I watched them do this multiple times after shows...it was awesome!!! I asked david wm sims one time why all the jesus lizard albums were four letter words and he replied, 'you know the album 'down'??? triple word score...' I fuckin heart jesus lizard!!!
I have this CD ...in the most decrepit condition. Lasted thru my teenage and twenties doing lines of coke off this album. I have cleaned up the CD recently. Good and bad memories.
Haha that's awesome! I have a copy I found at a thrift store for 2 dollars in 97. Never did lines off of it but perhaps I rolled a jay? Either way, great split.
Trust me, there are plenty of Nirvana rabbit holes to be explored... I've counted and so far have found out there are 167 Nirvana songs. Including Bleach, Nevermind, Incesticide and In Utero, but that just barely makes up half of it
I know Nirvana where the biggest band of the 90's and everyone loves Kurt and everything, but "Puss" is clearly the better side of the split 7". Jesus Lizard's work in the 90's is as good if not better than Nirvana's stuff.
To be honest, I absolutely agree. The Jesus Lizard is an amazing band, on an underground level, they were definitely the legit shit, but Nirvana came up to the popularity ring, and that's where you need to define the range of comparison, you know? I love Nirvana's unreleased material better because it's just RAW. It's very rare and non-mainstream-ish. Both bands have won a spot in my love of music.
Chad Longview Nirvana has really good released material which is heavily over-looked. 'In Utero' is a great example. I'm willing to bet that most people who have bought that album since 1993 have skipped over half the album just to listen to the lighter commercial-friendly tracks (Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me, Dumb, Pennyroyal Tea, All Apologies). Don't get me wrong. I love The Jesus Lizard, I see them as the turning point when noise-rock and post-hardcore began to break off into their own sub-genres and some really good bands came out around this time that were way heavier than Pearl Jam ever was, I'm talking about Rollins Band, Unsane, Quicksand and Helmet. No one except maybe Rollins Band have anything on The Jesus Lizard who were of course led by David Yow's brilliance -- 'Puss' is definitely the better of these two songs, but Nirvana has some brilliant songs that are overlooked because when people think of Nirvana they think of things like 'Teen Spirit', 'Lithium', 'In Bloom', and the whole corporate-painted image of the "grunge" scene, rather than the much nosier abrasive sound which Nirvana is defined by, but never known for. You got to remember that for as much as Kurt is known for having loved lighter bands like Pixies, The Breeders, and The Vaselines -- he loved bands like Scratch Acid, Flipper, Saccharine Trust, and Killdozer way more. I also think that split vinyls can be very hit-and-miss, like Sunny Day Real Estate/Circa Survive or The Faith/Void splits.
+El Efoh I bought this back in the day as a big teenage Nirvana fanboy but the Jesus Lizard side toughened me the fuck up and cut me down. It is much better.
NIRVANA Oh The Guilt (Rare original 1993 UK 2-track split artist CD single including Puss by Jesus Lizard glossy illustrated card wallet picture sleeve - A gargantuan collaboration between the best of grunge and the rawest of noise-rock! TG83CD)
Its impossible for me to pick a favorite between these two tracks. they both just did a number on me...I'm trying to find the pieces of my mind, it fell into several pieces
Great to hear the original non compressed Nirvana song Oh The Guilt. Unfortunately the version on the 2004 box set sounds like garbage . Nirvana remastered has not been kind to Kurt's music.
Maybe people should actually study both band's lyrics AND how the music correlates instead of representing arbitrary dissent without any historical information.
Flanelshirt441 Yeah, my favorite part was when I said "NO U". I took a picture of the comments and gave it to my mom so she could put it on the fridge.
Saw one of these that was used at a CD store the other day. But decided to buy the limited edition re-release of Pennyroyal Tea 7" for my girlfriend instead.
i have wondered that for 20 plus years and finally just learned that... "The cover art for the single is a painting by Malcolm Bucknall called "Old Indian and White Poodle" not that that answers your *actual* question, but...

singko childers
Also the Wipers too budski.
Just keep eating?
Indeed.
Fuck the charts. Lizard rules
I don't know why people are comparing them. They actually fit well together as a split 7.
+SRsyndrome agreed. wish they did a dozen more. great pairing

Same but off the cassette case!
I had the vinyl on which cover I used to chop up lines of heroin and\or speedball heavy on the smack.....good days....
Nice. Same here.
I needed this today. It's like Nirvana dropped a new song. The last time I heard a nirvana song for the first time was Dive and that's been years.
Trust me, there are plenty of Nirvana rabbit holes to be explored... I've counted and so far have found out there are 167 Nirvana songs. Including Bleach, Nevermind, Incesticide and In Utero, but that just barely makes up half of it
these have to be two of the greatest songs ive ever heard in my life
The cover art is friggin great; For anyone wondering it was made by Malcom Bucknall, the guy who also made the cover for "Down" and "Liar"
Thanks for posting this old school shiznite! Damn that Nirvana song is one of their best ever. And I'm pleased to say that I own the 7"
brillant the Jesus Lizard song!
i had this CD when I was a teenager, wish I still had it. Haven't heard these songs before tonight in like 16 years. still awesome after all this time
yea man, the guys in nirvana were awesome like that, they loved to help out and help promote the bands that they truly liked
Must've been sick to drop a split with former members of Scratch Acid.
GREATEST SPLIT OFF ALL FUCKING TIME!
Actually the Faith/Void split is but this is no slouch.
fuck these are both such great songs. Oh, the guilt should have been on an album, same with blandest.
didn't kurt hate blandest?
@@davegsux he was embarrassed by the screaming in the song.
The single I bought for the Nirvana track that introduced me to David Yow and co. Saw JL at London Astoria after buying Liar and I never looked back.
Nothing like seeing a commercial for home deodorizer right before listening to a song about beating up a chick in a pickup or something like that.
This baby making music. 👍💥
Dude Kurt was so amazing
This is real POST HARDCORE, not that mtv shit!
icons bands
The Jesus LIzard was the first band I ever saw live. I'd forgotten all about them, and hearing this again is weird.
YEAH! I love this single! 🤘🥴🤘

I’m a little confused what are the Split 7”? Are they a band?
I have this 45, a fav.
made my list of top 15 seven inches of the 90s!
just went for a shiet and this is the gas love it
Same here.
NIRVANA Oh The Guilt (Rare original 1993 UK 2-track split artist CD single including Puss by Jesus Lizard glossy illustrated card wallet picture sleeve - A gargantuan collaboration between the best of grunge and the rawest of noise-rock! TG83CD)
Is that Harry Dean Stanton next to that adorable poodle-gal?
Its impossible for me to pick a favorite between these two tracks. they both just did a number on me...I'm trying to find the pieces of my mind, it fell into several pieces
Guilt!
I always found more Scratch Acid more interesting than Jesus Lizard and Flipper; but god bless Nirvana for lighting the path to all 3
Play my fukkin song, and that one too, goddamn it!
awesome video :)
Great to hear the original non compressed Nirvana song Oh The Guilt. Unfortunately the version on the 2004 box set sounds like garbage . Nirvana remastered has not been kind to Kurt's music.
girlswanted7 Most of the WTLO stuff has been leaked unbrickwalled and uncompressed. Including the alt mix of this song
Yeah, this sounds like an entirely different mix to me.
This is also a better and different mix of "Puss" than on the "Liar" LP.
The loss of the lighter clicks on With The Lights Out is no minor detail to be brushed off as if it were an erroneous artifact no-one would miss
Where is this music? Why did it leave?
went back to it's home planet.
Oh, The Guilt simply couldn't abide Drowned In The Sun
@@TheSewerChewer😭😭😭
is that a ciggi lighter in "Oh, the guilt" ?
Yes
Yup
Hate the way the took the lighter flick out if the remastered version of this
Nirvana's combined B-sides, trounce Nevermind.
he drummed on bleach....what have you done?
If you know what the lyrics of Puss are about…
I saw nirvana play this
Maybe people should actually study both band's lyrics AND how the music correlates instead of representing arbitrary dissent without any historical information.
Raquel Martin Actually both of their lyrics are about fuck you Raquel Martin.
Bleed For Me You can't make an argument so you lose
NO U
+Bleed For Me That was pretty good.
Flanelshirt441 Yeah, my favorite part was when I said "NO U". I took a picture of the comments and gave it to my mom so she could put it on the fridge.
Can anyone tell me why Puss is on the very best of Nirvana Album? the song kicks ass and im glad it there i just wana know why
This is from a split 7" between TJL and Nirvana. Nirvana were on the Bside
Dave Grohl on the drums on this one.
GET HER OUT OF THE TRUNK!!!
@Markoh2020 Vinyl is gooder
Saw one of these that was used at a CD store the other day. But decided to buy the limited edition re-release of Pennyroyal Tea 7" for my girlfriend instead.
YAWN.
jesus lizard was better hands down. what a terrific band...
+copsondonuts Hahahahah nah
Rick Baisden hold your tongue boy thats sinner talk!!! Jesus lizard is my spiritual leader. I am as offend a sjw
Both are killer!
big fuckin facts
I prefer Jesus Lizard, and while Nirvana are overrated, Scentless Apprentice is one of the best songs to come out of the 90s.
funny.. reminds me more of george clinton..
*The Jesus Lizard
And JL wins again.
bullshit dude, what about dale crover and burckhard?
Both tracks great. But wtf is this cover art?
Jocko Jonson I think it's a dog person tapping a Native American on the shoulder
some sick ass shit! thats what it is!
i have wondered that for 20 plus years and finally just learned that... "The cover art for the single is a painting by Malcolm Bucknall called "Old Indian and White Poodle" not that that answers your *actual* question, but...
That's no poodle... that's David Yow --> ruclips.net/video/CrhFc9pEi6k/видео.html
Malcolm Bucknall
