Mixed spice - in America, this is called Pumpkin pie spice
Thx~ I was wondering!
Oh, is that what pumpkin pie spice is! Thks Jane. I found some Everything Bagel seasoning, going to try it over roast cauliflower.
or is it All Spice?
In the 1990s I found some really nice shallots on sale at my local Supermarket. I found a recipe for pickled onions that looked quite straightforward so I decided to have a go. With pickling spices and a vinegar specifically labelled "for pickling" I set to. I'd also accumulated several glass jars, mainly from cook-in sauces, which were ideal for the job.
I handed them out round the family but nobody gave me any feedback. My assumption was that they hadn't liked them but were too polite to say so. About 10 years later one sister told me they'd been delicious, why hadn't I made any more? By then it was too late, my arthritis meant I was no longer able to do all that peeling etc.
If you're given homemade pickles, jam etc please let the donor know your opinion (good or bad).
Good point Val
Dear Jane, thank you for this great recipe.
Since I found your video’s, I tried and maintained a lot of your tips and tricks on frugal living. We are very inspired by your honest and open way of sharing what you learned.
I love being a teacher for 24 years now, but I must say I really like your teaching skills and we ( my husband an I ) enjoy your videos a lot.
Wishing you all the best. Greetings Go
Thanks very much
You inspired me to make this. Have to go and find a good deal on apples. So sorry for the loss of your Queen Elizabeth. We here in the states loved her also.
Thanks very much
OMG! That looks sooooo delicious! I was wishing I could reach through the screen to get a bite of that bread, cheese and chutney! I will definitely be making this recipe! By the way, I noticed that your cutting board was sliding about a bit when you were chopping your onions. If you put a wet cloth or tea towel under the cutting board it will stop it sliding about.
Bless you you're a life saver. I'm British living in America, and right now running out of green tomatoes. I made a mistake last year of giving a friend a jar of green tomato chutney, it went round her family and friends and apparently her work mates. They have all put in their orders. I think I might start a business that or hide out somewhere. So again thank you for this lovely answer to my lack of tomatoes. Trust me American relish has nothing like chutney. Blessing to you..
Thank you
Well done Mike, lovely bit of music editing when onion chopping was done. It finished exactly on time.
It’s not easy to do but he does well
You've inspired me to make some chutney again. I better pick the apples off the tree first though, I've been busy and left them far too long. I'm glad you've explained that you don't HAVE to bottle and can some produce to be able to store it for long periods. I've always done it this way and had to fend off numerous comments on my old blog, telling me I would be poisoning my Lovely Hubby ... he's still alive!!
Thanks very much
20K...hip hip hooray
Thanks very much to everyone for subscribing
Thanks Jane for this recipe I’m going to make.
I am Celtic from Galicia and we make quince dough to do like you with Chutney, we eat it with bread and cheese.
Thanks so much
I made your apple and ginger chutney yesterday it is delicious I know it has to be left to mature for a while but it certainly doesn't taste of vinegar as a lot of chutneys do thank you for the recipe.
Thanks very much for your feedback
I do enjoy chutney, even the commercial varieties. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for watching the video
Thank you for this recipe, I am a great lover of chutney, , I am from South Africa, livi g in the Philippinese and chutney is something they dont seem to stock, so i am going to make this recipe, enjoy yourselves in France, take care,
Thanks for watching
Sometimes I make my own brown sugar. Put sugar in a plastic sandwich bag and add molasses, then knead it. Start small on the molasses at the beginning until you get what you want for taste.
I wear a pair of “kitchen goggles” when I chop onions. I am always amazed when I take them off how much onion splatter they have on them. Your chutney looks perfect.
Thank you so much for your recipe. This has now become part of my canning rotation after requests from my family. I tried it last year and at first found the ginger to be too strong. But the flavour mellowed wonderfully over time and the chutney was a convenient easy holiday appetizer with cheddar cheese, crackers and sliced apple. I just made another batch yesterday for this winter. I'm in Canada and we use different canning jars and lids. That's fine. Everyone follows their own careful custom. I really enjoy and appreciate learning about how you use reusable jam jars. Should North Americans not be able to source our canning lids or the price becomes wildly prohibitive, it is good to know there's another method. Nothing wrong with a little extra knowledge when used sensibly. Thank you for your recipe. Should you have a variation or another chutney recipe, it would be lovely to see.
My mouth was watering as you made that sandwich! You're so fortunate to live where you can get good cheese and crusty breads! I used to have lunch at a British café and I would always order the cheese and onion sandwich with Branson pickle. I might try making an apple chutney for the holidays. It seems like it would be really good with ham and turkey. Thanks for another great video Jane and Mike 😊
Thanks very much for watching and commenting
I make a fresh cranberry and apple relish/chutney every fall for the holidays
That sounds delicious
I am going to make this tomorrow using my windfall apples. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
Thanks for watching
Update: I successfully made this chutney. I love it!!
Looks delicious as well as affordable.
Thank you
I've just made the Apple and Ginger Chutney today. I've got to admit to giving it a little tweak, I added 500g of sultanas, as I like my Chutney with either raisins or sultanas in them.
It's turned out very nice.
That sounds delicious, thanks for sharing
I've picked up in the local supermarkets a ";pate de lattes" which is like a block of dates without stones, which is an inexpensive alternative for chutneys (although not cheaper than free apples of course). It's also an excellent additive for home baking. I usually find it on that "odds and ends" shelf by the fruit and veg - usually there's lentils. dried fruits etc with it. With regard to Mike's fondness for dark chutney, I find the longer it's kept, the more it darkens...but still it's a big temptation no not eat it all. If we're lucky enough to have some jars after a year, chutney can be almost black. Enjoy and thanks for sharing!
I shall look out for that
Never have had a chutney/relish on bread -- the closest I've had is a berry-in cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving. Usually have mayonaise & mustard. I'll have to try a chutney -- live wild! 😄
Thanks Shawna
Wow Jane you passed the 20k subscriber.
And we appreciate everyone
@@FrugalQueeninFrance Yes, congratulations!
Jars in the dishwasher sanitizing wash cycle, all ingredients chopped and on the stove simmering. Smells wonderful. Blue cheese and bread ready for taste test when finished.
Oh nice!
I can't wait to make this, it looks so delicious. I love that you use your jam jars, I save all my glass jars too. Hope you have a lovely weekend. ⚘
Thanks Debbie
I have only recently found your channel. Can I thank you both so much. I have loved your tips and I will be saving jars in the future to give chutney making a go.
Thanks very much
What a marvelous Christmas gift a jar of chutney makes! Yours looks delicious.
It’s delicious with pork pie or game pie
Jane your chutney looks amazing! I bet your kitchen smelled lovely while it was cooking. I have never made chutney, I've made crab apple jelly. Going to have to give it a go. Thank you for the very thorough video. Might have to wear some swim goggles while I chop all those onions 😂. Also going to check if I can reuse any of my glass jars. Have a great weekend!
Thanks for watching
Wonderful use of the apples!! We got enough peaches from our 2 trees to make some jelly and some hand pies.
Peaches are hopefully my next project.
A few years ago I saw a recipe that used mixed spice. Ordered some on line and found recipes diy. Made some delicious scones using it. Looking forward to making this too.
Thank you
Love the new color of your kitchen shelf. It matches the green in several of your tiles. Good job!
Thanks, watch tomorrow’s video
Great video and inspiring I love chutney and will start saving my jars for sure. Thanks
Thanks so much
Will be trying that one Jane I love any kind of pickles, mustard or chutney
Thanks Pat
This looks fabulous! I don't have apples yet, but this is top of my canning list when I go out to the farms next. Today I am drying kale for kale chips, making jalapeno jelly, and drying up the last of the mushrooms. This has to be my most favorite time of year! Thanks for sharing what looks like a delicious recipe!
You are busy. Thanks for sharing
Your chutney looks scrumptious. Yummy. And on bread with butter and cheese....delicious. I saw on another you tube channel that you can make apple jelly with the cores and skins of the apples. You can freeze those scraps until you have time to make the jelly.
Thanks for watching and commenting
What a coincidence I planned on making some today! I may wait and see if I like your recipe better. :)
Thank you, we hope you enjoy our video
Made a batch this afternoon, thanks, you got me off the couch and doing something productive!
Enjoy with some cheese
Delicious must make that x
I also use jam jars. Jane, I use the "apple scraps--peelings and cores" to make apple scrap jelly. I just barely cover the peelings and cores with water and boil them a while, then strain off the juice and use it to make apple jelly. It's delicious! I have even used it as a glaze on roasted meat. Your chutney looks delicious!
Thanks Jewel
You have a very inspiring channel. I’ve kind of gotten away from canning and preserving over the past few years but now am motivated to give this recipe a try.
Thanks Connie
I made this recipe and it is simply delicious! I am going to have to make another batch for gifts ! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the feedback
I'm a huge Branston fan, but can't get it over here so I am definitely going to try making this. We had no apples this year, combination of the bad spring and then drought, but an old hedgerow tree opposite is laden so I've picked up a bucket of windfalls. I'll just need to get some ginger and then I'll just go for it! Thanks to your lovely videos, I'm actually starting to enjoy cooking for the first time! I've made notes, and I collect your videos in bookmarks, so can refer back.❤👍
Thanks Bethany.
Thanks for sharing Jane. Where is the best place to store the jars of chutney so they can last a couple of years?
My husband was watching too! We love fresh bread, cheese and butter! It’s quite pricey here, unfortunately, to buy these items. When we were living in Portugal they were more available to us.
Yum, yum. We’ll try this recipe.
🌷Sam
In a cool dark cupboard away from the light and direct heat.
This sounds fabulous Jane. im a ginger addict so will be making this recipe for sure x
Thank you
I was actually making a sweet potato apple bake as I watched this. One day I should try making chutney.
Thanks Shiva
This looks so good that I had to share on FB! I'm putting this on my list to make this fall.
Thanks very much
Yummy chutney! You can’t beat it! Well done Jane, I’m positive that tasted delicious!
Oh I did
one of the fruits I see all over in the winter here in arizona is grapefruit.. and evidently grapefruit chutney is a thing and I'm gonna try this year!
I love grapefruit
(But I have managed to make the recipe, in a smaller amount, just by watching the video a couple of times! 🙂 It's cooling on top of my stove right now...)
That's great!
Jane, Every year at Christmas time I make Cranberry, Apple Chutney to share. EVERYONE loves it. I would be glad to share my recipe if interested,it is very similar to yours.
I would love the recipe!

Put sugar and water in pot and boli for 3 min. Add all the other ingrediants, Lower heat and cook for 20-25 min till thickened. Cool, add nuts. We serve it over cream cheese and crackers. It is YUMMY! I gave some to my hairdresser last year and she said "PLEASE don't give me a little bit". :P
Congratulations on 20K!
Thanks very much
Looks scrumptious! Tomorrow’s job, I think. First I must see how much my ginger has grown in the plant pot, it’s had plenty of leaves, so fingers crossed. Thanks again 😉
Do you keep the plant pot with ginger indoors?😉🌷
Yes! I’m in 🇬🇧, it is in a pot and maybe it would be ok outside in the summer but it’s my first time growing it so I am treating it gently!
Yummm! I love blue cheese, and always have some on hand. I have no doubt this is absolutely delicious! And it only took one hour, time very well spent. Well done ! Thanks for sharing 😘🍃🍂🍁🍎🍏💗✝
Thanks for watching
I have to try this. Looks delicious.
Thanks
Another good one!
Thanks so much
Wonderful presentation for homemade chutney 💯
Thanks very much
Hi Frugal Queen, your chutney looked really good and I thought I try to make it. I did follow the recipe ok except one thing and I made really big mistake. Your instruction said to use 1 pint of vinegar and obviously did not follow the recipe well enough I put 1 litre of vinegar. My son came in and said straight away 'oh mum your whole house smells vinegar, what are you doing'? I would be really grateful if you or anybody could give me a good advice what to do. I know I probably have to chop another lot of onions and apples and so. I should be more careful and I don't think I will learn any more in my lifetime as I am quite old. Anyway I do often look, listen to your blogs and find them quite enjoyable. All the best on your good work.
Let it go cold and settle, the lumps will sink and the vinegar will go to the top. Then pour off some vinegar
Looks amazing have always wanted to try making some will give it a go 😋
It’s delicious
Thank you.
Never had chutney. Looks delicious
Thanks for watching
Looks delicious!
Jane in the middle of doing your apple and ginger chutney how long do you leave it before eating. Going to try your caramelised onion one as well.Got all my apples given next door neighbour has a tree they never use them what a waste. Great vlogs as usual kind regards Debora.
At least a month
I wasn't sure if you boiled the jars again after putting in the chutney or you just let them cool? Looks delicious!
No I
Don’t
I can almost smell it i have never made anything like this
👍
There are those who do and then those who don't and I'm sure it's anywhere in the world. In the USA there are a lot of people who garden and preserve. Many have a well stocked pantry, root cellars and freezers. Not all Americans are wasteful. 🤷
Great video it has inspired me to make chutney for the first time. My friend has lots of eating apples and she has offered me some, can I use those apples instead of cooking apples? Well done on the 20k 👏
Any apples will do
Hello Jane, I hope you are doing fine, here in Spain autumn weather has arrived and with it a lot of rain and wind. I hope in France it is better. I've made this recipe at the end of last year, when you had published the video, but I did not write down the meassurements of the ingredients. I've just opened my last jar of chutney and thought of making a new batch as I received free apples.
I've tried to get to your web but it seems it does not work anymore? Did you close the web? What a pitty, with all the lovely recipes you had there.😢
Best Regards! S.
The website is under repair, it'll be back in action soon.
Thanks for the recipe, Jane! What spices are in your ‘mixed spice’? I’m going to have to improvise here….
Cinnamon and nutmeg would do with some ground cloves
@@FrugalQueeninFrance I have a tin of pumpkin pie spice which contains the above. Will use that. Thank you!
I googled it and found several diy recipes. I was able to make it up with what I had on hand. Yummy in scones too.
Can I ask why you didn't chop the apples and onions in your food processor please? Chutney looks yummy.
That would have made them mushy, you want chunks in chutney not a paste.
I'm new to canning, saw that you turned the jars upside down, what does that do? thanks 🙂
It’s makes the lids boiling hot, the lids lose their heat very quickly. I invert them, then five minutes later, turn them upright again. When the jars seal, the heat makes a vacuum and the lid clicks down. I hope I explained that well enough. It helps it seal.
I’m am so ready to try this delicious recipe Jane!❤️
Thanks for watching
Hi Jane! This looks delicious. You mentioned one of the ingredients being called "mixed spice". Do you know which spices it contains? I would love to try your recipe 😊
Americans call it pumpkin pie spice
Thanks for asking that question because I wondered the same thing.
👍👍👍
Thanks for watching
Thank you for another great Friday vlog. May I ask do you also sterilise your funnel or do you just rinse with boiling water? At times like this I wish I enjoyed cheese and chutney, looks delicious
I just rinse with boiling kettle water
That’s great thank you for your rapid reply. You are inspiring me to try and make some jam. May try and see if I can get some brambles when I get home on Monday!
Can't find the sugar in the recipe. Watched the video to figure out how much. Off to get apples asap.
Thank you, my mistake. I will correct it. You need one kilo of sugar
Jane I've got an unopened chutney from Sainsbury's from last christmas(in the fridge) is it still ok to use? Lovely video as usual 👍
Unopened chutney doesn’t need refrigerating. It lasts for years
@@FrugalQueeninFrance thank you X
Hi Jane, I made your chutney this evening. Does it need to ‘mature’ before eating ( asking as my husband is looking longingly at it😀). Thanks.
You can eat it straight away but it’s better left a few weeks
You website says unavailable
Yes that's right, temporarily
I have powdered ginger, candied ginger & dehydrated apples. Maybe that will work? Why did you turn the jars upside down?
Sadly that wouldn’t
Er - unfortunately your recipe link in the description is a dead link: and I can't find any recipes at all using the search function on your website! ☹️ Shame because I really want to make this recipe!
We are trying to resurrect our website and will do soon. It costs 200€ a year to have the website.
@@FrugalQueeninFrance Wow! (Has it run out of bandwidth?)
@@oneoflokis no, we're not paying for it, we don't have patreon or anything like that and it's an expense we currently can't afford to renew.
@@FrugalQueeninFranceHmm. I wonder what happened to my reply to this? 🤔
Thanks for sharing your recipe and method for making spicy ginger and apple chutney.
What spices are in the mixed spice? Is it cinnamon, clove and nutmeg?
I bet that would be delicious on a cold roasted pork sandwich!
Here are a couple of cooking/canning tips that you may not be aware of.
To keep your cutting board from moving around on the counter while you are chopping or slicing anything, place a damp towel spread out on the counter, then place the cutting board down.
The towel will hold the board securely in place and help keep it from moving around.
The other tip is to help get the lids to seal when canning. After filling the jars, wipe the rims with a cloth or paper towel that has been dipped in vinegar.
The vinegar will cut through any sugary or greasy bits that might have gotten on the rim while filling the jars. Even teeny tiny bits of food particles or grease will keep the lids from sealing properly.
Then simply put the lids on and continue your process of preserving your home preserved foods.
I have the same question...what is in mixed spice?
1 Tbs ground allspice
1 Tbs ground cinnamon
1 Tbs ground nutmeg
2 tsp ground mace
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground coriander
How do I make this chutney with dehydrated apples?
Fresh apples like in the video
Thank you
But I rehydrated them before following your recipe.Should I put the water they are soaked in too,and all the ingredients you have shown.Since my lot of apples was dehydrated with the skin, the final result comes out a bit chewy. Please suggest some solution for this.
@@NeelamDangwal-wc6pp no idea sorry.
Ok,thanks,I'll have to experiment.
What do you all eat Chutney on?
Meat, cheese, quiche
Why did you flip the jars over after you filled?
It makes the top of the jar very hot and helps the seal. The cooling causes the vacuum
a lot of work, actually for me too much work. but thanks again
