I was lucky enough to see this lineup, around 1984, in Malvern, England. The sheer joy of music making was abundantly clear, from the first note struck. Stephane was like a beaming angel on stage and Martin's effortless virtuosity blew me away. The whole evening left me in a state of bliss, for many days after. Happy memories! Thanks for posting this.
Grappelli is a youthful 77, and Taylor a mature 20 years old at the time of this concert. One of the last times I saw Grappelli play was at the Auditorium des Halles in Paris in 1992, with Marc Fosset and J.C. Viret . The only difference was that at 85, he sat down to play. At one point, the sound system went down, and we were treated to 15 minutes of truly acoustic jazz. A true giant, who is practically unknown today by French men and women under 40.
Merveilleux Stéphane, sa musique, son style, sa générosité nous enchanterons longtemps. Au Mans en 1981, j'ai eu la chance de le voir et l'écouter en vrai, accompagné par Martin Taylor et Marcel Azzola. Inoubliable !
Well what can you say, I mean, this is talent of the highest quality, so glad I stumbled on a Stephane and Martin album years ago as Martin is one of the greatest jazz guitarists I've ever heard....and 20 years old here!!
Martyn is 29 here... I was a sound engineer at a concert in 1980 with the similar quartet with John Etheridge and Lenny Bush... they were the nicest guys...
@@GerryRed7 ....Wow brilliant, would have loved to have been there, yeah i did check that after, thought he was older and meant to edit, i mean i was playing that well myself at 29🤣..cheers Gerald!
I did the sound system for them in 1981... when The Maestro Stefanne , Martyn , John Etheridge and Lenny Bush were the item.. they were involved in a breakdown and were 2 hours late! My sound system had overheated, due to me having to entertain the audience with jazz cassettes. and 15 minutes into their first session performance was smoking! They took a break while I sorted out the P/A ... great musicians, good humour and respect for my problems! ... True Artists! ... unlike some lesser known people I have had to work with! ..
Great musicianship and they’re loving and enjoying it as much as the audience. Saw Stephan Grapelli many times and he always seemed overwhelmed by the response and applause, almost as if to say ‘what’s all the fuss about?’ A lovely guy!
Barry Watson Before I saw your comment I was just thinking this performance is brilliant. So two brilliants is definitely stronger than one but quite there yet.
May I add another AMAZINGLY Brilliant to that. The audience reaction at the end tells a story. Thanks for sharing this, what an incredible night of pure joy for all.
Love your techniques Martin in the days with Stephane. Reminds me of how much I love your album with Stephane too. A must for anyone who doesn't have it.
I had the great pleasure of experiencing Stephane Grappelli accompanied by the Diz Dizzley Trio at Ronnie Scotts in the seventies with my, late, father. So, it has been wonderful to discover this terrific performance of the old great playing with you, Martin. A delicious performance. Thank you.
I am your fan since this video presislly before y thing to learn to play guitar your are incredible and I discovered you thanks to the internet you are a Genious incredible virtuoso
This was the first time I had ever seen Stephane or Martin (a rerun on tv in the 90s) went busking the very next day for enough change for a Grappelli compilation CD...maybe one day I'll be able to keep up with it XD
So beautiful. I saw him in Amsterdam in 1984, the first performance I saw when I arrived in Holland from South Africa. He made an incredible impression and his sound is so romantic.
Martin, thank you for posting this great concert; it brings back memories of seeing you with Stephane at the Bradford Alhambra in 1983. I've managed to see you more recently of course, still playing better than ever, but how we've all changed over the years! Please let's have some more gigs in the London area with Alison, I've yet to catch the two of you together.
We can play all the Paganini and Weiniawski we want, but this guy has some serious chops. I've been playing with some bands recently, and improvising can be more horrifying than having the notes in front of you! And, Surrey with a Fringe on Top is just brilliant!
does anyone know if this was broadcasted on the radio (Public Radio probably) in 84/85 Whas there a program called "Live From The Montreal Jazz" festival?
"I'll Remember April" - a popular song and jazz standard with music by Gene de Paul, and lyrics by Patricia Johnston and Don Raye. It made its debut in the 1942 Abbott and Costello comedy Ride 'Em Cowboy, being sung by Dick Foran. It can be found in the Real Book vol 1. :-)
A south paw passes his gift on to us. The beautiful vocal inflections upon the sound of the guitar, in intervals, just mystical... would love to hear more of his capabilities in that realm. These chops, licks and see songs are just about the slickest thang ever. Thank you Martin and Stephane for autographs on my gold violin after one of your shows in Pittsburgh. At 67 now, I'm learning more about the history that i have had the pleasure to live. 🍂🍁💚

Martin Taylor was 28 when this recorded, NOT 20 !!
@@kevinmanns7170 His moustache was 20 though. Martin was always a very 'advanced' guitarist.
Lefty guitarist is Marc Fossett, and bassist is Brian Torf.
Stephane Grappelli...greatest jazz violinist of ALL time!
Merveilleux Stéphane, sa musique, son style, sa générosité nous enchanterons longtemps.
Au Mans en 1981, j'ai eu la chance de le voir et l'écouter en vrai, accompagné par Martin Taylor et Marcel Azzola. Inoubliable !
Can anyone better this for sheer ability and musicianship?? I have been entranced. Thank you Stephane and company.

Here Martin Taylor is at his very best - just unbelievable! He sounds every note worthy of Stephane Grappelli.

And Marc is tearing it up on the acoustic as well!!! Love this set!
really have to acknowledge Marc....some crazy skills and musicality happening.
This shit never gets old. The man was amazing especially at that age. No one comes close on the violin or fiddle if you like. RIP Mr. Music man🌺
Great musicianship and they’re loving and enjoying it as much as the audience. Saw Stephan Grapelli many times and he always seemed overwhelmed by the response and applause, almost as if to say ‘what’s all the fuss about?’ A lovely guy!
Man, Martin, that is some ferocious playing!!!
Brilliant isn't a strong enough word is it.

Comment passer sous silence une telle musique! Chapeau! 👍
This Martin's guitar is sounding so great
RIP Marc Fosset
Quel grand plaisir !

Here they are playing much later than I saw them. ruclips.net/video/aakS10OiNk0/видео.html
Fantastic virtuoso entertainment well worth a surge in views in these strange days of 2020
during pandemic
what a great performance.. remarkable
Very fine playing
Anyone want to see Martyn Taylor play '' I've got rhythm'' on his own...doing the lead, rhythm and bass??? Oh yeah.....amazing! Just look it up!
I am your fan since this video presislly before y thing to learn to play guitar your are incredible and I discovered you thanks to the internet you are a Genious incredible virtuoso
So very delightful
pure love and joy
Imagine having memories like that Martin! Wonderful. No doubt about it, Stef was THE best Jazz violin player ever. RIP young man. xxx
Thanks Martin, what a JAM. YOU GUYS KILL dude. 🌺
martin taylor genius genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Talking violin by my fav violinist

Que Maravilha!

The finest 'Gypsie' playing I've EVER seen !!
trop trop bon ....

I believe that Martin was ONLY 20 yrs old...incredible!

Amazing thanks for sharing! :))
RIP Marc fosset..
Gosh, Martin's changed a bit, hasn't he?! But then, haven't we all. Oh, brilliant playing by both, btw. Thoroughly enjoyed this posting. Thank you.
Grappelli smiles
Love it, thanks so much for sharing!!
30:51 😍😍😍
45:15 Stephan Grappelli on Piano - Satin Doll
cool
40:50 Martin Taylor SOLO Guitar - Old Man River?
13:34 Someone to watch over me - Gershwin - D / I've got Rhythm - G
9:10 Pent-up House - G
32:48 I'll Remember April
21:20 Surry with the Fringe on Top
Just to say, Menuhin and Perlman thought of him as a virtuoso....and he was just as good on piano
Also Menuhin had to write all his parts beforehand because he couldn't improvise
We can play all the Paganini and Weiniawski we want, but this guy has some serious chops. I've been playing with some bands recently, and improvising can be more horrifying than having the notes in front of you! And, Surrey with a Fringe on Top is just brilliant!

Pity Marc Fosset is not acknowledged in the credits...

Martin doesn't come on until Swing 42 - C 4:35

Good stufff, slicker than oil
Firstly, great concert....and now, pardon my ignorance, what is the same of the number starting at 33:44?

Anyone know who the bass player and acoustic guitarist are?
If I'm not mistaken the acoustic guitar player is Marc Fosset
THanks
I think bass player might be Brian Torff
Thanks
Brian Torff
Is Brian Torff the bassist?
That other guitar player was stepping all over Martin Taylor solo. That’s not the way we do it.
1980s
Why nobody talks about the brilliant lefty? Did I miss something?
Or is it arrogance?
Marc fosset. A fantastic player.. he passed away yesterday. 2020. RIR MARC
