I had a 92 KX500 and I still have my 02 KX250. They are both flat rippers but the 500 was stupid quick. You have to wind the 250 a little bit more but its still a monster. That 2 smoke just hits different all together. I'll always prefer the mixers over the fart boxes.
Riding the KX500 is like grabbing the tail of a shortfin mako and holding on for dear life. Too much bike for just about kind of riding but damn it are they fun. Love watching them rip out of those sand corners.
Both these bikes are awesome, this is what MX bikes should be like, but with 2017 tech! Always love that 500, glad they kept the rear plates and rear fender, it mates well with the 16 front fender and plate. 250 is very well done too. Good work guys! Even in riding it looks like MX, watching some Barcia earlier on on his CRF getting ready for Monster Energy cup it like yawn compared to this! I'm not anti JB but seriously 4t 450s look and sound like fuel injected lounge couches and I like 4t too, I just don't love them for MX, if I hear easier one more time I'm screaming like a 125...MX is supposed to be the pinnacle it's supposed to be tough why I have so much respect for older gen riders, Johnson, Hannah O'Mara, Bailey, Lechien, Ward and those before them! I know 450s aren't easy bikes especially on the body and in crashing but its definitely different and I still can't get used to it after watching vids like this and riding my own.
good luck getting parts for 500. 250is still easier to get. smaller piston works harder but can hold its own. 500 eats tires like no tomorrow. 250 wins hands down...
+The Dude is that why destry abbot only uses his 500 sparingly then puts it back in his museum. crankcases, heads, gearboxes, . goodluck im not talking sprockets chains, and easy stuff.
FreeriderMotoTemplar I know the parts are a bit harder to get but it's really not that difficult I never have any issues buying parts for mine....a quick ebay search and just about anything you want can be found in a few minutes won't be cheap though thank God for a long engine production run....but trying to find one for sale that runs isn't as easily done at least not in my area I see maybe 3 or 4 a year for sale in my area and they are spendy
FreeriderMotoTemplar one thing that is extremely hard to find for the early kx500s is the stock pipe I haven't seen to many of those at all and I rarely ever see one with the stock pipe still on it so you'd think you could easily find a stock pipe but apparently they are really hard to find my buddy has been looking for a while now for his kx500 he has an 89 and I have a 91
FreeriderMotoTemplar I've always had both 2 and 4 stroke bikes I have a old school honda cr 480 and a 79 Yz 400F one year only bike and I have several yamaha TT and XT 500s besides my kx but yeah man I'd stay away from them KTM's seen and read a lot of bad shit about those...don't get me wrong their awesome bike's but are manufactured with some weaknesses to keep them light frames and the triple clamps crack and snap from metal fatigue if you ride them hard according to some of my friends that own them KTM stands for keeps taking money....so yeah if I were you I'd go for a Honda yamaha kawasaki Suzuki...another point is not every city and town has a KTM dealer...so on those Saturdays you want to ride and can't because you can't get a part type deal
i dont get why bthey were so similar in performance, even the roost is the same which would indicate its not the fact that the 500 is loosing traction/spinning more either please explain as i have just fully restored a 99 kx 125 and i mean fully restored, EVERY SINGLE COMPONENT as im insane for details but i thought the 500 would have been much more of an animal
they were going for more of a 250 and 500 reunion bike synchronized ride they said at the beginning the 500 is obviously faster and they wanted to show something different so the riders tried to stay at the same speed
ah ok. but iv'e seen other vids where i'm surprised the 500's aren't that much faster. iv'e just completed a 99 kx125 and after riding it, couldn't imagine what a 500 much be like. don't get me wrong i imagine it would still scare the shit out of me, i guess the other vids iv'e seen must not show its full potential. not sure what the rev limit is on the 500's either because i think 125 is around 12,500 and 250 is around 8500. bottom end torque of a 500 must be insane.
love my kx 500 it's over 20 years old and still whips the holy shit out of the new 450 four strokes
Who wishes more companies made two strokes
Me🖒
I do I do
Thanks for posting, Got an '04 KX500 50 hours . Had it since new. They get along Ok ... First KX500 was a new one too, purple seat '97.

The Goblin is a Piece Of Art.
That 500 is so sick...wish they brought that class back out officially for motocross / supercross.
you can run the 125 s or the 250s if you want right now in motocross
i had both, 250 is ok but so are the Yz, CR and other brands while the KX500 is the fastest and easiest to ride 500 made
My two favorite bikes!

Wow! Your intro was incredible, respectful of reality of the unholy hell a 500cc Beast can unleash. I have no choice but to like and subscribe
You can really notice the power of a 500 when up against a 250

That 500 looks frantic. Awesome.
music to my ears
I have a 1999 kx125
When is the reshoot?
no doubt 2-strokes are making a come back.
Truth BeTold except they never make them anymore
The music is fucking cool! THIS is how MX videos should be done.
WHERE DID YOU GET THE BRIGHT GREEN PLASTICS FOR THE OLDER BIKE???
Great footage
goals one day I will own both
Smart going with an 04’ KX 250 there nice and as long as your fast like ole Ronnie Mac #69.
Two times forever

parts are easily obtained for the 500 the engine was virtually unchanged for a few decades

The kx 500 suspension is so plush compared to the kx 250, you can tell when they are side by side
The extra weight would help it track better too, less deflection.
can anyone tell me what gear oil they're running in the bottom end of their 2 smokers?
80-85 wt
Whatever brand is available
Maxima MTL is what you want to be using.
With some banana skins to quiet the gear and big end noise, lol.
Peyton McAdams 10w30 full synthetic

joshvhsle05 ride a cr500af then a 250........ It's plenty faster. Especially on wet compact dirt
It is like mosquito (250) versus a big hornet (500)
✊✊✊250!! (I have a restored 03) :))))
Restoring my 98 just about done in the shop having transmission fixed
My 03 kx 250 is awesome. Gnarly, turbinecore 2, vforce3 reeds, 11oz flywheel weight.
Cool bikes
