I was going to buy a collector booster of Foundations, right up until I saw the booster box game for the play boosters. Noped right out of that plan real quick. You saved me $300, Prof, and I'll never forget it.
Same here. I had opened like 5-6 booster packs that I bought as loosies at my LGS and 1 fat pack. Hadn’t seen much value at all. Maybe like 3-4 cards over $8. After seeing profs booster box game I was like “oh it’s not just my bad luck, these just have no value”
@@HollowdTV I had the opposite experience. I had a great haul at prerelease at my LGS. My prerelease packs were basically worth the price of admission, and then I got a doubling season in my prize packs. It's what emboldened me to consider a collector booster box. But seeing Prof's booster box game, I immediately realized that I'd gotten ridiculously lucky, and couldn't expect those results to hold up.
Listen, it was a bad box no doubt. Like Rudy says you can't have a box EV be at 300 with the prices at 300. These were massively underprinted with a bad box at $300. I wouldn't let these slip by like the Lotr special collectors which I also have 😊.
I do like these kinds of videos where the prof is just talking about random stuff more than just silently opening packs for the booster box game. Thoroughly enjoyed this episode!
Before finishing this, I predict that the Prof Jixed himself and he is gonna pull like a 300 USD Anime-Art Lenowar Elves in the special foil treatment.
Not hard to jinx yourself with all the b.s. going on in the magic community when it comes to card values! I don't see how every single person isn't pissed!
I gained a lot of respect for this gent with all the "I don't smoke and why" talk and then lost it all the moment He mentioned the Blue Sky echo chamber. You're still the most dapper MTG internet bro and i'll always respect that.
Hey @TolarianCommunityCollege I have been 5 years sober. I am glad for you that you've managed 2 months. Those first months are the most difficult. But I am glad you're on the path of recovery.
i like these videos more than the booster box game because i care more for intellectual discussion than just listening to music and watching a person open packs.
The most bonkers thing about this is that those jumpstart boosters are almost break-even in terms of card value per pack price. A LOT of $10+ pulls for a set where even the rarest card will show up once every 121 packs.
Are people just really hoping for the anime Llanowar Elves? I mean, it's going to be standard legal for so long, I get it but it's insane to me people pay that high of a premium for anime art lol.
@@Elfenlied8675309 The thing is I suspect the fracture foils are expensive because they're going to the kinds of people who get cards graded. Like those cards exist to get Pokemon and Duel Masters (Magic almost leant on the DM team when designing these btw given they work in the same building) and whatever other TCG collectors _into_ Magic collecting, more than they are supposed to be used as game pieces, so Standard legality is probably entirely irrelevant, at least for Llanowar Elves (which is already an iconic card, from Alpha, etc.). Doubling Season is being pushed up by commander players though I'm sure. Even the cheapest fracture foils are expensive, Think Twice is $90 and the cheapest one from DSK is like $55, and that's because these are designed to be the top collectables from the set. Playability matters but it doesn't _really_ matter, I mean who outside of vintage is gonna let anyone shuffle their deck when it has a $1600 playset of Llanowar Elves in it anyway?
@@MenloMarseilles They are coming down now, I think the market's caught onto that. I've been considering building an Evereth deck so I've been tracking that card's price, it was like £22 just a couple weeks ago, it's already down at £14, so I'm guessing that means a lot of the ones closer to the pack price are dipping below it too. Great for singles buyers, less great if you were trying to open value from your boosters.
I'm brand new to Magic. Started playing Arena when it was announced that TESL was shutting down for good in 2025. I liked what I experienced enough to start buying some physical cards, and, thanks to reviews like the ones here and several elsewhere, I decided a good place to start was the aptly named "Starter Collection" for Foundations. I also went a little crazy and splurged on the Foundations Bundle. $110 total on eBay. Seems like a good price for 350 cards plus 12 boosters and a few peripheral bonuses. I've also spent about $90 on singles to replicate my Arena deck in the real world. All that and still well shy of the asking price of this booster pack. EDIT: After seeing the monetary value, I understand the pricing a bit more...but as someone who just wants to play and not invest, I'm glad I went the route I did. Booster sets like this make cents, but they don't make sense--at least for someone like me.
Sorry about TESL. Having something taken away from you with nothing to show for it sucks big time. Anyway welcome to Magic where the same thing could happen but probably won't. Arena is super fun as long as you aren't trying to grind Mythic. The different boxes IRL are confusing so make sure you ask questions before purchasing. The community is pretty friendly and welcoming to newcomers. Enjoy!
@@mistere5857 Wow! Thank you for the very kind and thoughtful welcome! Happily, I've been part of a great TESL community and made friends from around the world after making it a part of my channel. In that way, I still count it as a win, but there's no denying the stunned grieving that's going on in said community. One of the biggest things I'll miss is the ability to spectate games. I saw that as an item on a MtGA survey, so hopefully they can include it at some point. I've been researching/playing other CCGs to provide the community with options once TESL is gone, and MtGA is definitely the frontrunner. There's been some troubling news about the direction the game is going (with the incorporation of Universe Beyond into the main game)--or at least the reactions to it--but like you, I feel fairly certain it will survive regardless. At its peak, I think TESL had ~9,000 players and always struggled to be profitable; it took only two years before the devs closed up shop. MtGA is part of a legacy with millions of players, so I'm hopeful it will continue on for years to come. And thank you for the advice on not trying to grind for Mystic! That's kinda been my takeaway after playing for a couple weeks. I can enjoy learning about the game (and there is so much to learn compared to a game like TESL) and trying out new things, but if I expect to, or need to win most of my games, I'm gonna be frustrated. (Far too many games are instant-concessions because I have to mulligan 3-4 times to get more than two lands in my hand; experience has taught me that going into a game with six cards/two lands is a very difficult hurdle to overcome.) Sorry for the short novel. TLDR, thank you for the welcome. It's great to be here! :)
I understandable why some topics might feel awkward or uncomfortable, but honestly I enjoy the Professor talking of things beyond Magic too in these videos and being more of a person. And I concur that the lack of it is a great part of why the regular booster box video doesn't have the same appeal.
Hi Prof, I still watch the booster box game videos, but the reason I like these more is that I like you and hearing you talk over it is much more interesting and entertainging then the pack being opened with just music being played over it. I think you are underselling yourself and that it has zero to do with the contents of the packs.
Hey prof, as many people have already said, there’s many reason collector boosters are more fun to watch then play boosters. I just want to put my vote in that category and quickly highlight my major reasons. The biggest one for this set is the higher “peak possibility” with the fundamentally cooler to look at anime art cards / cooler treatments (higher prices) that collector boosters induce innately. Secondly, having multiple rares in each pack also makes it more consistently entertaining instead of one bomb and onto the next pack! I know there’s only 1 slot for anime arts but still, borderless foil doubling seasons are still sick pulls. Higher peak + more consistent = better overall content. Good luck with the booster box game in the future.
I love that you shared your sobriety with us. I am a person in recovery from addiction. I'll have 5 years sober this coming February!! Great job professor!
Getting to see the Prof riff without filters is really nice and refreshing, regardless of the subject! Don't be ashamed to be genuine Prof, people like you because of who you are, not because of what you talk about.
Sold out here too. I am glad I didn’t have the temptation. But looking at the card list, there are a lot of high dollar hits possible. Must be nice to be able to afford to gamble on this, because I bet the dopamine is amazing. I think coke is cheaper and lasts longer though 😏🫢
2 months clean/sober is an incredible achievement, speaking from experience. I was heavily addicted for a decade and now 4 years clean, never looked back
God I love these, never change Prof! AND START TALKING IN THE BOOSTER BOX GAME! You could just throw out lines here and there and then overlay the music like normal other times, we love unscripted Brian here!
Tbh i don't dislike when a content creator explain/vent about their life, at end you are a human like us and when you talk to the camera is like a intimate conversation with your follower, something that sadly rarely to have now days. Don't be ashmed to talk to us about yourself, knowing that you are good prof is a sign that also your community is healty
As someone who did watch the booster box game for foundations because of how much I enjoy the set personally, I much more enjoy the collector unboxings not because of the contents of the package themselves, but because I like hearing you speak. I know it is perhaps not feasible, but maybe doing openings like this for the regular booster box game might garner more interest?
shooting the sh*t with us about never smoking, and drinking and stuff just makes you more relatable and human to the older audience that is us magic players.

@@mr.joshua6818Maybe. The boxes have 6 fewer packs but distributors are charging stores an appropriately discounted amount for the 30-pack boxes, so it comes out to the same price per pack for stores. Whether or not the actual market price reflects that will depend on how aware the consumer base is about the change, and if stores can get away with charging the old price for boxes in the hope that buyers don't notice.
If you buy a 30 pack box, you are voting for that to be the new normal. Make this upcoming set a Crimson Vow or MKM, and show Gougers of the Hasbro we have half the backbone the D&D community has, at least.
Bought 2 displays of Foundations Booster Packs for around 130 dollars each. 36 Packs in each display. I got 72 packs for less than your 12 packs. Think about that.
Prof, I got into magic recently and I love watching your videos to learn about it magic. I also smoke pot and was surprised by your mj aside. I wanted to say I hope no one ever makes you feel pressure to smoke or embarrassed not to! So glad you’re getting benefit from legal cannabinoids for sleep! I always watch the regular BBG and wasn't used to do so for Collector ones until I've learned you do this honest, unscripted heart-to-camera talks. Now I'll also always watch these if you keep them coming!
I know that the vast majority of your videos are scripted but you still make it feel like we are talking to us as friends. And then when you do videos like these, where they are unscripted, you make it feel like you're talking to each one of us individually. Thank you.
I work at a game store and we sold out of both the collector booster boxes and the booster packs. If you’ve got the disposable income to afford it, love that for you and no judgment! But it could never be me. I could never afford it plus I don’t like the fractured or mana foils 🤐
Hey, Prof. I also stopped drinking July 1st. I drank my entire 20s, I'm 29 now. I feel so much better and I am newer to magic, it has helped me alot to focus on something else. That's how I discovered watching you!.
Your pot rant was absolutely priceless. Keep up the sobriety! Desire is stress. True contentedness is when you can just be with yourself and your thoughts and be happy. Speaking as one who gave up multiple addictions in 2016.
Going dry is hard but worth it Prof. I've been off the drink for almost 3 years now. Those earliest days were rough but what's important to keep in mind is that every day without it is a success worth being proud of and slipping up doesn't make you a bad person or a failure, it just makes you human. What's important is to get back on the wagon when you fall off.
I bought a starter collection and a bundle because its fun to open packs. Actually got most of the cards i wanted from the set. The rest i will buy as singles!
I watch the collector booster vids as i like your dialogue. Its refreshing hearing your knowledge of old paradigms in mtg. Plus, its (hopefully) more likely that you will pull cool things, which i want to see more from packs. My pulls are always trash, so i want SOMEONE to pull exciting things. Keep on talking, prof. It is refreshing.
Commenting because of the Hare Apparent counter edit, quality stuff. Should have had the bunnies smoking weed though, just like the Professor likes to do. (19:24)
I'm at pack 3 typing this and I can confidently say he made his $290 back. Only a quarter of the way through the packs and he nearly made 50% of the price.
What? Are you suggesting your LGS is doing something evil by pricing a product full of sparkles and sunshine that you certainly don't need at what is reasonably within market price? What are you saying they did wrong, here?
In 2007 I was playing kitchen table match against a vintage player. I siad" Man, One day they are going to print a Godzilla card . Wouldn't that be cool? " He gave me "The Look". Now I understand.
Interesting watching what was opened. I preordered a Foundations collectors box for $195 (plus tax/shipping). I did not get my money's worth. Despite your box costing $300, yours was much better than mine. I think what I was most disappointed with was the VERY frequent duplicate cards. Looked like your box suffered the same issue. You got lots of cards in multiples of 3, and even one card you got four of. Sucks to get so many duplicates when there's still tons of rares I didn't open a single copy of. Oh well, lesson learned.
You talking is the main reason I watch these :) I love the candid off-the-cuff style. Also, I watch a lot of content while I'm doing other things so it's more like a podcast with a glance every now and again. A music-only one doesn't work for me too well! Interestingly, you see a huge descrepancy for prices in different regions, that Liliana is like £15 from a regular-type store and about £9 with direct-from-sellers platforms (so doesn't include postage). With GBP:USD being 1:1.27 that's a real difference
I personally enjoyed hearing you talk about Cannabis/Alcohol and the like. I’m an addictions counselor who has struggled with OCD, and my own addictive behaviors - so it’s heart-warming to hear how you feel about it. We want the human side or Magic Prof!

And it's going to get even worse when at least the play boosters (and imho collectors as well) will be reprinted for the next 5 years
Yeah, at $300 it was too much. If you get lucky and find something around $220, then maybe just because there can be some fun treatments
No 500$ elves pulled unfortunately
@@nathanlowe5346 Shame, but it was worth a prediction. It would been really funny.
Not hard to jinx yourself with all the b.s. going on in the magic community when it comes to card values! I don't see how every single person isn't pissed!
I pulled the anime llanowar eleves but not textured foil
I bought 3 packs at my lgs and pulled the fractured foil and full art anime elves
It’s very on brand for Prof to have rebelled by NOT smoking pot.
What a Chad!
i like these videos more than the booster box game because i care more for intellectual discussion than just listening to music and watching a person open packs.
My favorite thing about watching the Prof, is he generally seems like such a nice friendly person. Wish I had him as a prof at OSU
Hey Prof, Congrats on the 2 months without alcohol. I know it’s not a problem for you, but it’s a healthy decision nonetheless :)
9:41 prof reused to smoke weed then got hooked on cardboard crack instead
My thoughts exactly haha
Doesn’t he know herb makes the game even more fun than it already is?
$300 will get you 12 of these packs _or_ 72 jumpstart boosters (three boxes!) which you can actually use to play at game night!
10/10 on the edits for this video and just the fun off the cuff conversation. This video is a lot of fun.
(Far too many games are instant-concessions because I have to mulligan 3-4 times to get more than two lands in my hand; experience has taught me that going into a game with six cards/two lands is a very difficult hurdle to overcome.)
Sorry for the short novel.
They could never make me hate you prof, you're a cool guy, never apologize for being yourself. Our personal stories are what make us all unique.
The Markov Manner negative box joke got me pretty good. Almost spit out my "I won't talk about pot" third-cup of coffee
Getting to see the Prof riff without filters is really nice and refreshing, regardless of the subject! Don't be ashamed to be genuine Prof, people like you because of who you are, not because of what you talk about.
It's so weird seeing the prof in casual clothes.
With a hoodie with these skiing glove-like things
Late to the party but the talking is exactly why I watch this. Love the random talking it’s like a podcast with a little extra visual stimulation
1:47, I can't admit it, it's sold out where I live
Sold out here too. I am glad I didn’t have the temptation.
But looking at the card list, there are a lot of high dollar hits possible. Must be nice to be able to afford to gamble on this, because I bet the dopamine is amazing.
I think coke is cheaper and lasts longer though 😏🫢
Same. I tried tho!
Yep the store I work at is sold out to
Same. It’s sold out at both places I play at
2 months clean/sober is an incredible achievement, speaking from experience.
I love hearing you talk about more relaxed things, it's very entertaining!
Don't be embarrassed prof. I love your banter during the opening of the packs/boxes.
I am DYING at the Prof talking about the "marijuana number"
hey prof, as a local pot head watcher, just wanted to come and say I definitely did not mind hereing that section about weed, actually enjoy hearing why people choose not to smoke, as it seems more common too now. but just wanted to say don't feel embarrassed by your words, your an intelligent and entertaining person and we are here for more than just the magic!!! though it do help!!
Further proving Players need to buy singles, Collectors buy the collector boxes.
I’m glad you recorded this so early with only 2 cups of coffee!!! That was wholesome man, also….seriously….now I can sleep better knowing Prof is just a mere Mortal.😂😂 You’re the best Prof!!
I wonder what his opinion is on $150 for 30 play boosters coming next set.
Really? Damn.
Lotr was that price and count and it was arguably one of the better sets in recent memory
"Fifty cents! .... Nah it's the stretchy art ... A dollar!"
I hope I’m not the only pot head who loves TCC 😂
every time there's "high" fae trickster prof be like: what? i never had pots!
0:53 bros is tweaking, bro had enough 🤧🤧
I think we've all had it with WotC
Bro is commenting on bros tweaking. Bros craaaaazy 🤗🤑🤑🤑😚🤑🤗🤗🤑🤑😙
Prof's sober talk was dope, here for it. Anti alcohol, lol, preaching to the choir.
I always watch the regular BBG and wasn't used to do so for Collector ones until I've learned you do this honest, unscripted heart-to-camera talks. Now I'll also always watch these if you keep them coming!
I uh, might have bought 3.
Boxes.
How much did you pay each, if you don't mind my asking? (and what part of the world are you at?)
Dont be embarassed talking about "the weed" we love you and respect your choices! Thanks for the video.
K the merch looks amazing. But seeing casually dressed prof is something cursed!
Hare Apparent's pull rate is some of the strongest evidence we have that Wizards is Track Printing.
12:22 Lathril is… pretty good and popular🤭
6th most popular commander on EDHREC, used to be 2nd 2-3 years ago.
YeahI think it's now the most popular elf commander.
Nah, get this man a blunt. He deserves it.
Sober life!!! I hit 4 years of non drinking. Magic for me is such a great sober activity on Friday nights when I used to go party. I’m glad it exists.
I spent $260 at local store and pulled fracture foil Kaito
I watch the collector booster vids as i like your dialogue. Its refreshing hearing your knowledge of old paradigms in mtg. Plus, its (hopefully) more likely that you will pull cool things, which i want to see more from packs. My pulls are always trash, so i want SOMEONE to pull exciting things.
Keep on talking, prof. It is refreshing.
Commenting because of the Hare Apparent counter edit, quality stuff. Should have had the bunnies smoking weed though, just like the Professor likes to do. (19:24)
you are a treasure and I promise pretty much everyone loves you to absolute death and you could talk about literally anything and we would watch it.
I love the pot talk, good job
I suffer from substance abuse. Hearing your sober really means a lot.
1:40 I admit it, I'm ashamed, and I'm sorry, Prof.
I'm at pack 3 typing this and I can confidently say he made his $290 back. Only a quarter of the way through the packs and he nearly made 50% of the price.
I showed up early for class today
These are much more engaging than the typical booster box game videos without the talking
$375 at my LGS. Not going back. The Vault in Greensburg, PA.
What? Are you suggesting your LGS is doing something evil by pricing a product full of sparkles and sunshine that you certainly don't need at what is reasonably within market price? What are you saying they did wrong, here?
Genuinely lovely, happy to hear about your abstinence. I'm a recovering alcoholic and I found it quite joyful to hear you talk.
Tcg getting out of control
We need a reset on the MTG or we need a new game.
Just magic
@@mr.joshua6818definitelly. No reason to play mtg anymore.
@@solopunished fair, I recently got into Pokémon lol
In 2007 I was playing kitchen table match against a vintage player. I siad" Man, One day they are going to print a Godzilla card . Wouldn't that be cool? " He gave me "The Look". Now I understand.
That playmat is ingenious for filming these. It looks like the cards are standing up on a table.
I like watching these for the commendation. I'd watch more of the booster box games if you commentated through it.
2 months sober way to go prof! I’m a drug counselor and am happy to see you succeed. Keep it going
I very much prefer these videos in which you ramble than the ones where you just play music over the openings.
I wouldn't worry about what anybody thinks I actually love hearing one of the greatest voices in mtg open up about themselves ❤
In case he's wondering. It was Sunday when I watched this. And I paid $265 each for two of them. 😥
Just wanted to say, as someone who has little interest in Commander, I’ll watch any and all standard videos you’ll make. The standard shuffle up and play was awesome.
