Beating BTD5 Without Projectiles

- Ninja Kiwi has added a ton of different monkeys to their games over the last 15 years, but the one thing that nearly all of them share in common is the fact that they attack bloons using projectiles. So what would happen if there were, say, a supply shortage? SJB has already done this challenge in BTD6, but I'm one of the 3 people who still plays the 5th game everyday. So let's see what we can do.

Fun Fact: There's a random mission that makes you play the first 45 rounds on castle using only road spikes, pineapple bombs, and farms. Honestly one of the worst random missions because it's not only just spam to win, but you also have to use the worst item in the game - pineapple bombs. Speaking of them, objectively, the Monkey Ace's pineapple bomb upgrade will always be the worst upgrade in BTD5 and every BTD game ever. I will never be convinced otherwise lol.

Honestly, I really wish the random missions were a little more interesting and actually difficult. I've completed all 255, and a large majority of them are very repetitive and most of the time boring. I did get to learn some stuff from them like the Glaive Lord can pop camo. I thought that was a BTDB exclusive since it seems overtime the game started buffing certain towers like the ice monkey so they can pop camo.

Some other towers you can place down in this challenge (but must upgrade all the way to that path) is 4-0 sub monkey and village. I wouldn't count 4-0 tack shooter because its projectile is fire while 4-0 sub monkey's weapon is an aura of radiation. However, you can argue that the bloontonium atoms are shooting the radiation outwards, therefore counting the radiation as a projectile.
Oh yeah the 4-0 sub would've been a great idea. Unfortunately I do have the Pro Portable Lake unlocked, which adds an attack to it, but it's not really a projectile attack anyways so idk
@@Phenomix Slapping things should not be a projectile since nothing leaves the attacker.
If the atoms are shooting the photons that are the radiation, then the Village is shooting electrons at the Bloons
@@Phenomix the Portable Lake Pro's attack is only an ability and thus completely avoidable, so it's one of the few Pro Agents you can effectively use as just its base form!

If you think about it the farms Projectile is bananas and banana crates so in my opinion, farm shouldn't be allowed
I guess you could say that, but i mean this challenge wouldn't be possible without them and I think it's fair to say that a projectile pretty much always pertains to a weapon specifically. That's why I didn't use the banana farmer pro.
@@PhenomixBy that logic the sniper should be allowed because with no shrapnel, no projectile is made.
Sniper monkey surely? There's no projectile, it's just hitscan pretty sure.
I guess you can't actually see the projectile on screen but surely they're supposed to be firing a bullet in theory, so that's why I didn't use them for this challenge.

unnecessarily in-depth technical detail here cuz i got rambly.
immediate failure, if we're analyzing this on a technical level. spike piles are Projectiles. a "Projectile" is a physical object in the game world that can collide with bloons as well as use "Movement" (though obviously road spikes don't do that). when colliding with bloons (or when terminating, in some special cases), it executes some or all of its nested tasks, including Damage.
RoadSpikes is a tower that can only be placed on the track, and when placed, it fires its weapon and immediately destroys itself. the weapon spawns a Projectile with 10 pierce, which collides with any bloon touching it, every frame that the bloon is touching it, and which has graphics to visually show its pierce. the Projectile executes a Damage task (Piercing, 1 damage) on hit bloons.
pineapples are legal though! the ExplodingPineapple tower behaves in pretty much exactly the same way, but instead of a Projectile, its weapon spawns a three-second TimerFire with a pineapple graphic and a countdown graphic. after the timer ends, it spawns an AreaOfEffect with 50 Range and 40 MaxTargets, plus an Effect task with an explosion graphic (Effects with the "Explosion.json" graphic automatically play the explosion sfx). the AreaOfEffect executes a Damage task (Explosive, 1 damage) on hit bloons.
Bloonchipper is actually just about completely illegal! It uses a Projectile spawned on the target in order to move it. very technical exclusion though, i would not blame you for allowing this even with this knowledge in mind.
legal and hypothetically-at-all-useful towers for this challenge would include
- 4/x Tack Shooter (AreaOfEffect)
- the entire Sniper tower (no projectile, just applies Damage and StatusEffects tasks directly to bloons. the Supply Drop ability spawns an aircraft tower which itself spawns a Collectable that grants cash)
- x/4 Ninja ability
- Ice Monkey up to 4/2, plus x/4 Ice ability (the freeze attack, Arctic Wind's slow aura, and the Absolute Zero ability are AreaOfEffect . ice shards are in fact projectiles, but so long as an x/4 Ice Monkey never attacks, its ability is completely legal, as it does not apply ice shards to bloons... come to think of it, it would make a lot of sense for it to that. buuuut it doesn't)
- x/4 Glue ability (very silly option tho)
- x/4 Bucc ability (the task that spawns its harpoon is literally a "Harpoon" task, not a "Projectile" task, so it is legally not a projectile); _technically_ x/2 Crows Nest with the Specialty (grants camo to nearby towers. but like, just use a Radar Scanner Village)
- Exploding Pineapple road item
- Monkey Village (the Energy Beacon attack is a ChainTasks task, exactly like Apprentice lightning, just configured to only hit one bloon each shot. not a Projectile)
- Banana Farm (Collectables are not Projectiles)
- Mortar Monkey (no Projectiles here, just AreaOfEffect directly at the target location)
- x/4 Heli abilities (Collectables are, again, not Projectiles. Redeploy is also obviously not a projectile. just make sure the heli doesn't get too close to a bloon, it will fire)
- Submerged Subs (AreaOfEffect, not Projectiles)
- x/4 Engi ability (TowerModifier, not a Projectile)
- x/4 Chipper ability (the ability can stall Camos even when the tower itself can't detect them); you can also use it as a Farmer with its Specialty-enabled CollectCollectables task, i guess
Thank you for giving such a technical explanation and sharing so much game knowledge! If you'd ever ne down to talk on something like Discord just let me know, it would really help being able to ask you some questions for future challenges if you wouldn't mind. I do think that it's fair to say, from the perspective of the viewer, a lot of those things would feel like projectiles that don't technically count. Like I knew the Sniper uses hitscan and directly applies damage to its target, but the game wants us to believe that the Sniper is firing a projectile bullet. I was going to use the Ninja but I just couldn't find a spot where it wouldn't attack any bloons lol.

No towers is like is not allowed spike factory/spike shooter tack shooter.
That's true in the 6th game but I think in the first 5, everything is technically classified as a tower.

@@nicathenoob19 on a technical level, neither Mortar nor Sniper use any "Projectile" attacks, Sniper applies Damage and StatusEffects directly to the target while Mortar spawns an AreaOfEffect directly at the target location which subsequently applies Damage and StatusEffects. however, the challenge is meant to be moreso from a layman's perspective of what a projectile _would_ be, and both bullets and mortar shells are absolutely projectiles.
