    I’ve had a few comments regarding using split rings with spinners, it is an option, but I don’t use them when building spinners for 2 reasons; 1. I believe it makes the spinner too long, especially when using these Gamakatsu Siwash hooks. 2. I believe connecting the hook directly to the spinner wire creates leverage to assist in hookups. I could be all washed up, but we fishermen have our superstitions! Thanks for the discussion, I appreciate it! 👍🏻🎣

    I'm not very confident in my old style long point siwash hooks, so I started looking around. C'ultiva is apparently the Japanese brand name for Owner hooks.
    I tried #4 C'ultiva SBL-51 closed eye siwash hooks (medium wire barbless) for spoons and really like them for 1/6 and 1/4 oz. Thomas Buoyant and Kastmasters. I wish they were a little larger gap for 1/2 oz Kastmasters and Steelees.
    Recently ordered some #4 SBL-47 (fine wire barbless), #2 S-31 (fine wire small barb closed eye), and #6 SBL-35 (fine wire wide gap), but shipping from Japan takes about a month so don't have results yet.
    #2 VMC TechSet siwash hooks are huge, the same gap as old VMC 2/0 beak hooks (>1/2" gap). Had a couple fish hooked in the upper jaw with the point out the top of their head or eye.
    I think open eye hooks are tempered less at the eye so they are less likely to shatter than a closed eye hook. Still smart to wear glasses when cutting any hooks or rings.

      I use the techset for my steelhead spinners are you’re right about the gap, they seem way bigger than the same hook in a Gamakatsu.

Now that my wife and grandson started to show interest in fishing, I decided to dust off the trout gear since it’s easier for newbies. It’s frustrating that some lures like Rooster Tails and Blue Fox still don’t have split rings for swapping out, but oh well. I’m going to be experimenting with a double split ring technique I learned from JD this fall for salmon, hopefully increase that initial hook up ratio

    • @RAGEFISHING

    This will cause some lures to swim improper. Like a kastmaster. If you put a single hook on a kastmaster it makes the tail of the lure ride higher in the water with less action, and it may dive more when retrieved

    • @RAGEFISHING
      @RAGEFISHING  11 месяцев назад +1

      It may affect the action of the lure, but I don’t think it will make it ineffective. There’s no doubt it’s different, but I choose the welfare of the fish over the action of the lure.

    • @hudson24NY
      @hudson24NY Год назад +1

      from my experience, offset hooks still has the odds to gut hook. The offset can pentrate any part of the fish's mouth, true, but if they swallow it, chances are it will hook them in the gut. The inline hooks are more likely to slide back out if they swallow them and catch them in the lip.

    Thank You! I need to check my spoons and see if my hooks are oriented correctly. I will try the Gamakatsu siwash hooks, I had switched out using some very fine gauge barbless hooks from Japan, they are scary sharp, but incredibly difficult to keep fish pinned. It has become almost comic how many fish I lose while using spoons (even with standard trebles). Hopefully the hook swap will help. Any other tips would be appreciated. I picked up a small pair of split ring pliers at Wal-Mart in the craft section.

      If I am reeling trout in directly against strong current they are most likely to stay pinned. (reeling them upstream). I fish mainly with jigs and do not have the same problems. Sometimes the fish just won't leave my spoons alone, but if not above condition very rarely will I get them hooked and in.

    • @RAGEFISHING
      @RAGEFISHING  2 года назад +1

      @@evilmung maybe they are just small ones coming undone? Or, maybe your rod’s action is too fast (stiff)? Bass anglers use softer rods for crank baits so the fish won’t come off as easy, the softer rod doesn’t pull the hooks out as easy as a fast rod. 🤔

    • @evilmung
      @evilmung 2 года назад

      It's ridiculous, small-big, I lose them all! Just today had one one peeling drag and poof, gone. I typically fish a 6'9" XULT Slow Action with 2.3lb line. I am thinking it is the hooks.

    • @RAGEFISHING
      @RAGEFISHING  2 года назад +1

      @@evilmung maybe it’s the opposite problem, too slow of action so the hook isn’t getting set. For trout, I use a light power, fast action, 4-8# rod most of the time with 4# text Berkley XL. I don’t have lose a ton of fish on that set up. You’ll always lose some, it’s a matter of how often. Keep after it and you’ll figure it out! 🎣
