Yes, it was Cuervo Gold. Just a prop I happened to find in the trunk. And thanks for your kind words re: vids and PDF tabs. We harp nerds do our best.....
Actually, it's the 3-4 draw, with both notes bent a little, and hit REALLY hard. The 6 overblow would be the same note, pretty much, but an octave higher. So your ears are pretty good.
Well, you're exactly right here: most tabs tell you the hole and draw/blow/bend, but don't tell you either note duration or note placement relative to the beat (swing)! This insane. My tabbing method does both of those things. Hand-drawn, yes; but precise. See my tabs at modernbluesharmonica dot com ("the store")
Stay tuned! I"m going to begin a long series of YT lessons featuring my old vinyl collection..I prefer "Creeper Creeps Again." Great list, though! And yes: buy my CD. Ah: Jason Ricci's "Goenophany" and "Walter's World" belong on this list.
Adam, thank you for the lesson of the wammer jammer 5, that was a hugh task and you did it brilliantly. It's a song loved by many people, and those that don't, just haven't heard it yet. Thanks to you (Ronnie,Jason,JamCamp, and everyone else) and with practice, one day, I hope to be able to play it .. or my interpretation of it half as good. Thank you BlindDogFulton for your input also. Mott (Aust)
My friend: it was 95 degrees (Fahrenheit) in Oxford, Mississippi while I was making this video: the hottest week of the year, in early August. The car was on so that I could have the air conditioning on. And I did it...why? For the sake of imparting the smallest bit of harmonica wisdom to thousands of wonderfully dedicated players around the world, for free. And you? You MUST have something better to do.
Adam: although you honestly admitted you failed to accomplish the titanic work of teaching the subtleties of WJ having generously shared your knowledge on it through this series deserves a standing ovation, plain and simply. My respect to you.
I think that five videos on one song, even a genius-song, is enough. Fifty minutes of Gussow on one song, and you want more? No. You need to pester Magic Dick--or Jimi Lee. I've told everything I know.
Actually, I couldn't get that bend until I soaked my harp--this is when I was 16--and suddenly it became easy. It's worth trashing a harp or two this way to learn what a bent 10 feels like, then NOT soaking harps and doing it.
great discussion. Caught you at the bean. Jason is right, you are one of the top dogs in the world. Thoroughly enjoyed seminar and performance. Interesting watching certain dynamics on stage. Tough spot there at one point but you managed to make everyone look good. Class act to say the least. You and Ricci sounded great.
Excellent lesson. It's not always about learning it exactly the way it's played. Often your lessons contain little diamonds of harmonica riffs that we can use in our own songs, and when we just jam. You give us great tools, and new ideas. Well done, maestro.
I'm 25 and going to see J Geils September 11th this year for the 3rd time! And in Detroit where they recorded Blow your face out! I honestly didn't know that it was a harmonica when i heard it the first few times... I couldn't believe that much could be done and now here I sit trying my hardest to just bend a note lol. GREAT vids thanks for posting... I can't wait to dance my face off and party all night with J. geils again
1legmidget has a point. I dont think anyone would complain if you did more lessons on Whammer. There is a clear distinction between the 1 set of notes hit on the 9 hole and the second, which I have trouble getting, and then the really fast notes on the four whole towards the end can be daunting. As always it is up to you. I would even buy a lesson on your website if you did it for the last part of the song, from where ou left off. Thanks for the lessons
*** Heres a tip. Anyone who has the latest version of Windows Media player (Version11) can slow down music for free. Just click View - Enhancements - Play Speed Settings. You will get a little slider bar come up that lets you adjust the speed settings. Seems to work OK from the little bit of testing I have done. Cheers Ernal
Heh heh. The opening shot reminds me of a line from an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond. Talking about a guy who had found some jewelry of theirs, Ray said something like, "He probably traded it in for a bottle of whiskey and a harmonica."
Adam,I just was in fits when I saw the bottle (was it Tequila?)placed behind you.Soo funny but seriously, don't beat yourself up re this tune. You handled this series of lessons with aplomb and I would like to impress upon the other viewers how good your vid/pdf stuff is(just purchased a few lessons from the store and J.road from amazon).Thoroughly engaging and for nothing. Get to the store guys. Kudos Gussow. Sean
José Cuervo, huh? This series of videos is just awesome. It would have taken me and many others so long to get through the Whammer Jammer, but thanks to your videos we now only have to work on it. Next time I fly to NYC remind me to get you a bottle of other less known local Tequila! By the way, I tabbed Lee Oskar's "Before the rain". I got it right. Do you think people would be interested?
Hi Adam - I started playing Harmonica with your lessons - now playing in several bands (56 now, so started at 50 - met you when you played Jongleurs in London a couple of years ago - great gig) - been through all you lessons (and yes, I've tipped - £50 so @$75)- but just going through all of your lessons again - its suprising what you miss - particularly love the 3rd position stuff (which, upon revisiting, has got me out of a rut in 3rd position) - am now up to lesson 80 (Whammer Jammer) 2nd time round - Just wanted to say thanks - reckon you and David Barrett have inspired half of the harmonica players on the planet
How do you amplify in the car? is that the mouse with a 24V-110V converter? and don't worry man, we already love whammer jammer just from the stories and the amount of intention it gets on your videos. I started practicing it very slowly... let's talk in a month or so...
Adam, there is an ungodly note in the live version of Whammer Jammer about 2 min. in that sounds like Magic Dick's harp is swallowing souls and bending the very fabric of space/time. It happens when he drops to his knees. I think it is a 6 overblow but i swear he goes down through the entire scale on one note. It would make more sense if it was the guitar making that noise. Maybe it was. Anyways, just wanted your insight.
His old lady might break his balls about playing harmonica in the house, and how she's tired of hearing it. I do a cajon and hi-hat with my feet, and it's the hi-hat that drives my wife nuts when I do it inside for very long.

Thx Adam for the Story, and your little adventure with Whammer Jammer.

your a bad ass, I saw them in Concord , thats HOW i LEARNED, over and over

Good deal. So tell me: what do the various tabbers say about the killer warble sections, and what do you think? We can solve this once and for all.

I don't know that tune, but I'm sure at least a few people would be interested.
Yes, that's definitely MD howling on a downward death-spiral into the mic--THROUGH the harp.

He is me, and no, I wasn't. I was overheated, sober, worn-out, but playful.

Excellent question. It's Jimi Lee, and he has a great MySpace page. "Pocket Full of Soul" is his composition. My Space (dot) com / jimileemusic

Adam you got to messed up to finish the lesson. Thanks any way
Ne poussez pas trop sur le whisky. L' harmonica n' aime pas le sucre (sugar). Maryline
why in the car
