    Makoto Shinkai’s film is without a doubt awe-inspiring. Loved this movie from beginning to end.
    The moral:
    “Trust your heart by running down the uncertain path and see you’ll feel this sense of yearning you never knew you had.”

  • @TukaihaHithlec
    @TukaihaHithlec Год назад +15

    This movie does something unique where it makes the viewer feel what the characters feel. It starts off with a bunch of scenes without context, then starts playing normally like nothing happened. Because the body swapping feels like a dream and because their times are offset, they easily forget lots of details yet remember certain things in isolation. When the intro scenes come up in context, you feel like you already knew what was going to happen, because you did know, but not why. The music that plays when Taki and Mitsuha are together at twilight feels new yet familiar, because it’s the notes from the intro song played in the style of the date music. The only other movie I know that does this is Perfect Blue, which makes it just as hard for the viewer to tell what’s actually real as the character.
    Your Name fell into a unique period where all the directors at Studio Ghibli left around the same time, so most of the animators needed to find new work. At the same time, Makoto Shinkai had just finished his previous movie and started working on Your Name, so a bunch of Ghibli’s animators came to work on that. Around the time that movie finished, one of the old directors started a new studio and another one came back, so almost all those animators had regular work again, so they couldn’t work on Shinkai’s next film.
    The time lapse and doorway perspective shots from this movie are iconic. The director said they were inspired by Breaking Bad of all things.
    All of Shinkai’s movies have a few consistent elements, though Your Name changed some. Potential spoilers ahead if you plan on watching all of Shinkai’s older movies. First is trains. In the same way Miyazaki loves planes, Shinkai loves trains. Train tracks, train stations, and/or train interiors are major settings in all of his movies. Second is backgrounds. Shinkai artwork stands out because of the level of detail and lighting in its backgrounds. This is because they are almost always real places that have been photographed then drawn over. Third is connection. Every movie has two characters who either want to be together or reconnect with someone else, but something is keeping them apart. [Potential spoiler here] With every movie before this, the outcome was that they don’t die, but they don’t get to be together. Your Name was the first Shinkai movie to have lightheartedness, the first where they do get to be together, and the first with a new musical partner in Radwimps. Another element is that there’s always returning characters. Mitsuha’s teacher was from the previous movie, as well as someone walking past Mitsuha when Taki first thinks he sees her at the station. The restaurant Taki works at has the name of the previous movie in a different language. Seven characters from Your Name appear in the next movie, with two having moderate screen time. Some minor but still notable examples also include main characters having red accessories, and characters’ names often either starting with the same letter as previous characters or both names start with the same letter.
    Sorry, I think I got carried away with this comment. There’s just so much interesting stuff to talk about. I enjoyed your reaction, and I hope maybe you’ll find an interesting detail in this comment.

    Interesting miscellaneous information about Your Name (Kimi No Na Wa)
    Mitsuha's favorite animal is a hedgehog, and her phone case is a hedgehog, and when she sewed Okudera's skirt, it was also designed as a hedgehog.
    The name of the restaurant where Taki works is "il giardino delle parole," which means "The Garden of Words" in Italian.
    5:20 That teacher is actually Yukino, the heroine in The Garden of Words
    8:42 The ritual called kuchikamizake is really in Okinawa.
    21:30 Mitsuha was confessed to by a girl in a lower class because Taki, who had replaced Mitsuha, was dancing to Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal.
    24:59 Mitsuha was crying because she knew that Okudera, her part-time worker, and Taki were in love with each other, and Mitsuha was heartbroken.
    31:24 okudera had quit smoking but started smoking to break off his feelings for Taki.
    36:22 Mitsuha cut her hair because she was shocked that Taki did not remember her when she met him on the train. Mitsuha was not allowed to cut her hair according to the rules of the shrine.
    42:08 The vocabulary book Taki is looking at says, 「Have you ever seen Comet Tiamat?」 and「I am looking for my one half」
    There are many other miscellaneous interesting things. It is my favorite animated film. It is the anime that I want to erase my memory again.
    I'm using a translator, so that could be strange.

    Your Name is a masterpiece. It's one of my favorite anime movies and that's from someone who's been a fan for over 30 years. The feeling that you're getting from the anime is considered "slice of life" anime and they can be pretty creative with them that can match the quality of some of the best action and darker anime. That's the great thing about this medium.
    The first instance with Mitsuha was just him waking up in her body and the mirror part. Then it skips the whole day and it's Mitsuha back in her own body and people telling how weird she was the day before. The editing may have made it confusing but it's done on purpose. I like Mitsuha in Taki's body at the start because her speech an mannerisms are very much like a Japanese girl. How she moves and sits are expertly translated.
    Everything is top quality in this movie. Visual, music, story, character, twists! Love it. The feels this movie brings out is so wonderful. Great reaction!
    You're the only reactor that I've seen that noticed Yotsuha at the end in the classroom.

      Honestly anyone who loves this movie I instantly appreciate them because they have great taste. And I definitely agree with what you said about what makes this medium amazing.
      It's good to know that the initial editing of their body swaps was weird intentionally. I think that gives us the feeling of how they were feeling in the moment. The feeling of not being sure
      I'm glad you enjoyed the reaction. The movie was perfection

    I also liked that you paused the video to make lengthy comments instead of talking over the video and missing important points. This film in particular requires close attention to not miss things. Still, I think watching it a second time (or a 3rd or 4th time) you always pick up on new things you may have missed. For example, we see Taki fall out of bed whenever Mitsuha wakes up in his body. That makes sense since Mitsuha is used to sleeping on a mat on the floor, not an elevated bed. And you can always tell when Taki is in Mitsuha's body because he does not know how to tie the hair properly with the ribbon, so he just uses a simply pony tail.

    • @FrankFreezy_
      @FrankFreezy_  Год назад +6

      Thank you for pointing that out. Always love taking my time to explain my thoughts. It is a “reaction” after all.
      I’m definitely looking forward to my second rewatch where I can settle down and take a lot in. These are some remarkable details, falling off the bed and the hair tie.

    • @TukaihaHithlec
      @TukaihaHithlec Год назад +5

      @@FrankFreezy_ You can always tell who’s in the body by whether or not they’re wearing the braided cord. Mitsuha ties her hair up with it and Taki ties it around his wrist, but the other never does.
      Another neat detail is that because Mitsuha doesn’t wear a bra to sleep, Taki never puts one on because he doesn’t know how (hence the basketball scene), so later Mitsuha starts wearing one to sleep in case Taki wakes up in her body.

    • @FrankFreezy_

    My only issue with this near perfect film is that they don’t make it clear that a day has passed between the first scene in Mitsuha’s bedroom (Taki in her body) and the next scene where Mitsuha (in her own body) enters the dining room for breakfast. I think it confuses a lot of people, and makes people draw the wrong conclusions early on and I don’t think it’s meant to, but I could be wrong… maybe it’s all by design. Either way, it’s literally my only gripe, I love this film!

    A couple of things: the movie is filled with japanese traditions, but the most prominent one is the red thread of fate, something that unites 2 souls no matter what, in this case even in death. Most of the granny's dialogues are on that, basically. All started with the encounter on the train, that connected them with the red string. More on that, Taki didn't write his name, but "I love you", because love transcends time and space, whereas a simple name would be impossible to transfer. Only the red string could be passed, together with literal love. The name couldn't. The red string is the thing that kept in Taki the idea of Mitsuha existence and vice versa, even in the future.
    Also we saw that every woman in Mitsuha's family did what she did. Imagine how her mother and grandmother must have felt their own life, without fulfilling their "love destiny". Kinda sad.

      They did fulfill their “love destinies”. Each of them met someone who would ultimately help save the town from the comet. Mitsuha’s father was studying lesser known rural traditions, so he was compelled to go to Itomori where he met Mitsuha’s mother as the Miyamizu shrine maiden who shared their stories with him, and who was compelled to marry him. After their daughters were born she got sick but didn’t want treatment because she had “fulfilled her destiny” and was content in dying. Her embracing death in the name of the shrine caused him to leave it to the grandmother out of spite, so that he could pursue politics. His plan was to become mayor of the town so that he could modernize it and wipe out the spirituality of Miyamizu shrine and its influence over Itomori. When the time came he was reminded of Mitsuha’s mother and their stories, and realized that his position that her death pushed him to was how he would have the influence to evacuate everyone in time. So yes, they did all fulfill their “love destinies”.

    The reason her friend is surprised that Mitsuha cut her hair is because Mitsuha's family runs a shrine, and according to an old family rule, they were forbidden to change their hairstyle and were required to keep their hair long. However, Mitsuha broke this rule and cut her hair because her feelings for Taki were so strong. She cut her hair after visiting Taki three years ago, believing that she had been rejected. However, three years ago, Taki still didn’t know who Mitsuha was. i using google translate

    Some points
    When playing basketball, that was Taki in her body. This is why the boobs bounced so much - he didn’t have any sort of bra on (this scene is in the accompanying books)
    I think Miss Okudara was right that Taki liked someone else - Mitsuha. Despite never meeting and finding her annoying, loving her life, being her was developing a deep connection between them. Their souls were intertwined. This is also why Mitsuha was crying. I think she realised this, which is why she went to Tokyo
    You actually stated in the intro that they were looking for each other. We know right from the beginning that she is going to be an adult in Tokyo searching for, but not remembering him. I do t think Ive ever seen anyone watch this and not get so drawn into it they don’t forget.
    Grandma told him that to return to the world someone had to give up what was most important to them. In this case it was each other (he’d just gone to the past to save her, without knowing if he’d succeed or even if he’d survive), so if he wrote his name, she’d have forgotten that, or it might even have just disappeared. A declaration of love gets by this and helps maintain the connection after he returned the red string of fate.
