- Found the F350 springs for a really awesome price. I looked on ebay and craigs and called places and when one place told me they have some for F350 dually for $100 each i had to run over to pick them up, i even double checked in person to make sure they were $200 for pair cuz it was hard to believe. Best price found on ebay was about $300-$350 for a pair not counting freight or shipping. With the overload springs were $240 total. Now gotta start registration on it so i can drive it places and see how she runs and if has any issues at higher speeds and longer distances etc..

When u floor a diesel or push the gas a good amount it will always roll coal
Lift the rear axle on jack stands, put the truck in gear and stand beind to see if you see it wobble.
yea i might try that, i did drive it on the street and watched the back wheel in the mirror and didnt see any wobble at all
Oh man, I miss my ZF6 7.3! Brought back some good memories, appreciate that 👍
lol I k ow why you miss it now, it feels special
Also, after multiple 7.3s from stock to far from stock the amount of smoke will vary from truck to truck. There are quite a few factors that could contribute to smoke, for instance if your intake is old and/or clogged, could create a higher concentration of fuel in the mixture and create smoke. Could also have a light tow or street tune, but the 100 and 140 typical tunes will make smoke that is a bit more black than what was in your video.
I had an AT 7.3 and of course you can't select gears and lug it, it seems like it blown tons of black when I hits full boost at like 2.5k rpms. Clean intake, everything seems stock, any idea how I can check for tunes?
The easiest way to be certain would be to take it to a Ford dealer and have them flash a stock tune back on the PCM. Not the cheapest, $100-$200 probably but then you can be certain you're dealing with factory software
Afding more boost will cause the fuel mixtyre to get all wack and in return blow black smoke gas cars can do this to only reason diesel does it cause they have turbos that make shit tons of boost
I wouldn't worry too much about some black smoke on hard acceleration. it isn't excessive. A bigger problem would be tons of blue/whitish smoke on startup that doesn't clear up quickly. If you want to check for a tune, I think the 2001's can't be flashed like newer trucks, they require a chip be installed in the back of the pcm. Some chips have a selector switch that allows you to go between tunes, but some older more basic chips were one setting all the time. Basically more fuel and timing adjustments. To check look on the back of the pcm and find the access door. I think factory has a tamper-evident seal tape over to protect warranty. If it has been broken it is possible you have a chip in there. In that case if you want it stock you would have to buy a stock chip.
That amount is normal on an 01 if it were tuned it would be more Normal driving it seemed to be minor
I love this!
I wrecked my 2015 F350 last year, Christmas morning. It’s in pretty bad shape. Front axle bent, entire passenger side has severe damage. Frame is still strait, I hope.
I plan to get a pair of F450 axles and restore the truck little by little. I’m gonna start uploading videos once I buy the axles. Keep up the good work, it’s motivating me to get my build going too!
Thx bro, anything is doable if you are willing
The black smoke is natural I have a 08 f350 super duty with a performance tune and it rolls coal like no tomorrow
But with no tue tho? Seems crazy much
FixItNick I use to have a 7.3 before I got the 6.4 and it smoked too and it was a stock tune in it and also look under the truck and see if you see a DPF filter cause after I had that removed and the tune to know that it was removed it would smoke more than it use too
its a 2001 it doesn't have DEF
And no restrictions
Jay Reynolds yeah it's just rolling coal
Oh my Lord, you make me want to go out there and get in my truck and ride to the neighborhood. That looks like fun. I wish my truck was a stick shift. Honest, if I ever hit a big lottery I'll have 20 of those trucks in the garage somewhere. Just saving them. Will love them so much. Thanks for the awesome videos. You're doing a great job putting that bad boy together.
It’s a big girl!! Lol the stick is such a wonderful thing, 4” exhaust with a tune will be a dream I bet
Keep changing the filter and normal maintenance and that truck will go for another 20 years! Lol! I think your in good shape!
ok sounds good, will take care of her, shes a keeper
After watching the video's, first off I wouldn't' do the CCV mod just my 2 cent's worth. I would take it too a professional alignment shop too verify the rear end is straight and true, as far as the smoke I've got no smoke with my stock F-350 dually, my tuned F-250 will smoke some when getting on the throttle hard. Whomever owned the truck prior too you shopped at Costco, because of the trash in the cab, and the one battery being a Interstate.
Yea will be taking it to alignment, will be interesting to see what it should be and what I have, I'll prob take in after 2" level kit install. Why not CCV mod? I don't want to run oil back into Intake and turbo, vented is fine
International designed it that way, I know Bill at Powerstroke help some people don't like but here is his reason.
ruclips.net/video/4Qu2-Dr3jF8/видео.html
yea i saw his vid before, but ill be doing it in order to keep the engine bay spottless, i guess if a turn goes, turbo goes, but it shouldnt go anytime soon, i ran it on another f250 7.3 before.
Greetings from Russia. I understand English fluently, but it's still interesting to watch. I love American trucks!
Thank brother :)
Its a diesel pre-DPF totally normal for a diesel to have a bit of black smoke when low in RPM and fueling up.
got it, ok good lol
Just to say, our diesel toyota preview blew out loads of smoke when we first got it. Usually when it's not been used for a while, and again when we bought a diesel opal zafira.
K I’ll have to start using it I guess lol
Pre emissions diesels often smoked because there’s no government mandated crap holding the soot back. Likely nothing to worry about.
got it thx
If the tires don't wobble when they rotate on jack stands, from behind, sight down along the sidewall looking forward, measure where it passes beyond the front tire. Body shop with a 20 ton puller can tweak the axle housing for a couple bucks.
I'll ask around some machine shops maybe
or if you're feeling adventurous, you could use a chain and a 30 ton bottle jack and maybe a little heat
Black smoke ca caused by multiple issues
1. most common
too much carbon deposits in intake manifolds, throttle flap, EGR pipe that right with intake.
2. bad injector or injector seal ring(copper)
some of the bad injectors are making bad ticking noise but some other don't.
Just a smoke in some cases.
injector seals are have to replaced every 35000~30000 miles as i think. And they actually blows up!
nothing happens on idle, but making severe blow-by on full boost.
3. bad filters
dirty intake filter can cause smoke,
dirty fuel filter can cause smoke.
intake filter seemed dirty at your last video.
#1 maybe, #2 it would be more white smoke and loss of power, it creates good power during black smoke. #3 air filter is new but gotta do fuel filter change.
Injector. White smoke would be a turbo issue.
#fixitnick
White smoke caused by 'completely' unburned diesel
Or
Engine oil burning.
So, bad(not dead) injector causes black smoke
While its running, take the oilfill cap off and if theres alot of blow by, smoke coming out of the oilfill then it needs rings. If not somebody might of messed with the injection pump or its goin bad
not much blow by at all. I think ill just keep working on it, and keep cleaning and changing things, after drive it for a while see if it all improves
I forgot to mention to check your boost sensor hose for cracks. Check the boost sensor PID and max boost on am7.3 should be 23-26 psi. Under hard load.
Was going to strip engine, change clamps, clean up to catch new leaks, install boos gauge, van steps lol
I’m not a ford guy by any means but I would assume in some way that the truck isn’t stock (air or fuel tuning wise in someway), I wouldn’t worry about it tho just me. If it has codes check the codes and research the forums if the codes are related to modifications or something actually wrong.
Didn't see any coders and all seems to be stock, not sure how to check tunes
I see why you got that truck. Manual trans. Way funner to drive. Nice.
I had an auto 7.3 f250 it was boring without tune, this one is actually fun without a tune being a stick
The black smoke is a little excessive for stock 7.3. You are not building boost fast enough on initial acceleration. Even on a light lug on the engine it is way too much. Smoke test your intercooler for leaks. Check the grommets on the CAC (Charge Air Cooler) pipes. They are known to split on the hot side. Iff all looks good on the intercooler and pipes, check turbo for, excessive play in bearing. If that is ok perform and compression is ok, it might be time for injectors or and injector “O” rings. Use a scanner and monitor your boost and exhaust back pressure and IPR pods when you load it in second gear. If your IPR is stable your not alll over the place, the IPR is working correctly and no oil foaming or, leaks are present. I hope this helps. I’ve owned 10,of these truck. Also a Ford Diesel tech.
Thx brother, stick around if have time, will be doing lots of work on this girl, don't know much about 7.3 but will try to study up
FixItNick no problem. Just hit me up with any questions. These trucks are solid. This will make great daily driver for you.
FixItNick if you do plan on keeping the truck i would buy a scan tool it's called BAFX obd2 diagnostic interface you can get it from amazon and it works with a laptop or tablet and download car guage pro this scan tool does quite a bit it even does a buzz test on your Injectors if you ever needed too
One way to find out if it has a chip take off the kick panel on the driver side and get a flash light and look at a Silver long square box if you see a flat chip sticking out of it then obviously you have one
Plastic is not cut out, I'll have to pull it out I guess
Do u keep all the cars u fix !? I love fixitnick!!!!!
thanks bro, no i dont, i rotate vehicles maybe 1-2 times a year, depends on what i get and what i find next. This f350 i might keep for a long time tho, the Transit van we are keeping for flower business also, but i really really want to find a GT350 to build up
What size were those bolts you bought for the spring hanger? I've been trying to replace my bushings, but I can't get the bolts out so I will probably have to grind those rivets off.
It must be nice living in places like California. I live in Illinois and the road salt will rust your vehicle like there is no tomorrow. Even the humidity in the air will cause it to rust. I've seen 2016 trucks and once a 2017 with rust on every surface that had no rust preventative. Compared to California cars can pretty much sit outside and pretty much no rust.
Yea it’s nice, I only try to buy CA cars
The south is Car Nation. Well, depends. Texas, you see a lot of big vehicles. Florida, South and North Carolina, lots of pickups and classic cars. Not sure about other states.
Might have a mild tune. Otherwise lugging down a Manual 7.3 will produce some smoke. It could also be a restriction in the turbo (dirty air filter or just worn out (check turbo wheel for play or chips in wheel)) or exhaust (manual 7.3 might have a catalytic converter, could be clogged). Find someone who can flash the computer for you with the most updated “stock” file and you should be good to go if there is no other issues! Will continue following the build and subbed!!!!! P.S. having an exhaust leak can also cause black smoke on a stock tune, my 7.3 had a leaking manifold and turbo up-pipe donuts that caused black smoke on the stock tune! Good luck!
Filter is new and clean, lugging I can see that since I was taking off in 2nd, technically 3rd since first is low gear. Any idea how I can check for tunes?
FixItNick Hook up a good scanner to the OBD II port and see if there are codes like P1249 (wastegate or turbo overboost) P1211 (icp uncontrollable)or P0408 (exhaust flow) these are all good indicators of having a tune. 👍🏻
Jensen LeBlanc copy that, will give it a scan and see what I get
FixItNick let us know what u find out
Plugged in scanner, says no codes stored on the vehicle, but the batteries were dead for a while when I got the truck and I think you have to drive for about 50 miles to get the system back to normal, so I'll have to do it again soon
That left rear axle tube looks bent as heck take it to an alignment shop have it checked man!
I measured the tubes ate straight but I think where rotor is mounted 1/4" off, I'll see how it drives and if eats tires then decide if should swap rear
That is because your Turbo has not equalised with the engine and it dose not get enough air so It burns more fuel
Or gets to much fuel?
You are one of RUclips's best
Drewski 1225 thx lol but surely not best
Dont even worry about it diesel trucks always smoke no matter what
If runs good and has no issues it's more fun haha
I have had 4 7.3 trucks 6 speed and auto and the best chip look it up think it's $190 on Amazon but it's called T.S. 6 position chip easy to install and makes a big difference and can change anytime from stock tune to +140hp
Thx , if I have a tune would that effect new tune install?
FixItNick no it would not you are good to go.
Any other 7.3 questions hit me up anytime I'm in Clearwater Florida
Should remove the axle shafts to check if it's just the flange that's bent - I doubt it's the whole rear axle.
Yea I was going to do that soon after finish up paperwork and certificates etc
u bought a 7.3l powerstroke, they all smoke some under hard acceleration or just sitting there reving it. Its a diesel, what can u expect. it sounds healthy
Yea it sounds good, just black smoke seemed to much I thought
Check for an egr delete. I have a 6.0 and it smokes with a stock exhaust only becuz of the egr delete. Im blessed to be in Texas where they dont do a smog test on diesel trucks :)
These don't have EGR I think
7.3’s don’t have egr’s that’s the reason they had to stop using them because of too much emissions
Not a toyota preview, but a Previa.
You have a tune that plugs into the odb2 port and programs the ecu Diablo I think that's what's on your truck now
Anyway to know what I have and how to put it in stock mode?
FixItNick would have to get it from previous owner : ( I promise you will fall in love with ts 6 position chip because you can put it back to stock while driving if you want.
Driver side tire is Bent top out
Some time with diesels if it is not pushed on a lot or if it sits for a while it will smoke so it just might need to be run and blown out.
I guess gotta install straight pipe lol
It a diesel they roll coal naturly and when you rev it a couple times you put more fuel in the ingeters and the smoke is the exes fuel
Yea makes sense, and also lugging in 2nd or third gear would do that
I wish my grass was as dead as yours!!! So jealous
Hahah why? I actually like it cu I don't have to mow it now, but after a few rainy days it starts to growing green and looks good lol
simple.. take it in for a 4 wheel alignment $100 bucks well spent...
yea i was gonna go to alignment, but before i do i was going to try a few more experiments.
Did you reuse the u-bolts? Its not a safe idea to reuse u-bolts, because they're torqued to the point of stretching the threads (when torquing them properly). You should always cut off the old ones and replace them with new, when needing to remove them.
Reusing U bolts is fine, i have reused them since 2000 on muscle cars and lifted trucks, they can be reused.
You may have been lucky, but that's not a standard I would recommend. Here's a good video covering why its an unsafe practice to reuse u-bolts.
ruclips.net/video/4NKnoBz11WE/видео.html
I've actually seen u-bolts fail on both stock and lifted trucks, so I would never trust a used u-bolt.
It's definitely smoking when you get into it but there shouldn't be that much unless there is a tune or something is wrong. I owned a 7.3 but I'm no diesel mechanic
Yea gonna try figure out if has any tunes
FixItNick sounds good man good luck with the truck. I'll stay tuned in for the vids
Thx, I'm making a list of things to keep track of things did and to do
I’ve never had a 7.3l but I believe for the year of that truck there wasn’t ecm tuning available. If it’s tuned I would believe you should be able to see a inline programmer plugged into your wiring somewhere example: TS performance box or a Edge JWA something like that. The little amount of smoke that thing is putting out looks normal to me.
They do have ECM option and the OBD2 plug in type, I'll look into more once get paperwork started
Same on passenger top bent out
Hey I am a new subscriber I am a huge 7.3 fan plz find some fenders on It love the vids thanks man
Thanks bro, will try to use these for now till I find good ones in white.
She’s an old girl that’s just her blowing off steam lol
haha true, i gotta let her break more with a 4" straight pipe, intake and tune, then delete a bunch of useless junk lol
Fixitnick its normal. My truck does the same at high rpm
alright good to know lol
I'm wondering if your turbo might be going bad. Because of it smoking a bit and 7.3 turbos are known for screaming
I'll have to see if it spins good and if any play in the wheel
Good deal. Let me know how it is
K, I'll prob make a vid of some tear down and cleaning, want that engine spotless to catch new leaks
Dope
hay man leve the ferders off and put 20x12 37s and it would look sick and tint
Haha tint yes, 37s not gonna fit, needs lift
Rollin coal . as soon as the turbo spools you definitely rollin coal . I would drive it for a while first and see what happens . Never know it could have been some dude that never got into it so its all backed up. Kick that thing in the ass on the highway. Love your videos PHILADELPHIA HERE !!
Thx bro, yea maybe, I'll get papers started and hit the road. Wanna put in 4" straight pipe and Intake and tune lol
FixItNick my buddy put straight pipe in his 7.3. Sounds really good and surprisingly is not crazy loud sounds just right . You should get the d b. Tuner for it. Plugs into obd2 and has a screen like a GPS. Makes a world of difference
DP tuner? havent heard of the d b tuner, i cant wait to tune it
FixItNick look up d p tuner . They make a few different models . It definitely works great just plugs into obd2 and has a touchscreen like a GPS. Where you can adjust and modify driving power when turbo kicks in . How and when it shifts. Ect. Google it. . You gonna love it trust me !!!!! Great bang 4 your buck .
dassme1 I had DP tuner before, I'll likely go with hydra this time, i hear it's safer with timing
It's a Turbo diesel it's supposed to Have black smoke
But that much tho??
All diesels smoke a tad... Stock. Well not any of the newer stuff. Lol
I'm wondering if you have stock fuel injectors if not then that would cause it to smoke because I have the same truck but mine is a 96 and it doesn't smoke or it could be that it sat for quite some time and that would cause that too
It's possible but why would anyone put bigger injectors on stock truck?
FixItNick more horse power and better fuel economy
take it to a wheel alighnment shop get it checked out
yea i will
As someone that does this all day every day for a job. YOU scare the shit out of me. Working in flipflops. Cutting the wheel with a cut off disc that will blow up when clogged with alum. Vice flopping around. Trying to hammer spring steel. You need to stop before you kill someone. Tell us all what area your in so we can avoid it.
It’s all good bro
When you gonna make another video on this beautiful truck?
You think she's a Beaty? I thought was only me lol .. promised wife to hurry FINISH she's then hit the truck, our life is a domino effect with todos lol
It has a tune. That smoke is common.
anyway to find out if has a tune?
FixItNick the only way is to hook a tuner up to it. Like a SCT tuner. That will tell you what tune is in it. I don’t think you can tell with an OBD II reader could tell you.
I have a SCT tuner for my 7.3 van. A stock tune will give you a little smoke. But your truck rolls serious coal. If it has any kind of decent acceleration, it has a tune. Stock 7.3’s are super slow stock. Like think of a semi truck acceleration.
yea i had an F250 with and without tune, it ripped good with a tune, this one feels like a slug till it hits good boost then pulls really good with black smoke
FixItNick maybe just a light towing tune. Considering it was obviously used to tow a 5th wheel. Maybe the guy that plays laid back Hawaiian music didn't want a big tune. Just wanted a little more power on the big end
Rollin coal
I wanna on demand lol
It's a 7.3 from 01 there's not much for emissions on it
Yea that's true that's why I love this girl
@5:35 Jesus H Christ. Something just got chewed up. Either your clutch needs adjustment (or your riding the clutch) and your grinding gears or your one of your diffs is fucked. Check that out.
Why contaminate the wonderful sounds of the 7.3 with crappy "music"?
Cuz it's stock exhaust, will 4" exhaust then that will be hot!!!
That’s normal if it’s tuned
Any idea how I can check if tuned?
if the previous owner's phone # is on the service receipt you found in the cab, try calling him.
axle tube might be bent a little
Tube I think might actually be straight but it's the end tube the floating end tube, not sure what it's called, I was thing to see if I can flip it if bent other way then buy replacement
Cheack your air filter 7.3s like to smoke with a plugged air filter
yea filter is new
The guy who owned it before probably has the fuel pump turned up reason it smokes
Where do you turn it up?
it could have a bigger injectors
Possible but I doubt it since it's fully stock
Is the fuel turned up
No idea lol
Airon Baker the only way you can turn up the fuel on heui injection is tune and injectors
Black smoke is normal for a diesel
But that much tho?
Can you the inspection process for a vehicle with to get a reconstructed title
Yes it needs inspection to register
FixItNick can you show a video of the process they put you thru
Jon Hartley it's different in different states, where are you located?
Pennsylvania but I know are was wondering different states
Or somebody threw old motoroil in the tank! Crap! That would make it smoke like that!
in the gas tank? lol i doubt it
It’s a 7.3, it’s normal
K I hope, cuz seems like to much
Diesel truck of course it’s gonna give black smoke
Yea I know just seemed way to much no?
It’s probably got bigger injectors
Anyway to check without pulling them?
I was thinking the same thing
FixItNick no way to know unless you pull valve covers
I would like to buy that truck
Never!! lol I have like 50 things to do list for it lol
M
Mooo?
