Nice work! It would be cool if there were a flanged bobbin-shaped bit that you could run down the outside of the crank arm to go from 4-sided to 8-sided with just 2 passes ...
You Sir are magnificent. What a great talent you have. I love the look of a hand machined item like that. There is something about the way it looks. Thank you mate.
@@paulbrodie I do turn a few various bronzes in my own home workshop. I find razor sharp HSS with a high Cobalt content to be very effective on bronze alloys.
Those cranks look really good in bronze. You got a result with the taps but if you were stuck you can make taps. Years ago my dad and I made a 4" to the foot traction engine. On the actual engine the parking brake had a big square thread rod to pull the brake on. I wanted to replicate the square thread so I turned an extra long bit of square thread and used the spare bit to make a tap which actually worked to tap the female thread.
Well I have never made a tap, but my friend Harvey did make me a tap. I was making brass valve caps for my Excelsiors, and that tap is not available anywhere in this world. I did look.. I liked your story, thanks for commenting...
Ahhh, a Paul Brodie video! As always brilliant work, your methods are so unique they seem so much more artistic than mathematical always inspiring!!! You and Mitch have a great weekend.
I can't make up my mind if i'm awed more by the expensive bronze, how nice it machines, the artistic look or how Master Brodie tackles each of the challenges and overcomes them in the elegant way. Speaking of bronze and tapping - bronze likes sharp - like virgin sharp even, and often forgives soft tools if they are just sharp enough. The true test to those taps will be how they fare after some high grade steel. And how they keep up after once knowing it... A Joy to watch as always
I sure would like to see some of the beautiful bronze work and retro-mod features of this Giraffe bicycle incorporated into a Paul Brodie re-designed retro-mod Penny Farthing. I think you could make the finest Penny Farthing ever made.
Gavan tools in China has good prices on tools and they're good tools. I've ordered a few taps and reamers and if you can wait on delivery, it's inexpensive and quality tools.
Don't underestimate the abilities of Chinese made tools. Sometimes you do get what you pay for (applies to any country) but they make plenty of adequate stuff for a very fair price. I'm awfully fond of the adjustable reamers you can get from China, great for seat tubes etc.
Good to see you looking stronger again. I watched a video the other day on the restoration of a prewar German bicycle it was fitted with a two speed gearbox at the crank, nothing new under the sun made me think of you and your present project. I have a shaft drive Bicycle sat out as the die cast gears cracked up and lock rather than turn. That bike was pretty cool when it worked very quiet out on tracks and really positive drive much better feel than a chain if it had had a six speed gear box and a back pedal brake it would have been great.
I am lucky a little man in Sydney deals in second hand taps and dies and some tooling, only one time he could not supply a oddball size left-hand tap . Kit from down under

Hi Paul. Did you have an extra small block of bronze to drill & tap before you tried them on the cranks? Looking forward to saying hi on May 4th. Glen from Alberta.

I think the problem is that there is a big-ass brass crank arm attached to the pedal eye and that would be flying everywhere and maybe its too long for the lathe bed?
@@dgillies5420 At a push you can put an internal treading tool into a boring head mounted in the lathe spindle and hold the crank in the tool post to get around the issue of the swing/clearance. Basically use the lathe as a horizontal boring machine However buying a tap is much easier.
odd thing that you'd make that guarantee without knowing the specifics of the materials the 2 taps are made from. The idea that everything made in China is crap quality or they aren't capable of producing any high quality tooling is utter nonsense.
I've had the same problems with Chinese sellers. Ebay agreed the listing was deliberately misleading and refunded my money. Listings are getting better but still often imply you get a set when it's only one part of a set. You must have made several hundred dollars of bronze chips by now?

Crank arms made of Bronze 😲

Nice machine work too :-)
Why use a tap instead of cutting the threads on your mill or lathe?
I think the problem is that there is a big-ass brass crank arm attached to the pedal eye and that would be flying everywhere and maybe its too long for the lathe bed?
Since its brass i wonder if he could just tap a tube and braze it into the crank arm?

The American tap may not be as "sharp" but I guarantee it'll last/hold it's edge a hell of a lot longer than the Chinese tap. 👍👍
