I can't tell you how long I've been looking for a video where somebody just wires. The basics of a bike looking forward to watching this video as I am doing the same thing with a 1981 Kawasaki KZ650H1.
This is exactly the video I was looking for. I have an 81' Goldwing GL1100 and all the accessories have been ripped off, so now I have the pleasure of deleting about 6 pounds of wiring from the fairing and lights. Thanks for the help brother! I'll be watching this a few times to help me through it. I'm only gonna have necessities, lights, fan, ignition, etc.
Nice work man, I am completely rewiring an 81 Yamaha. My process is very similar, I am surprised you didn't want to use the neutral for the safety switch. I know at one point Ill accidentally click it up to far into 2nd and try to start it (so ima add that feature). Thanks for the video
I appreciate the specific and simple wiring guide. I have to rewire both of my bikes. Someone chopped it up before I got it and it's just always something so we're going to rip, strip, clip, and rewire these bad boys.
Dude thank you so much, I have a Suzuki GR650 from 83 and i've had nothing but problems with the original electrical system on the bike. This video gave me the confidence to replace my electrical system to something more modern.
Hie Alex, great video bro. I really love building bikes and I know that wiring scares the shit out of a lot of bike enthusiasts. Thanks for helping man! I have a Yamaha xt 500 but I'm struggling to get the bore and piston in this side of Africa.
Man your video makes me so amped up to get to the wiring on my xj750 and one of my 84 viragos. I’m wanting to chop all the unneeded wiring off and have the bare minimum
I just bobbed one of those and got rid of about a mile of wiring. There's too many safety switches (which I don't need) and that computer speedometer had to go. I swapped the speedo out with one from an old CB350 Honda which works well. You don't need the clutch switch, kick stand switch or the fuel gauge, so jerk all them wires out too.
Painter D save you time and effort. Just pull them all out. Just sitting there by your motorbike being like "hmm, that doesn't look important, out you come". 😂
I have an 81 GL500 that needs a complete wire job. Going with complete minimal wiring. Just enough to start it, charge it, kill it and light it. Wish I had your knowledge. I wish I could look at the old harness and realize what I don't need. That's the big problem. I might just end up sending it out to someone who can do it. Cause I'll probably go grey doing it. That's if it works.
@@heavychevy1357 once I gutted it, and was able to look at everything separately. It was much easier. I did a zero grav, battery, I got rid of the air ride, n put in a coil over from a 954RR, I chopped the frame, I left the center lights, I went pod filters, I had a 2 into 1 exhaust fabbed for it. After awhile though trying to get the lines right for a Cafe build was so hard an I couldn't get it right. So I went to a scrambler build instead. An man it was the right idea. It's lines and the ride position of the bike fit it much better. Check out a few GL500 scrambler builds online. See what you think. I gotta go I ln an switch the stator on mine, but good luck with it. An I'll tell ya "the poor man's Guzzi" sure has a lot of snap when she's in the right design.
awesome work did really well. I've got this bike im trying to rewire. all the wires are burnt out and the guy before me had totally messed up the wiring. there are wires crossing into everything. I've just rebuild the motorcycle prepared all the fairing and tank also painted the frame. all that is left is the wiring. it's a simple motorcyle. not many parts. hopfully my attempt with the wires off the bike will be successful.
+Alex Knappenberger you say u can start a motorcycle without all the wires connected. what's essential just to get the engine started? painted the exhaust and need to treat it. therfore start the bike.
Thanks for this video. Ironically enough, i got rwo bikes in a trade, an 86 ish Honda Shadow 500 and an 81 model of the same bike you have in this vid. The Yamaha is junk afaic, it's just a rolling frame engine and trans it would cost way more than it'll ever be worth to build and no title to boot. The Honda is complete minus the fuse boxes. I came to this video to see if i can get it wired up enough to hear it run for a few seconds, and found you working in the other bike i have. Kinda funny. Had someone that was gonna send me the fuse boxes but they disappeared on me. Don't want to spend any money yet cuz neither bike has a title and the car i traded for them i only paid $200 for and put $50 In it to make it run and make it drive. I don't know if i have the rectifier or anything for the Honda I've been sitting in them a couple months. If I can make the Honda make noise I can decide if i want to keep it or if i want to maybe use it to trade for a little go kart or something. I don't have any way to turn the crank on the Yamaha so it could be seized for all I know.
Can you post a link to a diagram of the wire setup you did on this. I’m wiring an xj750 as well and have everything hooked up and am getting power to everything but I’m still not getting spark and want to verify my wires are run to the right places.
I soldered some wire for the first time today on my CM400. I didnt even look up how to do it. I was touching the solder straight to the heating element. Trying to roll the liquid beads down to where i needed it. Watching you now, I feel like a moron.
I'm not bad at wiring, but I do hate it. I have an 86 xj700 and I have an intermittent spark problem. I have a better understanding of what's needed and what's not needed to make it run now thanks to you. When you leave those bullet connections going to the TCI box unplugged it will still run right? I don't need the stand switch to work. That's for newbie riders anyways. Thanks again man.
Dude I have the same bike I got it second hand and it's all fucked up well the wiring is anyways it was running but it was running off the alt. So this is so helpful I'm going to try your method I will let you know how it goes!
Dude you are a wiring god! I have a Kikker 5150 200cc that I cant get wired to save my life. In washington we dont need turn signals so I wanted to take those out and do a simple wiring job that just turns on the motor the right way headlight brakes and kill switch and electric start. Any way you could give some tips so I can re wire this thing? Thanks for any help brother.
+Alex Knappenberger I'm sorry man I should have said that I don't know anything about bikes just starting to learn. I have the schematics but don't know what I'm even looking at. My wires look like yours all tapped up and stripped horribly. It would awesome to get it rewired like you did from scratch because again it's horrible.
Great video, I just finished my first attempt at wiring, basically chopper-wired an 81 XJ750, it all went well but I can't get it to charge and I'm having a hell of a time understanding what I did wrong. Looks like the hot from the rectifier just connects into the hot from the battery...is it that simple? Apparently I'm making it harder than it is by over thinking it.
Hey Alex, rad video. I was wondering if you have a drawing of how you wired it. I’m building a bobber where my wires are 10x worse and I think you did a simple but clean job. If you do happen to have it I would seriously appreciate it. I’ve been studying the schematics for 3 months. This guy had all the wires knotted together. 🤦🏽♂️
Could have chopped the soldering parts out , didnt need to show every one lol i guess if you want to know how much time it takes to solder this will help ....
Great job dude, wish I had the ability to look at a wiring diagram and actually know what it all meant! Have had a circuit burn out on my GS500 and think it might be due to a dodgy "Adjustable LED" flasher relay, anyone know if it's feasible that the relay could have allowed enough current through it to fry the wiring?
I have 2003 Loncin Cyclone 200cc which is 1 cylinder 4 atroke vertical engine. Can't find any wiring for it because the wires have different striped colors and solid colors that I cannot find online.
Fab stuff I have an 86 fj1200 I'm building into a street fighter and I needed basic wiring. Many thanks for the video. I assume try and keep as much of the integral ignition wiring in place if it's complete or cut out or shorten as needed?
Hey man love the video. Looks like you got a lot of knowledge with the 82 750 seca I had a question. So I wired in a new head light and speedometer. The bike doesn’t run and I don’t have any spark coming out of my coil for my 2/3 cylinders. Any info would be greatly appreciated
Any advice on rewiring a Chinese bike, its got wiring all in but runs but all the wiring from the lights needs re doing as someone got there must on it to try re do it , cant find a single wiring diagram online so was wanting to start from scratch and put back in anything necessary and just put in the bare minimum to make it run and have all the lights working x
great job and great video!! I have the same bike and messed up the electric wire from the left side of the handle. I was told it had to do with the clutch. not entirely such what that wire did because the bike still runs and changes gear no problem. is there a way you know what wire I'm talking about and what does it do?
I need to put a new ignition on a KLX250. I'm looking at a wiring diagram and almost everything (colour-wise) matches. The wires I have that aren't connected and from memory came off the bottom of the ignition don't match the colours for the Main Switch. I am thinking the Main Switch on the wiring diagram is representing the ignition switch, right? Because the bike is a stolen recovery the ignition switch was trashed. The wires were in the bottom. I disconnected them and removed the old damaged ignition switch. The wires I have left over (not connected to anything) I'm sure are the ones that came off the bottom of the ignition. I've lost the photos I took of them (I'm still looking for them) so I'm not sure but they have to be. All that's left up front are the four indicator wires for the left and right sides and these other wise which have to be for the ignition. But they don't match the colour coding on the diagram. What's up with that do you think? I've not be able to source a new ignition switch yet because it's an older bike (about 14 years old now). I would like to but I was hoping to just buy any one and just change wires to suit. I just wanted to test the bike and try the ignition. Can't you just wire in a switch or two to mimic the ignition?

I have a 07 v satr my wires are crossed up some where but it has so many wires that are not in use and in the way I can't seem to get it back running how do I go about fixing this issue
I bought an 82 xs650 bobber someone eliminated the fusebox on. Only the headlight works now (while running only). I can live without turn signals and even dash lights but I need tail and brake lights. Can I pick up a hot wire from the headlight power(in) and wire it into the 2 wires going along rear fender to tail/brake with a 15 amp inline fuse? Is there a better way to get just these 2 components working?
4:40 not really a pro tip if rotten old wiring is what caused the problem in the first place. it really probably is better to just get new wiring if you are going through all the trouble. Start a wire pile.
how would i get rid of my clutch, neutral and kickstand safety switch? literally just unplug and get rid of them or do i have to do some fancy soldering work
i found a 1970's 1980's honda odyssey go cart like atv and someone took this engine in this bike and put it into the odyssey but the wiring is all messed up do u have or know where to get the wiring diagram?

I’m building a mini bike and had to order new turn signals which need wired so do I really need to sauder it or can I get away with twisting and shrink tube
Good video I'm doin same right now b nice if u went more in to detail with in stalling the pickup I need help with that there ain't many videos or anything online that I can find.
dude can you please send me the wiring diagram which you did on this bike the basic one because i have a hyosung kinetic comet 250 r with a busted wiring . :( please bro help me out a bit thankx in advance .
Hey, I have looked all over to find how this 3 wires is connected with the ignitor. It’s seems like it should be 4 wires on the ignitor but I can’t find the last one? Is it only the grey, orange and the black that should be connected with the ignitor or am I missing one more wire? And I don’t even know how they should be connected in right order to the ignitor. So if someone please have a picture of this connection please send it to me. My bike is a Yamaha XJ 700 from 1985 i guess.
For the most part: Ignition Coil needs a hot (via safety relay unless bypassed), and connection to ignition unit (probably your orange), Its also grounded. I count three.
I'm trying to do this in a similar situation with a 85 honda shadow 700 can any one tell me the bare minimum for the Main harness. Idc about brake lights or any of that I just want it to run
No I've been searching for a while and this one looks like it actually might help me so I'm going to finish watching it!!!

For some applications, bock road jockeys and riders these bikes are over wired and can coast precious cruising time should problems arise.
