Can a cheap off-centre AliExpress watch be saved? Is it even worth the time?

Normally, I'm a 100% vintage watch guy, but I do love an off-centre hour and minute hand. The problem is, I'm not a member of the landed gentry or a trust fund baby, so I can't afford one. I've decided to see if a cheap watch from AliExpress can actually be turned into something I'd be happy to strap onto my wrist. Can it even be serviced, and why does it have two second hands? Let's find out.
Join me as we explore the history of Chinese watchmaking and see if this junk can be turned into something worth owning.
The custom movement holder for this watch movement can be found here: atelierdjames.com/wp-content/...

Videos like yours make me appreciate the history and all that goes into a watch.

I'm looking forward to a continued update on this project. Thank you.

Excellent work as always. I’d absolutely love to see this movement hand-finished and cased to an absurd degree. A real rags-to-riches deal I’m sure.
Watchmaking school is proceeding rather well. Currently on encasing and regulating. I’m not exactly Breguet, but I believe myself and the rest of my classmates are coming along rather well.
One point of correction, I must add however. You stated that Sea-Gull has a problem with “borrowing” ETA designs. In the vast majority of cases, this is perfectly legal for Sea-Gull to do, as the patent surrounding the original ETA design has long since expired. The ETA 2428/Sea-Gull ST2130 as well as the Unitas 4697/Sea-Gull ST36 are the two most famous examples of this. I believe Sea-Gull had actually purchased a license from ETA to produce their not currently out of patent protection 2892.

Great video, I really enjoyed it!
If you were referring to the Seitz pivot straightening tool when you mentioned expensive tools for this task, please know that it’s a waste of money if you intend upon using it for its stated purpose.
The instructors at WOSTEP call it the pivot breaker.
The one redeeming feature of this tool are the jewels set in it.
They’re actually graduated in half sizes, so it’s great for accurately measuring the diameter of pivots by test fitting them in the jewel holes.
The Seitz pivot gauge that has the jewels set in a metal plate lacks the half sizes.
If you see a pivot breaker for a bargain price, they’re worth it for measuring pivots.

It seems to be common that many cheaper Chinese watches have very well made parts but the assembly is sloppy. And your video once again proved that point. Also, if you remove the auto winding function I think you would be better to leave the original spring. This way you will not ever have to worry about overwinding it. For many years it has been my position that all manual watches should be equipped with the spring and barrel used in automatic watches.

What is this thing about cheap Chinese movements not being properly lubricated? Even Seiko could and should improve in that area. I wonder if the oiling process can be automated as, I assume, assembling, or part of it, is. As usual my congrats for your videos as well as the entertaining commentary you supply with them. Got up early this morning and spent my time watching the story unfolding while sipping my cup of tea at 6,30 iAM. What a nice way to start my day!

I bought an Amazon special, just to take a look. $17.98 free shipping . I was surprised to find a good accurate movement. The watch case is of poor quality, basically a dust cover. Now you tell me that the Chinese do not have super microscale robots that make these. Actual skilled people put this together. Now I feel kinda guilty.

Dude, yes, I'm from a part of the world where there are surfers, we ARE all nuts, but it has nothing to do with staring down a microscope. We were nuts when we started this thing called watchmaking, or perhaps more accurately, we were nuts before that, and we just chose to express that insanity through watchmaking....
I'd love to see what you intend to do with your lump of purified Chinesium. No, that's not meant to pejorative, just a lame attempt at humor.
That chunky back plate is likely that way because it was simply easier to do it that way, without respect to elegance or fineness. It was just easy. Again, that is without judgement, just honesty. All of the fine touches of "haut horology" are luxuries indulged in by those who are confident in their skills and have the time to show off, for money. That the thing spun up the way it did, without a jewel in the balance, says more about it's quality than any amount finishing some Swiss master watchmaker can grace it with.
