Sorenson puts her faith in gene results, which too often recover false positives in deep time studies (e.g. Afrotheria). Better to rely on the evidence of trait studies, which also can include fossils. Sharks had their origins deep in the Silurian from taxa resembling late-surviving toothless Chondrosteus along with paddlefish juveniles (before they develop their massive rostrum).
