  • What are the differences betwee the American woodcock (Scolopax minor) and the Eurasian woodcock (Scolopax rusticola). Obviosly there from 2 different continents but what else?
And why do the woodcocks walk so weird?

It's that imaginary music they hear in their heads...stayin' alive, stayin' alive...

What's funny about their "dance" is, is that the newborns are walking normal, so is it learned behaviour or genetic, or do they need some time before this behaviour sets in. So many questions for this lovely birds.

I think the chicks follow their mom in every step, as soon as they learn to walk they start to mimic her. The woodcocks apperently think that this dance is going to shake the worms to the surface.

0:35 I read somewhere it’s to lure worms to the surface so they can easily eat them.

What I want to know is who named them "WoodCocks" and why. Also, should they get royalties for inventing the ultimate "Abbey Road."

According to my research the word "woodcock" comes from old english and was first mentioned in 1050. This was the naming of the Eurasian woodcock in England. The name means wood+cock/bird. The bird was named that because it was very easy to catch, sort of like a cock/chicken because they can't fly that well.
Hopefully this makes some sense 🫤

Nature sometimes can't be explained. These little birds bouncing up and down as they walk to mimic leaf movement while hunting for food is amazing. The question is, when they are on a hard surface, a road, they still think they have to bounce as they walk?

You always see the videos where the babies are emulating the adults. I wonder if they are raised separate, will they just not have the walk? Would they pick it up later if exposed?

@@shawnsg I think it's a learning process for the chicks to try to imitate their mother. They see what she does, and by some time they'll do the same. 🐦🐦🐦
