Yep, I'm now 62, recobering from DEFEATING stage 3 lung cancer. Chemo and radiation beat me up pertty bad. Kinda in a forced retirement. Got a little 12X16 wood craft shop in the backyard. I do the craft show thing, feel like I do OK. After working most of my life its hard to kick back. I have found myself making special tools to help in the shop. I do scrollsaw fret work and couple yrs back got a mini wood lathe. Life is good.....

Very nice da Vinci hammer. I built one from some cants of black locust timber. The fun part was coming up with a pulley combination to get the rpm just right. I see you added a caster the the helve to negate friction between it and the cam. I used a brass plate as a bearing shoe on the cam to negate wear and friction as my cam is made of fir timber.

I sure would like to be all negative about that home made POS, but it's actually pretty ingenious. The only thing I might change is to smooth out the cam lobes and make a shaft that would allow me to change hammer heads to adjust weight.

Can't see it holding up for a long time but worn out parts should be easily made and replaced. I know a number of smiths who do light work that would really like it. Very creative.

I've thought of making a power hammer with 10ft or more drop height. It would use a pair of lift chains that catch the hammer at the bottom and release it from the top letting it free fall. The setup would probably require a sizeable flywheel to avoid overloading the engine/motor at the moment catching the hammer. Cadence would be quite low probably 10-20bpm at most. High impact force of course would compensate for that.
