- Japanese decorative sculptures (shrine and temple sculptures, float sculptures, etc.) are often made by attaching a tree to the main plate instead of a single tree.
In this video, we will make a tree with a sculpture between the stalls (drum stands) that is created for festivals in the Banshu region of Hyogo prefecture.
About attached trees
The gap engraving consists of a main plate consisting of three plates, a back plate, a middle plate, and a front plate, and a tree attached on top of it (some are carved from a single tree).
There are several reasons to carve and assemble them separately. It requires less material, is easier to engrave, and enables complex engraving.
In addition, due to these two advantages, as a result, it is more cost effective than carving with a single piece of wood.
