Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

I was just thinking that getting membership at the gym to take shower, makes you to go to the gym more often :) Great stuff
It really does 💪🏼

Plus our gym has all your beauty products, hair-dryer and straightener so its a win win.
@@deathlarsen7502 is that true?
Not in my case, just go, do my business and left. I always promise myself to start working out but never happen...I must confess, I am renting a room now because of the pandemic, and the fact that my van was written off in March. Sleep in a Ford Mondeo for a month but second lockdown here in the UK make me move to a fix place for now. Looking for a new van to build. I find depressing being in a brick and mortar place.
Thank you for answering the biggest questions I had about van life. After what we’ve been thru in 2020, I’m seriously considering a major life change by going on the road. In the 90s I traveled constantly as a photojournalist, then life changed and I planted roots. The song of the road still plays in my heart. It’s time I listened. Good luck and continued success in all you do! Keep creating, you have a wonderful vision.
Yep, often the toilet and shower aspects are discussed little if any. And this is probably what would steer me to a different lifestyle, at least at my age. If I was in my 20's still I might do it for a period of time as I do enjoy adventure.
I loved that you were so honest about: "It is a drawback that you do need to go and find your showers/toilets!" So so many other people just brush over it like it is nothing. That has never made sense for me. Now, when you say: "There was an adjustment period" My mind went like: "Ahhaa, finally REAL information about the van life and what it is REALLY like!" "I CAN do it! I CAN adjust to the change if I want to"
Thank you! This is much more important and inspirational than all the beautiful "coffee moment by the sea, life is perfect in the van" -videos.
Thank you for your honesty and openness! It makes your videos pieces of gold!
I will check out your other videos about nomadic life-style!
Thank you so much for your great video!!! Many blessings on your path 💗💗💗

@@ChristianSchaffer In the here and now you're a photographer and documentary video maker who was just profiled by the New York Times. I say follow your passion, even when you're living in something that doesn't have wheels.
when I was 8 nyears old, I told my mon that I wanted to be a truckdriver, when getting old. My mun said WHY?? I said, because you live inside the truck. duh! today I am 52 and I still get inspired and dream of living on the road :-) cheers!
Haha I love that
You still can lots of older ppl do
You should follow your dream my friend. Before I discovered a way to make a living on the road, I held a job at the YMCA (maintenance) and lived in my sprinter van. "Livin in a van down by the river" heh! But anyway, one day, I stopped making excuses and just did it. Kept my eye out for the right van at the right price and jumped. Found a 2011 Mercedes sprinter van 👍!Looking back, my only regret is not doing it sooner. Oh and I learn to put money back. I'd put back all the money you can. The occasional breakdown can happen at the worse time. I didn't manage my money starting out and it almost cost me the whole set up. Transmission went out while I was between camp sites. I got lucky in the form of awesome friends but it could have been a nightmare. Now days, I can cover ANYTHING that may happen top👆 to bottom 👇and I'm able to go anyplace, anytime I wish. I keep a small dry storage locker near Cleveland for things I just can't let go. IE photo albums and other sentimental items. I don't do van life vids but, may someday. I like helping folks in person mostly, I'm a somewhat skilled van builder and have a pretty good imagination lol. If you plan on going solo, I'd get a small pet. My lil 5 lb dog name Lynard has been great and kinda makes it so I'm not technically all alone. Maybe a insecurity issue, I guess. Wish you much happiness in whatever you do. Love peace and prayers. 🤟✌️🙏
Oh and I just turn 54 May 2020. Never too old! 👍⌚
@@fmbdan Thank you for sharing! all the best to you! Annie
I must admit when I first saw you, I was skeptical. I'm not any longer, I'm impressed by your energy and your confidence. I am aware of the artistic aura all around you and I can't say enough about how amazing what you're doing is. Be safe, be well, and be an artist.
Just wanted to give a little tip about the truck stops...if you get a professional driver or expedite rewards card, you will get a half shower credit for 14 gallons of gas or a full shower credit if your tank can hold 28 gallons. Showers are about $12.00 if you want to pay for one. Or even go to the kiosk and when a driver comes in, ask them if they will put you on as a "co-driver". It doesn't cost them anything extra, and don't worry, you don't have to share the shower with them!!! :)
That's a great tip, thank you! Also good to know that last bit haha
While you mentioned grocery stores and public library...another resource to add to the list for restrooms...Home Depot and Lowes. As a real estate photographer, when shooting a house, I don't ask to use a client's bathroom (or wifi). I make a pitstop before arriving using a nearby resource.
Thanks for the tips girl!! Me and my best friend are doing van life in a couple months! Super excited!🤗

Bye from the Netherlands
As long as you don't stop in a really bad neighborhood, yes.
Good question, it would be nice to get some first hand info from women van lifers.
Anyhow, I would assume its all relative, don't park in bad neighborhoods as someone mentioned. You probably should pay close attention as well parking in parking lots like Walmart and truck stops etc.
Carry a firearm and learn how to use it properly.
@@laylaharb1410 So tell me, exactly where would be a ''GOOD neighborhood''???

My only concern would be getting mail, securely, and promptly. I've gone paperless everywhere I can, but there are still a few holdouts that insist on licking a stamp.
Doc, North Dakota is the most nomad friendly state you only need to stay one night in the state. The service is called virtual mailbox and if you have magazines, Bills, etc. for a small fee they can send them to you wherever you are at.
@@eddiesmedley4785 I've read about those. Thanks, Ed.
You can rent a PO Box at the post office.
Steve Yi - Yes that’s true but it would be a sort of anchor unless you planned on staying in one area for an extended period.
Ed Smedley It's actually not a North Dakota. It's South Dakota. But there are some other things to consider. I've heard that health insurance is expensive in SD.
I love the neat and clean camper countertops and the fact that YOU look so clean and styled. There is nothing 'grimy on the road' about you. You make van life desirable.
You are so To The Point ! It's a great style plus all your videos are full of more information and less fluff. You really know what you're going to talk about and what you're going to say. Very professional but also quite One on One.

Indeed she has!
I agree!!!
When you have to do legal stuff, what do you say is your address for mail or filling forms? Do you use a friend’s, po.box, on the road....
Greaaat question. One of the biggest headaches of living on the road, tbh. I use my Mom's address in Florida...which is kind of a pain because I have to pay for everything to be shipped twice and pray I intercept it in time before moving on to a new location. Amazon prime is helpful though, I can pick up packages easily that way. Also, general delivery. Great topic for a future video ✌🏼
She's talkin' Van life while wearing Converse.
Why does that matter?

I love your attitude and energy towards how you live. I can tell you really love it!
Thanks Bailey, life on the road isn't always easy but I absolutely love it 😊
Christian, can you make a video on how you actually wash your cloths and do laundry in the van?
I found your video particularly helpful in understanding what van life is like. Thanks for making it.
Thanks! I actually just go to a laundromat, super chill and inexpensive 👚
Toured nonstop for almost 2 decades and got to where my van was better than a hotel room with a few drawbacks. I never thought about the gym idea 💡. I was happy to stumble on this video. Having hiked a lot of miles +2500 , I found it funny to see you have the same type of issues in your van life as we do on the trail. Not sure if you're a hiker as well, but you sure do have the attitude! Bright blessings!

I am inspired to fix my van just like this because i love travelling. Youre awesome and very cool. I am now your regular viewer and follower good content. 😊
Thanks for following along ✌🏼
I guess that answered it. I suspect a lot of us were wondering if there was some hidden, wrap-around shower curtain that pulled out or some kind of tub-basin hidden somewhere. I've been very surprised to find some van conversions where the closet and shower are the same thing if you just swivel the clothes rod out first. It makes a lot more sense to just get a gym membership at a national chain. Good call.
Yeah I considered a shower, but it would have taken up quite a bit of space. For the shower itself and also the water storage. If I were to rebuild, I still wouldn't install one
Love this van, my one addition would be to put the shower tray under the floor and have it hinge it like a hatch, use a wrap around curtain that can be tucked away and a rain head fitted within the ceiling, then the shower can be in the middle floor if you needed as a back up or occasional use option when the gym is inconvenient 😁
That's what I love about vanlife...it's all so customizable 🙌🏼
Anytime fitness seems like the perfect deal! I'm working on my van build right now and I'm going to be moving into it before everything is done. I'll have a composting toilet eventually, and a bird bath type shower, but I think this gym membership will do the trick until everything is set up. And if I like it, it might be a great place to take longer showers now and again and work out too from time to time! Thanks for the tip, really enjoyed your first video too :)
Thanks Bethany! Yeah, Anytime Fitness is great, only thing is you have to use your 'home' gym for the first 30 days. After that you can use any of the locations. Awesome that you're building your own van 💕
= @@ChristianSchaffer = I recommend to get a composting style & separating toilet. . Most people only have to empty them about once every 2 to 4 weeks.. .If your still using other washrooms a lot, they probably last more then 2 months between emptying.. . A proper design does not have any smells, and they do not use any water. . There is no black water tank to empty. . You can build your own for less then 50 dollars ... Research key words - separating toilets, or Urine diverting and composting toilets.
Hope these videos will be around in 2 years, because when I retire I plan on living this lifestyle; taking as many notes as I can. Thanks
just be sure to invest in a toilet/shower combo..
that's a great idea

In my travels, I've found hotel lobby bathrooms are the cleanest nicest out there. They've never questioned or confronted me yet. Just FYI

@@ChristianSchaffer If the desk clerk does give you a curious look, just walk right up and ask the price of a room. Say thanks and go on your merry way. They'll just assume you're comparison shopping and won't think anything of it. Lol
Edit: Oh, it's "hotels" and definitely not "motels" lol
Hotels are much much cleaner and usually have considerably more class. 😁

Have you considered building a small cargo trailer that contains just a bathroom? That could be an option (kinda like a portable outhouse).

As an over-the-road truck driver, I can totally relate to the potty and shower situation.
Most truck stop shower facilities are quite good, having undergone upgrades during the past five-six years. Showers are free with the purchase of 50-60 gallons of fuel (at a time), otherwise they run $10 - $15.
Loves Travel Stops are the least expensive but Petro Travel Centers have the best shower facilities.

20 years down the line:
Hi guys, let me show you my personal jet which i live in 24/7
😀
HA. But actually, one day I want to own a helicopter and try that out for camping. #helilife
I remember years ago seeing a popular science or mechanic magazine that had an old school helicopter made into a camper floating on a lake! It was one of the choppers that looked like a grasshopper! Was pretty awesome!
@@ChristianSchaffer 😃best of luck dear. Hope to get that video soon 👍
@@ChristianSchaffer ruclips.net/video/MJRlQrN8RAY/видео.html
@@ChristianSchaffer I did that about 16 years ago for a couple of years. The big problem is that things malfunction a lot. It's VERY expensive. You can't leave the helicopter unattended except at airports. Animals can damage them in the wild. You are constantly cleaning lots of bugs off that big windscreen (Use Klear-To-Land ... a great product for removing bugs). It's fun, but a huge responsibility. Way better is to have a friend who has one. Then it's no hassle. You really need to keep them inside most of the time. I filled my helicopter bucket list item, though. I'd been dreaming of doing it since I was 12. Finally did it at 54. Check it out: ruclips.net/video/xRbMb5jhebc/видео.html This is just an engine start video. The sound will get you wound up. I haven't posted other videos, though I could if enough people asked.
I enjoyed your video....but shoes on counter top....

Thanks Miguel 🙌🏼Yeah, I hear San Diego has a super rad vanlife community. Gotta check it out someday 🚐
Question, how do you stay so beautiful looking living in a van? Hair is on point, kicking it in blue jeans and Chuck Taylor's on the counter top like a boss talking about 1s and 2s😂 I love it my kind of woman lol... No for real though I've been looking pretty hard at just selling my home and getting into the van life. Especially with the way the world is going and I travel to ride motocross as it is so all of this information is super helpful. But I wonder why no one likes to go number 2 in there van is that just kind of a no go unless you have a black water tank? I'm sure they make toilets that can hide the odor and not be that big of a Hassel if need be? I know it's gross to talk about but I've always been the type of person that avoids all toilets but my own if possible especially alot of male restrooms can be pretty rough. I've been looking into those toilets that self contain everything into a bag. Either that or the cassette toilet that separates everything but you have to vent and I can see how it could just be gross to have to deal with it so I see why people tend to use public. Which shower and laundry is no problem half the time I shower at the beach anyway when I'm done surfing it's just the toilet issue I don't dig so much no pun intended! Just don't want to put a blackwater tank. I don't know that's enough talk about that, but we're human and we all do it. Although I heard girls don't even fart so who knows lol. By the way beautiful pictures and I hope you're still enjoying your travels!
This is so awesome. And the things you covered are pretty much the only thing holding me back personally* as you guessed, so thanks for saying that :). Hopefully I'll be out there like you one day soon. Best wishes from Australia

We are traveling full time, your own shower / toilet is one of the few things we actually miss from time to time. Just to walk around in your bathroom barefoot. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah it's a trade-off for sure. Makes me appreciate the times I do have a shower & toilet tho 🤓
@@ChristianSchaffer so true dear 👌
I like that she’s not in a bikini.
Not that I wouldn’t like it if she was
I mean I like that she’s not pushing that
Like so many of these van life girls

Why would you put your shoes on the cutting board where you put your food...
meet Clorox Wipes. Living in a small space often leads you to do things you might not normally do for the sake of variety, but surfaces can and should be regularly cleaned. Shoes have dirt and germs, not plutonium, and dirt and germs are always something you need to clean for.
This was super informative, really enjoyed it. You make me wanna buy a van and live like a gypsy lol
😆😆🎉
It's only fun on youtube
@@teslatruck6697 I beg to differ. Different people enjoy different things.
Amara Mast That’s true and “only fun on RUclips” is rather broad. Perhaps the point is that the drawbacks, day to day, aren’t being presented. But we see what is shared and there’s always responsibility on behalf of the viewer. There’s drawbacks in life, regardless of how it’s lived.
@@junior.von.claire obviously...I'm not an idiot. Shes talked about what's difficult about living on the road tho so I'm not sure about the point of your comment 😂 thanks tho 😅
