Of the 3 swords, epees are the stiffest. Heck, part of the culture behind the development of epees was that sometimes friendly fencing escalated into first blood duels in which the combatants snapped the button off the tip.
If you put the blades on a gabrit test rig, however, sabre is the stiffest....it's allowed half a centimeter LESS deflection under the test weight than epee.

Samurai did use bokken for home defense, some records even show that some prioritized a bokken over picking up one of their shirasaya, since they'd be fighting indoors and the most reliable attack in a home where you can't necessarily complete a full swing in a hall would be a stab. Samurai would be familiar with swords binding in cloth or flesh, and if their hands slip forward, their fingers are chiclets after that.
If you were trained with either of those training swords and wanted something for home defense, why not just get the real version of the sword? I guess some places might outlaw swords, but yeah at that point just get a heavy stick lol
Fencing longsword is a better choice imo. Without protective gear there’s a decent chance a committed strike can break weaker bones and if you hit the head a concussion is pretty likely.
I think you're underestimating the power of a steel whip that is stiff enough to poke out an eye or damage a laryx. Remember that fencers wear a steel helmet and padding for a reason. It's not the best, but it's far from harmless.
For general fencing safety, yeah. For self-defense, only having a small handful of small targets that will have any significant effect would not be ideal in high stress conditions.
As a saberist I could probably find some way to deal a tad more than bruises with a saber if need be. Also saber blades are like $25 to replace so don’t be afraid to make the tip sharp by breaking it. Watch out for metal splinters though
Just break out a M1917 U.S. Navy cutlass. Not only does it have the stabby-stabby and slashy-slashy, but it keeps the full guard and much more manageable size for confined quarters like a hallway or living room. And it is better suited for the job.
As long as we have Hornady Critical Defense, Liberty Civil Defense, that nasty Black Hills stuff, or whatever else like that, I think melee blunt force trauma might want to take a seat in the back. Now, taking outside of countries with firearms or pepper spray or something, I might opt for a frying pan simply because the surface area might be somewhat decent protection. Might be a bit heavy and strain the wrists though, but as far as heavily improvised weapons go that probably all households have (not everyone has a baseball bat), I don't know what else I'd pick.
A hema saber is better in this context, it will break hand, knees, collar bones and skulls, and I train with it against resistance often so an untrained dude with a bat would be easy pickins.

I never understand the idea of not escalating home invasion situation. Had such situations quite often, grew up in a rather not very safe country. Most burglars run at a sight of weapon. One that doesn't run, won't be respecting your rights, nor law, nor have mercy. By the way, musket will not deter home invader that much. Bayonet does way better. Don't ask how I know.
A person I know explained to me how she used fencing training and a long stick to once keep an assailant at a distance, particularly in the context of how much I looked down on the sport of fencing. At worst, it would work like a larger self-defense whip, a stiffer one with a hand guard, which can be held in reverse grip, and which can take out an opponent's eye, especially if armed with a shorter weapon like a knife. Even if the assailant was armed with a gun, the fencing saber is quick, could catch them off guard, possibly knock the gun out of their hand if the hand is struck, and a quick blow to the throat might incapacitate. Still, not as good as a long club or heavier stick.
I personally think its better to own a musket for home defence as that's what the founding fathers intended Also black powder weaponry is scarily easy to procure
It’s better than nothing, but all these options have the severe disadvantage of requiring you to be close to your attacker. Meaning one mistake and you’re out of options. I understand it’s not an option for everyone, if you’re worried about self defense and can get a firearm, do that. It’s not as cheap as a baseball bat, and requires more training, but it’s perfectly attainable.
My uncle once beated a man who invaded his home. He jumped his wall and slept at his coutyard, probably drunk. However he did not use a saber or sword, but a belt! He shouted "Sir, don't hit me, please sir, don't hit me", and jumped the wall back to the street.
At my fencing club there’s a joke that the best weapon for a zombie apocalypse is epee because the guard is the heaviest and the blade is strongest making it the best mace
Fencing sabers do hurt like hell even with protective gear. They're also pretty difficult to block effectively, because they're ridiculously flexible and often bend around a parrying or blocking weapon to still strike the target. But yeah, a bokken or shinai is definitely a better choice; there's a good reason kendo/kenjutsu protective equipment is so heavy and thorough. You can absolutely bust heads with those practice swords.
Remember watching a video where a guy used a machete as home defense against his neighbor’s crazy ex. The assailant was deterred and in fact slapped aside the blade, knocking it out the machete out the man’s (seriously, the dude had a poor stance and grip). So like with firearms, a sword should be maintained, the owner well trained, and lethal. Cause even though no one (well rational) wants to take a life, one shouldn’t rely on the threat of violence for someone will answer the call. On a side note, you should look up Sir Trude, first female knight of the SCA (the combat) who also whipped out a sword and scared away four would be muggers. (She was decently trained with a sword and was wearing chain mail armor. The Snappy one liner was just the icing. There’s even a song about it called “I See Your Six”. The song is worth a listen.
If this home or self defense then the situation has been elevated to a point where your life is possibly in danger. I don't think it matters what they're thinking pull out a damn weapon.
Long swords in houses aren't very ideal because of the limited space of area. You might hit the sofa or wall or tv. I would think of a short sword or anything more than 12 inches to 18 inches. In a scenario, do not provoke but hide & call authorities. If your cover is blown, it's too late because you're too close.
We discussed this at my HEMA group and the immediate answer is that you'd get arrested for threatening a home intruder with a dangous weapon and would most likely have all your swords and more confiscated by the cops. Just use your fists!
Think it's too long to use effectively inside a building. With the blade cut short, might make a decent trench spike type of thing, or the guard alone as one heck of a brass knuckle?
To everyone saying get a gun: you are statistically more likely to use it on yourself than an intruder. Unless you're living somewhere that's like, guaranteed to have dangerous intruders, it's probably not worth increasing your risk of death so much for a possibility which might not ever happen. I mean, it's a risk you can take, but it's not this magic cure-all solution that everyone should do regardless of their situation. Okay, back to the video topic: A video about how best to use that bokken against an intruder (differences from how you'd use the sharp steel version especially, should you still bother with edge alignment?) would be interesting and potentially quite useful to a decent portion of your audience who probably have one lying around.
I completely disagree. What matters is your skill level. That fencing sword can easily kill an invader into your home if you have the skill to attack the proper points. If it is at night do NOT turn on your lights. That puts YOU at a disadvantage. You should know how to move around your house at night without lights. I see you're more of an edge weapon man. I prefer them too. They've always been scarier and more effective in close quarters than guns. You're also less likely to accidentally kill a family member. If the break in is at night, I have to assume the attack is more dangerous than during the day, when most break ins happen. So they've already escalated. So, in the dark, with my sword i am going center of the belly. They are going to move, so unless you're very skilled, aiming for the head or neck is risky. But the belly is good for those who've never been blooded. If they try to avoid, they run the risk of offering their spleen and kidney or the liver, kidney aorta and vena cava. If they don't turn, you can pierce their intestines, possibly stomach and heart if you angle up. No matter what you hit, they are going to try to get away. And assuming they can make it, they're going to the hospital. Or they dīe. So, even if they get away, it's easier for cops to find them. Happy hunting!
If there is a bad guy threatening, he has ALREADY escalated the former normal situation! If you, the defender, sees no option but to face this sudden threat, you are JUSTIFIED to use whatever means to defend yourself! Of course, it all depends what type of weapon he has, but keep this in mind: bad guys are not looking for a FIGHT, they are looking for VICTIMS!!! If you put up a good fight they won't think you're worth it; have you seen vids of smaller animals standing up to predators in the wild? Same principle.
Same logic as using a non gun that looks like a real gun. Not a great idea, cuz now they think u have just pulled a gun and will respond accordingly. Never try to scare someone attacking u away by trying to trick them into having a more dangerous weapon than u have. Cuz they might ACTUALLY have a weapon to match what they think u have.
nah fr tho? i'm gonna have a greatsword and full plate (i'll most likely already be suited up) nothing more intimidating than seeing someone dressed in full plate armor and a greatsword ready to end you breaking in
Wait, aren't you the guy who also used to say firearms are too much for personal protection? Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but sounds like you're advocating for a defence weapon that can match escalation to begin deescalation. Like a gun.
I'm 100% certain I've never said firearms are too much for personal protection. I've said that they're not ideal for 100% of the global population! But that's a tiny bit different.

Okay, back to the video topic: A video about how best to use that bokken against an intruder (differences from how you'd use the sharp steel version especially, should you still bother with edge alignment?) would be interesting and potentially quite useful to a decent portion of your audience who probably have one lying around.
In the USA… never bring a knife to a gun fight.
dude you got the cold steel training katana too?!
Pain compliance is a terrible strategy. Never rely solely on less than lethal force.
I tbh would prefer a bonk stik more
I’d say If ur just using it to scare them and you have something that can genuinely hurt them like a firearm or some other sword then it’s alrigjt
I mean, a bayonet even without a gun to attach it to, would be a scary weapon.
Jeff! ❤
I'd take a shinai over any of the fencing swords.
Longsword Feder go brrrrt
@@fencingleprechaun might actually kill the guy
Hold it from the other end and use it like a flail
If there is a bad guy threatening, he has ALREADY escalated the former normal situation! If you, the defender, sees no option but to face this sudden threat, you are JUSTIFIED to use whatever means to defend yourself! Of course, it all depends what type of weapon he has, but keep this in mind: bad guys are not looking for a FIGHT, they are looking for VICTIMS!!! If you put up a good fight they won't think you're worth it; have you seen vids of smaller animals standing up to predators in the wild? Same principle.
I have a katana, a rapier, and a falchion and a bokken. Not to mention the 38 in a drawer and a 22 in my bag 😂😂😂
Excellent point on escalation to many gloss over.
Buy a machete, they’re light, agile, flexible and very good in close quarters
12 gauge works pretty well though
So 1796 light cavalry model it is!
nah fr tho? i'm gonna have a greatsword and full plate (i'll most likely already be suited up) nothing more intimidating than seeing someone dressed in full plate armor and a greatsword ready to end you breaking in
If they get past the dogs, its not my sword collection they should worry about.
It works
You’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel with answering this question that no one was wondering
I have. 3 ft tall axe for anyone who breaks in.. intimidation factor is more than enough from that.
Lol a blunt sword. I think they should bring back the real rapiers.
I myself use the Yamato for home defense
I mean with the fencing sword, you might find someone like me, insane and doesnt really... Do the whole.. feeling pain thing
A basket on a sword, would that thing work as a brass knuckle?
Sword brass knuckles #history #weapons #martialarts #fight #selfdefense #blade
Remove cap, sharpen tip, now it will kill.
bullets, the simultaneous escalation and deescalation
My home is defended by mossberg colt and ruger
Depends on how much space you have in doors
a real sabre however
So don't bring a fencing saber to a rapier fight?
I use katana. Until I can get my rifle not swinging it just side of bed to stab stab.
TLDR: don't let your morality write a check your @$$ can't cash, get real weapon
Lol oh! It wasn't until you showed that it's not an actual sword that I understood
Its best not to rivet an attacker to your weapon and self.
I prefer using a chainsaw
Wait, aren't you the guy who also used to say firearms are too much for personal protection?
Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but sounds like you're advocating for a defence weapon that can match escalation to begin deescalation. Like a gun.
Or go beyond a fencing saber and go for a real melee weapon that actually backs up the escalation.
I'm 100% certain I've never said firearms are too much for personal protection.
I've said that they're not ideal for 100% of the global population! But that's a tiny bit different.
@@MarcusVance as I said I very well could have been mistaken, haha.
My wife and I are disabled and have lived all around NY, commuting to Manhattan by train. I've always been a firm believer that firearms make all men tall.
Hope I didn't come off as condescending, the other reply makes me feel like it has. I enjoy the content, alongside hoping for a day that we are all made equal as possible.
My best to ya, mate.
Home de-fence
Wait why have a sword that's not sharpen for home defense?
I own a katana for home defense, because unlike a fencing saber it can dismember an attacker
I still say use a cutlass
Ok but what if it was sharp
I prefer an axe. Imagine when you broke into someone home and see a big guy wearing old-dirty t-shirt with an axe in his hands. Im gonna piss right there
Gun.
I carry a bayonet for self defense lol.
if I simply want to intimidate an intruder, without a fire arm. I'm thinking a bat with rebar lodged in it. the rustier the better.
Wouldn't the rusted rebar get you in trouble if the intruder survives since they will probably develop some kind of sickness from it? Because I think most courts would probably agree thats just overkill
kendo sword with a glock akimbo.
intimidate then blam
I mean....eye pokes.
Just get a gun for home defense.
Sincerely, someone who doesn’t like guns.
I really don't like "just get a gun." They are a significant investment in order to get to an ethical level of proficiency, and even then they are not a good fit for every situation.
Gun and sword is the best combination, 1, your functional against assailants with guns, 2, your dipped out like an 18th century officer, 3, you have options should someone close the distance on you
@@MarcusVance Agreed. But at the end of the day they’re the best force multiplier out there. I’m a woman who’s used a wheelchair from birth. I choose not to carry a gun for religious reasons, since I don’t believe my life is more valuable than anyone else’s. But for someone else in the same position, there’s not even going to be an intimidation factor if you’re wielding anything less.
@@MarcusVancejust get a shotgun, doesn't require much aiming so long as your vaguely pointing it in your targets direction and learning how to reload should be easy (tho odds are you most likely won't have to reload after the first shot or two)
I don't know if replies to specific people work, but don't "just get a shotgun and not worry about aim."
One of the first rules if guns is to know what's behind your target. If your entire plan is to just shoot in a general direction and hope, then you should not ethically have a gun.
