Thank you for this very encouraging video. I am brand new to Substack (created my account 3 days ago) so am just figuring things out. This was very helpful. You've got a new subscriber.
Hello Mr. Hudson, I am Ahmad from Indonesia. I've been following the writing instructions from some of the videos you've made, and trying to focus on becoming a writer in the last few months. Thank you so much for the video you made about substacks, it gave me an insight into the prospects of writing on this platform. It's just that I encountered an issue with the "payment" section of my Stripe account, because my country is still not available there, so the platform "blocked" my account because the information I had to enter was not completed, so I couldn't get paid on the Substack platform yet. however, I don't give up on continuing to write on this Substack platform, I have an optimistic outlook for the future🙌
Ah, yes. Substack only pays via Stripe. 🥲 If you're ineligible to sign up for Stripe, your next best option is to make everything free and promote/sell products, services, or ask for donations. 💰
Hi Hudson! In your video on 4 Writing Trends, you mentioned the future potential of articles/stories that have audio/listening features in fhem. Could you please do a detailed video on that? Your channel is fire 🔥🔥🔥
Amazing breakdown Hudson! I follow you on Substack from Canadas by “ Harkiran’s Narrative Notes “ publication!! Love your straight ideas!💡 🎉 great job!
It's totally up to you. You can definitely create multiple newsletters. Or, simply advertise one newsletter to cover anything you're interested in. You can also use Notes for specific topics that may not fit with your newsletter(s). 💡
This is awesome, Hudson. Thanks for your insights. Do you recommend duplicating content (copying over older Medium posts) over to Substack when I create my substack account?
Awesome! You're very welcome. 🙌 And, you definitely can. I would suggest tweaking them slightly. I go into detail as to why in this video: ruclips.net/video/zvXHd3bWA64/видео.htmlsi=rkvXwEmGsq3Bunms
Hi Hudson, I was starting to write on Medium and my partnership revoked. I have posted no AI/affliate links and always had meaningful comments to other writers' work. Needless to say, I am a bit devastated since I was hoping to grow my medium stories. I am looking at substack as an avenue for my writing. I don't want to charge readers to read my work since I am just starting up. Therefore I have 2 questions. 1. How does one monetize without paid subscription. I know about affiliate marketing. Are there any unique strategies you would recommend? 2. What is your fav writing platform of all time for personal essays? I need to figure out what a note versus a post is so I need to search for a video on how substack works. But thank you for your content so far.
Hmmm, you're the second person mentioning having their partnership revoked. 🤔 I recommend reaching out to Medium for further clarification. You can submit a support request, here: help.medium.com/hc/en-us As for Substack, without paid subscribers, affiliate marketing is your next best option. Here's an article breaking down my best practices: open.substack.com/pub/makemoneywriting/p/heres-a-master-list-of-affiliate?r=1nk4jv& Personally, Medium is my favourite platform for personal essays. So, hopefully, you can figure out what's going on with your account. 🤞 I hope that helps! 🙂🙌
Thank you so much for this video, Hudson. I'm a Nigerian. I am a copywriter, hence I have written sales copy for most small Nigerian businesses. I watched your video on how to start writing on Medium, and I found out that Nigerians are restricted from joining the monetization program. I found it hard getting foreign clients, because most Job platforms I know restrict Nigerians, apart from Fiverr and Upwork and the rest of them. Does Substack accept monetization from all countries, especially Nigerians?
To my knowledge, no. I'm African too, from South Africa. They use Stripe, if not mistaken, so that would exclude us. You'd have to find other ways to monetise, such as utilising affiliate 🔗, promoting your own products/services, etc. Hope this helps.
Unfortunately, no. 🥲 Substack and Medium both use Stripe as their payment provider. So, if you're interested in writing on Medium or Substack, your best option for you would be to use them as portfolios for your copywriting work. And, to gain new clients. LinkedIn and Twitter are also great options for copywriters. 🙂🙌
Substack in theory is great, but I don't think their deliverability is that hot. For example, I subscribe (free) for a few Substacks, including yours. However, I don't get regular emails, even once a week. I get regular notifications on the app, but rarely any emails from those I subscribe to. Your thoughts? Thanks 😊
@hudsonrenniewrites I've heard that culling your email list regularly not only helps open rates but also helps keep your email address from being listed as spam...
Thank you so much for these, I have been stuck at 270 subscribers since two years:( But this sparks new life in me. Not totally related but... would love your input here... I have been doing written for 2 years now, and have been wanting to start video. A lot of big creators advise growing on one platform first buttt somehow my hearts want to do youtube too(I think, lol) What you do this? PS: I have been following your content since 3 years, still write a night jounery courtesy your first gumroad freebie. Admire your execution. I still haven't made my first downloadable freebie buttt I share this to take in some of your energy and do the doing. The essay is to say, your awesome and deeply appreciate it knowledge sharing.
Thanks! It's cool to see you here. And, awesome that you want to start RUclips. My advice would be to just start. It's scary starting something new, but that will motivate you to learn how to be successful. I think 2 platforms is the sweet spot, and depending on what your channel is about, it can be helpful to have another way to offer information to your viewers. The biggest lesson I've learned about RUclips is that you don't have to be an expert to help others. Transparency is really valuable. Funnily enough, next week's video will be about how to start a RUclips channel. And, in 2 weeks, how to create digital products. So, I hope either (or both) of them will speak to you! 🙂🙌
I've been following your videos on medium, but I'm having issues joining the partnership program, although Nigeria is now eligible. Can you help with that
@@hudsonrenniewrites they would ask me to fill in the number on my credit card, but once I'm done. It will get stuck there. No means to proceed with registration

I am considering starting on substack and have just binged your series. I don’t have a youtube channel nor am I really active on any other platform publicly except linkedin. And though linkedin would be a great platform for my type of niche (being a medical doctor, portfolio careers…) it is just wayyy to curated, redundant, and lacks that umph imo. But then again there’s a lot of traffic. I am wondering what the traffic is like on substack, without having to do things like seo preferably. Basically is it worth it for someone starting from actual 0? thanks!
That's a very wise (and accurate) portrayal of Linkedin. 😅 If you find a way to enjoy LinkedIn, it's a great place to get traffic for your newsletter. But, you can also grow from 0 subscribers on Substack. You won't reach as many people -- but, they will all be Substack users, making them easier to convert to newsletter subscribers. If you go down the route of growing on Substack, I would focus heavily on Notes. They're about the only way to get organic traffic on Substack. And, they can be really valuable, especially when you're first starting out. 🙂🙌
You seem to completely ignore all the difficulties of opening an account and everything that goes with that. As an IT ignorqmus but an experienced writer I surveyed all that and couldn't even look at all the technology and incomprehnsible instructions. All the 'how to' videos seem to assume a moderate level of experience and ability with IT systems. I'd love someonewho understands the problems to talk me through the initial steps. At present substck is a closed door to people like me, I'm afraid.
Rennie, would you cover niche post strategy, relationship building, and marketing. Do you think it's wise to comment on posts outside of our niche? Is it better to focus on building a strong presence within our niche, or should we cast a wider net to gain more followers? Cool video.TY
I think all of those topics can be successful on Substack. Personally, I would try to organize them into one niche. Because Substack doesn't have a home feed for posts, your readers will likely subscribe to your newsletter for a specific purpose. So, I think sticking to a niche is best. But, my experience is also limited, so you can always experiment if want to write about a variety of topics.🙂🙏
