3:54 The acting of how much rage was on Moriarty's face when he realizes Holmes beat him on every aspect is amazing

Bear in mind - Holmes could have walked away. He won the battle and Moriarty has not yet realised he had lost the war. But he had to rub it in.

Nope. If they didn't stop the assassination attempt, the war would definitely have begun even if moriarty was dead

He couldn't walk away. He needed to take out Moriarty right then and there to prevent him from retaliating.

To be honest, I was hoping that Moriarty would win at the end of this movie. Maybe have Holmes win a small victory against him but ultimately realize that Moriarity got what he wanted, and he played right into his hands. As a way to set up for a sequel that would see Holmes going up against him once more, this time determined to outsmart him.

Holmes showed up to provoke a response & throw both of them over the cliff... Holmes already told Moriarty that he'd accept death if he was sure that Moriarty would die as well. Holmes has a plan for surviving the fall but was unclear if it would be successful... enter the water feet first with a very relaxed body then the oxygen tank that he took from his brother to deal with the riptide effect from the waterfall upon the river holding him underwater for an extended period of time before getting far enough away from the waterfall to be able to rise up to the surface of the water.

There’s an excellent vid out on tube explaining what is happening. It’s a homage to one of the most famous chess matches in history, where Queen is sacrificed to win the whole game.

He found his weakness, winning. As soon as he has the upper hand he lets down his guard.

I've been curious about why a 3rd film hadn't been done in the next 3 to 5 years after this film. But after looking at the box office and budget numbers, it's kinda understandable why. Compared to the 1st film, this movie didn't make WB a profit due a larger budget and not so impressive domestic box office return (as overseas box office has an even lesser box office return, as it is meant to be a slight extra boost). Plus, with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law becoming bigger stars during this time period, WB definitely were afraid to do another film that would require a bigger budget.

The 2 things i find ridiculous is one, sime time has past since he stole the book and moriarity never checked his pocket and or his book once after that? And 2 when they fight and watson just comes in when they are about basiccaly fight and instead of hilmes asking for help he just yeets off the balcony with moriarity anyway.....

I think I can answer these things easily enough.
      1. The book.
There are 2 character traits about Moriarty you can never forget. He is extremely cautious, and even more arrogant. The caution means he couldn't just whip out the book at anytime. He most likely only pulls it out when he needs to make a substantial change to his info. Given he was traveling, and wasn't changing his information. He had no need. So keeping the book stored away and unseen by everyone is in his best interest.
Arrogance. At this point had severely whipped Holmes. Hook to the shoulder, blew up a bunch of his allies, etc. He undoubtedly believed he'd won. He didn't even consider loss until this exchange was halfway through. He also thought no one on earth knew about his little red book. Why check on a secret unknown to the world because you are just too damned smart for anyone to figure it out.
      2. Watson. I think this is actually simple. He was in a do or die situation. If you look at the position he was in physically when Watson showed up, he was fucked. If he let go, he had no balance or control. Moriarty could have effortlessly thrown him off and killed Watson. Even if it didn't work out that way, there was still a risk to Watson. Moriarty was famous for that hidden gun. The only reason he would go hand to hand against Holmes was they both knew Holmes would lose. Holmes refused to risk his one and only friend.

RDJs accent is worse than I remembered.
Fab film though and Harris is such a great actor, I feel they wasted Moriarty and it would have been more interesting to build him up in the first film and then have a climactic confrontation between the two in the second.
The brief appearance at the end of the first doesn't count.
