Winston S Churchill: We Shall Fight on the Beaches

  • The great PM gives one of his most famous speeches. It starts off quite calmly but the old master builds the suspence.
Once Churchill was speaking in Parliament and was slightly muddled and incoherent in his speech. A rather unattractive lady MP on the opposite benches declared to Churchill: 'Sir, you are drunk!'. To which he replied 'Madame that may be true, but in the morning I shall be sober whereas you will still be ugly'.

@@Amargosa2006 there was something called the Brisbane - Melbourne line during WW2, Essentially everything to the west and north of the line drawn between the two cities would have been allowed to fall into enemy hands with little to no resistance.
The idea was that Australia's vast distances and lack of water in the interior would have been used as a way to weaken the Japanese invaders before they reached the areas that were worth defending.
John Curtin the prime minister said no and the Australian war cabinet also said no, I'm not sure if it was Churchill's idea but there was Labor minister Eddie ward, an Australian who thought it should really be considered...
Nonetheless, even if it was Churchill who suggested it, that doesn't mean we cannot respect the Poms of WW2 and their sacrifices and hardships they endured as well as all allies, to make sure the world was a better place.
Also another thing to note is that during WW2 Australia was under its own command, they were not inclined to listen to the British just because we were apart of the commonwealth, we learned that lesson the hard way at gallipoli as I'm sure you know.

Also what the hell kinda freedom is it with so many mandatory obligations just to have the "privilege", not freedom but "privilege", to work in an economic system that is influenced by its greatest powers to harbor guaranteed success in the few at the cost of many. Where also the greatest proponents of consideration for bettering the lives those beyond the U.S. are also the most determined to cause detriment and failure of those within.
      DONT GET ME WRONG.
I am not saying that the U.S. isn't one of the G.O.A.T country's in all of known history, its just really sad that this is some of the best humanity has mustered. Governments, capitalism, socialism, these aren't bad ideas but millions of greedy apes most concerned with their immediate surroundings at any one point just suck at utilizing them. Now Democracy, in terms of freedom especially, that is innately a terrible idea... literally is the bigger group threatening to use force to the smaller group if they dont do, accept, or contribute to something they don't wanna... like I mean come on "freedom"? Could be worse, still not freedom.
So moral of the story I agree, people should be able to move to where ever they please without being stopped by some imaginary boundary and instead governed by the nonaggression principle unfortunately not a single dumbass democrat or republican in power on the planet agrees with both of these simultaneously cause the avg of humanity as it turns out is terrible.

“When Napoleon lay at Boulogne for a year with his flat-bottomed boats and his Grand Army, he was told by someone, "there are bitter weeds in England." There are certainly a great many more of them since the British Expeditionary Force returned. Sir I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone.
At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty’s Government-every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation.
The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength.
We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France,
we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
    we shall fight in the hills;
we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.”

Gregory Smith Napoléon tried to take Britain, but the previously mentioned battle of Trafalgar literally is the reason people say “Britannia rules the waves.”, I.e. The battle was so decisive it ensured British naval dominance for just under a century. The reason Hitler invaded the Soviet Union was for oil(and other strategic resources) and to destroy Bolshevism. The reason they needed oil was because without it they couldn’t run the aeroplanes necessary to gain supremacy of the English Channel.

I first came to this video a few days ago as my younger sister needs to study this speech for one of her classes and wanted my opinion of it - I just wanted to listen to the speech, but my sister drew my attention to the comments asking why so many people hate Winston Churchill so much? It made me think...
I suppose it is rather easy to sit behind your computer, with at least some level of anonymity, spouting foul and vitriolic language about a man long since dead who can't argue back. A man who must have known that he was by no means perfect, yet still opened his actions to the impartial judgement of history while making extremely difficult decisions at a point in time when the entire world was in turmoil. If nothing else, that sort of decision takes guts.
I don't wish to give the impression that I think Churchill was some kind of perfect hero striding in to 'save Blighty in our hour of need' - I agree to an extent with the many people here criticising his handling of the 1943 Bengal Famine; not to mention the firebombing of Hamburg and Dresden. However, whatever his faults, Churchill was a driving force behind keeping Great Britain in the Second World War alone from the fall of France in June 1940 until the German invasion of the USSR exactly a year later.
Call him a hero, criticise him, or actively dislike and disagree with him - I do not care. You have a right to free speech, but remember, Churchill had a large hand in shaping the world we live in today and take for granted, who here can say that they have/will ever shape the future of so many? You have to give him at least some respect for the scale of what he achieved if nothing else.
Rant over - peace out people

@@brad5426 The Japanese obviously hold some of the blame, but there was a LOT more, mainly instituted by India’s British elite. For example, the “boat denial” policies absolutely wrecked the ENTIRE fishing industry in Bengal. Along with that, the “denial of rice” policies allowed provinces to just get rid of rice that was deemed extra, and let’s just say that some hid the fact that they purposely threw away WAY more rice than was necessary. This along with war-time inflation and military buildup did NOT help.

Even before German bombers crossed the Canal, there were many British trying to flee from the war. It is a lie that every British willingly signed up to defend the country. Also, often when government leaders visited bombed cities, they were not cheered at, no, most people were hooting at the people who were dragging them into a disaster.

Are you seriously implying that Adolf Hitler wouldn't have simply built up the Kriegsmarine until it was large enough to cross the channel and launch an invasion under any "peace"?
The only reason operation sea lion never happened was that the royal navy and air force would've obliterated any landing force.. with time that would've changed.
Your view of history is that of Neville Chamberlain, treaties are worth less than the paper they are printed on.

    • @Arwiiss
      @Arwiiss 10 лет назад +6

Stryfe564 People call him warmonger but fail to remember that no response policy allowed Hitler to rebuild his army and annex quite a few countries. The whole rearmament program put a huge strain on economy and military spending was larger than in any other EU country at the time. It doesn't take genius to realize that Hitler was not going to stop because if he did, the German economy would've crashed as budget deficit was running really high.
Churchill was able to see this and understand the course of action Germany will take if no action taken to stop it and that's exactly what happened. What about peace treaty with Stalin? Did it matter when Hitler invaded Russia? What makes you think that Hitler would've honored peace treaty with Britain once Russia was conquered?
Hitler played smart, he signed treaty with Russia so Russia would stay away while he's dealing with western Europe. He miscalculated Britain's ability to defend so he wanted Britain to stay away while he's dealing with Russia. Fortunately to Britain and the world Churchill was in power and he knew what game Hitler is playing and he refused to play by Hitlers rules.
So why Churchill saw this coming while other leaders of Europe failed to see this at that time? To answer this we have to think in the context of Europe at that time. First of all the horrors of the Great war(WW I) were still quite fresh and secondly world just suffered its biggest financial crisis. Leaders simply did not wanted to get involved in another conflict and would rather try to negotiate and give a way for a promise of peace. Well we saw how that promise ended.

In 1943, up to four million Bengalis starved to death when Winston Churchill diverted food to British soldiers and countries such as Greece while a deadly famine swept through Bengal.
Talking about the Bengal famine in 1943, Churchill said: “I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion. The famine was their own fault for breeding like rabbits.”

@@Enzo_Fiquet It was because of the lack of preparation by both countries being so reluctant to engage again since the savagery of World War I. if they had conviction A couple of years earlier,, like Germany had, they probably would have realised that technology had moved on to such a degree that the Ardennes was now penetrable, by a blitz.. Then they could have prepared for that and the Nazis would have got nowhere, just like if they had simply entered Germany with both armies or even just the French army, any time between 1933-1935, just like the French had done to take reparations when they were refused in the 20's - they could have removed Hitler under threat easily.
