The context of the weather when it comes to British food is important. For example, a big roast beef joint, roast potatoes and hot veg in the midst of 30 degree summer heat is going to make you sad. However, that same exact meal on an afternoon after you've been for a cold, wet, January walk in the woods is hard to beat imo. The whole bad teeth thing is because until recently cosmetic dentistry wasn't common in British culture so even our celebrities would have stained teeth disdaining the fake bleached Hollywood smile in favour of a natural healthy oral hygiene. Considering Britain has strict laws about the sugar content of our food and all children receive free dental treatment it's unsurprising our general population has very healthy teeth.

A lot of US stereotypes about the UK come from GI's in the second world war, so are based on a small group of predominantly English people from the countryside (warm beer, bad teeth, drink tea, love cricket etc).

Regarding food if you live in a hot country you would eat fruit and salad and tomatoe sauce based dinners. We have a cold wet climate so heavy stodgy veg/ potato/pie/ stew type food is right for us, its part what grows in our climate and how to cook it to keep us warm. hot weather = light food , cold weather = hot heavy food. I don't drink tea. But I'm about to make my wife her fourth cup of the day. She probably had a few at work, too. The British food thing is a bit of a mixed bag - so many of our dishes are stews and pies and variations in between because of cold weather / winter / rain. There's a whole chunk of cooking from the victorian era that doesn't even exist anymore because people don't use the ingredients/herbs/stuff that was used in those recipes. We're in this weird limbo at the moment where we've permitted boxed food to make us lazy and it's a great shame.

I drink 3-4 cups of tea (black) per day. I like my tea strong, so I leave the bag in. Leaving your tea to brew for 3+ minutes before consuming it, allows all of the antioxidants to seep out of the leaves, so you're actually benefitting from a brew.
My teeth are all natural, nice and straight, but, they're not bleached or whitened like those people in TV smile land or those that pay 1000's and 1000's to have neon bright Turkey teeth.

Like some other people commenting I'll go to a coffee shop and feel embarrassed about asking if they serve tea when it isn't advertised on the board. I was born in the 80ies and remember being given hot tea in a beaker when I was a tiny toddler, don't know what my mum was thinking but I bet it wasn't uncommon, but I've never given it to any of my kids so maybe it won't be as popular in 20 years!

The stats will be out there but the vast, vast majority of tea drunk in the UK is blended black tea (called red teas in China) - what goes into all the common teas sold in supermarkets - PG Tips, Yorkshire and all of the rest.
It costs a lot more, but not much per cup/mug, but single variety black teas are totally different - try Assam, or Keemun for breakfast - rich and robust flavours; try 2nd flush Darjeeling in the afternoon - light and complicated with fruity flavours. Or try gunpowder? Or Nepal?
Or try green, yellow, white or oolong varietal teas for something totally different. (No milk with these and brew them very quick - 30-60 seconds, and cool - 90C, and reinffuse the leaves 3-4-5 times, which makes them very cheap per cup.)
Never wash a dog, unless it is a rescue in a hell of a state, or has bugs or a skin complaint - take them for a swim. Soap washes all the natural waxes and oils from their coat, which they really need.

Hi JT and Anna, another great video! Anna, a good rule of thumb when you go outside in Scotland is 'take a jacket anyway,' or to put it more traditionally 'ne'er cast a cloot til May is oot' - in other words don't start taking off layers until June. Of course it depends what you're doing - if you're working outside or off for a long walk you want to be prepared, but youngsters go out clubbing in midwinter with dresses not much bigger than postage stamps, often well insulated by alchohol I'm guessing😜.'There are a few Scottish accents, not just one.I was going to say they are probably thinking of the Glaswegian accent, but even Glasgow has more than one. Talking about the weather is just small talk - it generally gives us an easy subject which can either be an ice breaker or a quick friendly chat. 'Crackin' the flags' - that's a new one but I like it🤣. Now see if you can figure out 'what freezing the balls of a brass monkey' means🤣(it's not what you think..). The Brits Abroad thing is really embarrassing , and I think a lot of it is about a bad combination of strong sun and cheap alcohol. I'm not having a go at people getting drunk and enjoying their holidays it's some of the behaviour that comes with it, like they forget folk live in these places. Then just as bad you get wealthier Brits buying holidays homes and they never mix with the locals or go to their shops or anything, it's just all about the sun.

It's all about the definition of "bad" teeth. If this means requires fillings, decay etc., then no, the Brits do not have "bad" teeth. If however it refers to crooked or off white teeth, then the ascetic nature means we have a perception of having "bad" teeth as American kids wear retainers and so on as part of normal transition to adulthood. The Brits are starting to care about the look of teeth, but unfortunately they travel abroad for the look, which is now commonly referred to as having "Turkey" teeth.

Very, very, very far from that simple. If only it wasn't.
Dentists have been in dispute with the government/NHS for several (and more) years - the NHS payment rates are unrealistic, so dentists can make a lot more money treating only private patients. Most dentists do mantain an NHS patient list as well though - a sense of duty rather than economics or anything else, but those lists are tight and many, many people cannot find or get on a dentists' NHS list, and it is getting worse.
If you have not seen a dentist, anywhere, for 6-12 months, you will be dropped from any NHS patient list that you may be on and have to pay private rates for any remedial work to take you to a level of dental health and repair that the dentist regards as likely to be covered by the NHS at something like a sensible rate for subsequent work.
The one, single mess in UK NHS - when the NHS was set up, dentistry was not absorbed in the same way as was medical doctoring and the like. That makes no sense at all, but we are where we are.

@@birdmanfree1651 true enough, but all of the background politics doesn’t detract away from the treatment that 16.5 million people in England alone received in the 24 months leading up to June 2023 who used an NHS dentist (digital.nhs.uk) though it’s worth pointing out that all treatments were cancelled during 2020, and many dentists have adopted a 12 month appointment instead of 6 month to cover the backlog.
While it is getting increasingly harder in recent years to get on an NHS Dental register, the service has been offered on the NHS since it’s inception in 1948 with 25% of Dentists enrolling for the service upon its July rollout and 89% by November of the same year. The sharp increase in numbers was because of the sheer amount of patients coming through the door getting dentures fixed resulting in increased income paid to dentists from the U.K. Government. It’s only been in the last 20 years that the NHS budget has been restricted so much that dentists now tend to have 1 day a week for NHS appointments with private services for the remaining 4. However private treatment has always been made available in the U.K.

The problem with the weather in the UK, is its unpredictability. Only yesterday, the online weather forecast for my area predicted cloudy with sunny intervals, with heavy showers at 3pm. I was due to go on a shopping trip in the afternoon, that involved me walking for a long time, so I dressed for the walm sunny weather that we were due for most of the day, but wore a waterproof jacket on top, in order to cope with the later rainfall.
Guess what? It didn't bloody rain at all, so I spent the entire day, walking and sweating into my jacket, so that when I arrived home, my 'waterproof' was much wetter inside the sleeves than it could possibly have been on the outside, if it had actually rained as forecast!

Another reason (which I think imo contributed to our drinking culture today) beer/alcohol was more cleaner then the water. This started in medieval times, London didnt have a sewage system unill the 1800's.

(and I'm only allowed 1 or 2 mugs of coffee a day). and as for weather - yes. hooked on watching to see where it might be raining in case I'm going that way. however, Manchester doesn't get the amount of rain others assume it does - it's a myth. while we've had a few storms here recently, it's not as bad as it could be. I know the roads that flood easily, and a friends son usually takes a deckchair and dons the correct beachwear attire for when a local road floods - to highlight it should have better drainage than it currently has.
there are a number of UK based stormchasers - which is good when we actually do get storms and yes, I absolutely love storms but can't venture far to chase any.
and yes, we're not really built to handle too much hot weather. we just can't handle it - and neither can our transport infrastructure.
railway tracks buckle, roads melt in the heat. and everyone uses the summer of '76 to measure how hot it is and for when hosepipe bans come in. we get moorland fires and grassland fires - mostly due to idiots.

5:25 just because someone says something e.g. weather person, whether on your phone (app), or just anyone for that matter says what its going to do , doesn't mean it's going to do exactly what they have said, that's called having a prediction, doesn't mean it going exactly happen. If someone or a mobile app says it's going to rain or be sunny doesn't mean they are right. That is why I go with what the weather does itself, instead of listening to the weather on tv or a random person making a prediction like the weather man / weather women.
Bottom line, speaking for the weather in England, it's unpredictable and nothing anyone says , whatever it shows on mobile phone (app(s) or whatever the weather man or woman says doesn't mean that's what's going to happen, it's a prediction, not a fact. That's why go with what ever the weather decides to do.
