While the former is normal the latter is not observed as often. As we age, our voices tend to get deeper as vocal chords also age and become thicker/less flexible. So I don't understand how Monica s voice got higher. May be due do eventual surgeries (voice get hurt too) or just personal preference

This song really grew on me. It really showcases the distinctive vocal techniques of both ladies. While their styles are quite different, this song seamlessly weaves the two together, for a vocally rich, melodic experience. Spectacular job, ladies!
Man I don’t know what producer, writer or team for Brandy and Monica need to hear this: we deserve a joint album from them. This may not have been the best song lyrically BUT they sing circles around this song. Even if they don’t know it these two I believe, will always win together.

Fun fact: the beef started because they told Monica to tone down her voice and and not sing ‘too hard’ on The Boy is Mine. They made her sing plainly in a lower register than her own because Brandy was a bigger star at the time.
