When you have a back story just as interesting as the story in the book itself you can’t help but be interested in it. My all time favorite artist though for the ManThing was Mike Ploog. Great upload Mike!
Savage Tales #1 has been on my To Buy list for literally decades. Not only does it have Man-Thing's debut with lovely Gray Morrow art, it also features the first story of the Femizons (Thundra's race), a Barry Windsor-Smith Conan reprint and the only appearance of one of Marvel's most obscure characters, Black Brother. Excellent history of Man-Thing and the other swamp creatures, Mike. Great price for Savage Tales #1.
Great show Mike, 2 of my favourite characters you are making me decide between.....WEEEELLLLL to talk you with big names I would have to say that SwampThing tips the scales of my favourite swamp monster and that is for ONE reason - Bernie Wrightson, 'nuff said.
Well, this video spoke to me. Congrats on all the great pickups but also, welcome to the ST1 club. You know me, I’m a Ted guy all the way but we should definitely celebrate all swamp creatures.
That Savage Tales cover looked very familiar. Instantly I thought of the National Lampoon’s Vacation poster. Then I looked it up and the same artist who did the cover also created the poster.. Boris Vallejo . Very cool..
I know that you are a huge swamp monster fan but I wasn't sure if you were aware of this. The first swamp monster was a creature called the Heap that appeared in Air Fighters Comics #3 in 1942 and was part of the cast of Airboy!
Didn't realize Astonishing Tales #12 history...sure I still have that copy. Sold my Savage Tales #1 years ago. Those magazine books were hard to store..didnt have plastic bags nor boxes for them. Interesting that Skywald Comics also jumped in and released a double sized comic reprint of Heap in September 1971..
This video on Swamp Creatures was cool!! The Monster Marvels never get enough love in my opinion...!! Always loved the crossovers Werewolf and Drac (TOD 18/ WW 15 and Drac and FRankenstein FrANK 7-9. Cool memories... Also loved TALES OF THE ZOMBIE by Gerber and Pablo Marcos.... Great stuff...!
Good afternoon Mike A great show, Well I have learnt a heck of a lot today. I had never heard the Len Wein Gerry Conway connection before. It is very plausible that there would be a competion to create the best Swamp Creature, you could imagine the Beer and Pizza thinkfest! Cheers Al TheGoldkeyfourcolorkidownunda
Another aspect of the 1971 Swamp creature story was the the grandaddy of them, the Heap had a revival by the publisher Skywald in 1971, a regular color comics coming out a couple months after Swampy and Man-Thing debuted (Sept '71 cover date) but an origin story in Skywald's B&B magazine Psycho #2 cover dated March 1971. This was a new iteration of the old Hillman character from the Golden Age, but with some big differences. The color comic reprinted the story from Psycho #2 in color and added some GA reprints of old Heap stories. The art on the story in Psycho was by Marvel and DC veterans Ross Andru and Mike Esposito. They're all great books (my Savage Tales 1 is in much worse shape than yours, but I got it for only $10 about 8 years ago. I don't have the Psycho issue, but I have the Heap color issue. I had the House of Secrets issue in one of the old Silver Age classics reprint editions they put out int he 90s, but recently picked up a facsimile edition. Of them, Swamp Thing is my favorite, and I first got into the character in the 80s, when DC did the Baxter reprint series Roots of the Swamp Thing reprinting the Wein/Wrightson run, 2 issue per reprint issue. I then dipped into the main series just as Alan Moore was leaving and Rick Veitch was taking over, but went back and got all the Moore issues and the pre-Moore issues that had Phantom Stranger back-ups during the late 80s and early 90s. Great stuff. I like Man-Thing as well, but I haven't read a s much, mostly the stuff that appeared in Fear before he got his own self-titled series, and that stuff reunited Conway and Morrow on this first issue, coming out just a month or so after the Astonishing Tales issue.
Hey Mike, great video. I have been a Gray Morrow fan since I was a young boy and he is at times forgotten. Interestingly enough, I spent the last couple of months completing my Man-Thing and Ka-Zar collections, i.e. all the Silver, Bronze and Copper issues in their continuity. Loved the history lesson..well done.
Big fan of both Swamp Thing and Man-Thing. Very different characters once you get past their origins and the fact they're both swamp monsters. Love to see your passion for this corner of comic history! And great pick up!
I am always impressed with your comic book knowledge. I loved the history lesson. Years ago, I picked up a copy of Savage Tales #1 thinking it was Frazetta art only to be disappointed that it wasn't. but very happy with a 1st app of Man-Thing!
WOW! Great deal! I was ten years old when Savage Tales #1 hit the stands. I forgot all that history/ DC/Marvel connections with our Swampy heroes. Have you ever seen the 1981 Swamp thing movie? It's very cheesy but was pretty good for a g rated monster movie in 81. Loved Ted AKA the Man-Thing in the MCU Man-Thing appearance in the WWbN short film. They really made him cool in that. Ironically yes the Bermuda Triangle actually cover the southeastern part of the Florida Swamp land too. A few passenger jets crashed there like twenty years apart 1972 and in 1992 a few hundred yards apart. Ghosts have been seen and heard there on tape. Saying their trapped in limbo there. Like a Twilight Zone time warp. I was on the ship the Iwo Jima I in spring of 86. In a terrible storm felt like this huge ship was being pounded on by King Kong.
Super jelly but congrats! Now you just need an Astonishing Tales 13 to round out the early stuff. Pick up and read Fear 10-20. It's such a great story.
Thank you for enlightening us with your knowledge of the history and crossover of man thing. I am currently collecting the astonishing tales run. I have the first one through 20 which is all featuring Kezar. I will probably complete the rest of the run at some point. I would definitely love to have that number one issue of savage tales for the first true appearance of man thing. I feel you definitely got an awesome deal on those books Keep up the great work!!! 😎
Maaaan, that's an incredible deal!! I love Man-thing, and that ST #1 is now at the top of my 'Gotta have it' list. It's also worth mentioning that Monsters Unleashed #3 (also a magazine format) has the complete reprinting of Man-thing's first appearance in ST #1. Monster's Unleashed is also usually quite a bit cheaper than Savage Tales, in case anyone wants to read it. Great video, Mike!
I love the swamp creatures. I have all the wein and wrightson swamp thing issues. I see a house of secrets 92 in your future. You have all the other books other than that one it looks like.
I collect Swamp Thing 1 and Fear 10 ALL DAY LONG. Have several copies of this Brunner gem. Wrightson did a nice Hulk cover with swamp thing too. Do not have a savage tales though.
